Theisman can never shut the fuck up. The man loves to hear himself talk. Gus Johnson screams about everything. Can't tell the difference between a 2-yard plunge and a 60-yd. bomb. He's a blathering idiot, but as has been proved, as long as you scream, you'll get hired. The Tirico/Gruden/Jaworski combo is growing on me. They are certainly an improvement on what was there. I'm just happy ESPN/ABC/Disney stopped cross-promoting (for the most part). Nothing pissed me off more than when they'd bring in some douchebag who knows nothing of the sport during the 3rd quarter. There was always shit happening and they'd be having some circle-jerk about the new Tuesday night show on ABC. Gay. Phil Simms is a breath of fresh air. The man is usually not afraid to say things before the fact not after. And, if he messes something up, he usually mans up. Dierdorf is a classic Monday Morning QB. And an asshole, to boot. Darryl Johnston on FOX isn't a bad announcer. I actually like the Marv Albert/Boomer combo on Westwood One. Very meat-and-potatoes, which if you ask me, is the way it ougtha be. To age myself a tad, I always liked the Merlin Olsen/Enberg combo on NBC and always fucking despised Paul MacGuire. His hatred of the Jets was palpable. Even as a 10-year-old I could tell he hated the Jets. The Summerall/Madden combo on CBS was always rock solid.
I can't even take Joe Theisman seriously anymore. I give preseason announcers a break because the broadcast you here during a game is usually the broadcast that local radio stations broadcast. You have to expect there to be some degree of homerism with this. However, JT ALWAYS acts like this! On the NFL Network he talks about how the Redskins will win the NFC East and are Super Bowl contenders. How can you take the man's opinion seriously when he thinks along those lines? I remember last season he predicted the Redskins would beat the Giants in the week 15 matchup. The Giants DOMINATED that game and the Redskins gave up early in the second half. It was the only game that year where the Giants actually had a good defensive performance. Theisman is a nothing more than a very ugly cheerleader.
I had to watch the Redskins @ Jets Pre-wk3 on Washington Broadcast torrent with Joe Thiesmann in the booth. It reminded me of MNF with Thiesmann, and how even his former coach would abuse him on TV. God I couldn't endure it.
Worst pairing I ever heard covering a Jets game was Dan Dierdorf and Dick Enberg. God that was awful.
Dan Dierdoof is the reason why I stopped watching Monday night football and I still don't watch it out of fear that he might make a guest appearance.
this guy is a real player. is there anything this guy cant do? woahh look at that kid outa usc. that guy is the real deal. you see what this kid can do? i dont know if you can find a better left tackle than this man right here. everybody on fox sucks, and the espn guys love to suck cock. I like the guys on NBC Sunday night that call the game. CBS is okay. Nothing really to like or hate about them. Buttle likes to kiss a little too much ass, but not really on a Gruden level.
As many people have pointed out, Joe Theismann literally does nothing right in the booth. The fact that his name is actually pronounced "Thees-man" but he changed it in college so it would rhyme with "Heisman" basically tells you all that you need to know about that guy. Joe Buck combines the sanctimony of a nun with the enthusiasm of a corpse. Shannon Sharpe was pretty much hired because Deion Sanders left CBS, and they felt that they needed to hire a sassy black guy who makes controversial statements to replace him. He adds no serious analysis, he just tries to piss people off (see: "I would rather die in an abandoned building alone, and my family not know what happened, than play for Tom Coughlin.")
you are SPOT ON with these guys, especially regarding MacGuire. it was so obvious how he hated NYJ. i hate dierdorf too, its like listening to a drunk. summerall was memorable, whether you liked the NYG or not. im old enough to remember SBIII and have a copy that i surf thru. the voice of curt gowdy is a great part of my childhood.
God, I can't believe my brain is holding knowledge this useless....lol....I believe they paired OJ with MacGuire (2 Bills) for a minute, and occasionally had Ahmad Rashad as a sideline/3rd guy in the booth. I literally used to put feet and fists into the dry wall in my bedroom as a kid back then. I'm only 33, so I only caught Gowdy doing baseball and, obviously, a little long in the tooth, but he had a voice made for the airwaves. I always loved, LOVED, Marty Glickman and, yes, Dave Jennings back in the late 80s/early 90s. Say what you will about Jennings, the man knew the rule book in and out. And, Marty Glickman was Marty Glickman. His call of Raul Allegre kicking the Jets into the playoffs against Miami is a great memory for me. Beating KC in the '86 WC game, too.
They'd been around for the last couple of years. I always liked the way they called the game. Marv is a great play-by-play guy. Harlan isn't a bad announcer, but following in a guy like Albert's shoes will be tough.
Enberg was great in the 1980s, but has been horrible in recent years. He consistently misidentifies players.
