 I don't get everyone killing Faneca. Our line sucked, we got him and we had a top O-line for the two years he was here, now he's gone and we have a hole again. He couldn't have sucked too bad.
Its because he was never a good pass block and some expected him to be on. Also, while still a beast in the run game he had become a major liability in our pass game. At 8+ mill a season he was being far out paid for his production. His getting cut was as much to get young guys in the line as it was to spread money to our players who need resigned. For that reason alone i was happy for it. Brick and now Mangold are locked up long term and thats huge for us. As for Slauson, he has not been great, but not awful. If he continues to progrees we'll be just fine. I feel our line is not worse at LG right now, but the regular season will tell the truth. IMO the biggest hole is Woody. He has looked slow as hell off the snap in the preseason. Sure, its just preseason, but if he does not pick it up its going to be a huge isue this season.
Give Slauson a chance. He was beat badly on that 1 play. Hopefully (Im sure Callahan and Rex killed the guy for it) he learned his lesson on that play and it won't happen again. He is a young player who has not seen everything yet. It's a learning process.
I don't disagree with any of that and I understand why the Jets made the move. What I don't understand is why everyone here is saying Faneca sucks now that he's gone. The guy was a Pro Bowler however many times and the first guy we got the first day of free agency after an awful year because of a bad O-line. Maybe he wouldn't have taken less money to stay, I don't know. Yes, he's two years older now but a lot of a successful O-line is continuity and the guys all working off of one another with familiarity. So I get all that why it happened and I'm thrilled we locked up Brick and Nick, they were the first two pieces of the true rebuilding in 2006. But people pretending we're better off right now in strictly a football sense without Faneca to me are mistaken. Hopefully someone steps up and we move on according to the plan. I'd love to be wrong, it's happened before and this would be a great time for it again.
D'Brick got Pennington KILLED in his rookie season... I am just hoping the same shit doesn't happen here. I mean seriously, Yes Faneca was bad in pass blocking and I was absolutely critical of Faneca since day 1 but if the main reason in getting rid of him was $$$ in an uncapped and that shit comes back to bite us in the ass ala Kendall... It'll be tough to get over.
were not the only teams that cuts vets that make more than what there worth. this is how the nfl works and it was the right decision.
1 play a game equates to one play too many a game. If Slauson allows 1 sack a game, expect our third string QB to be starting by wk 12. I know this would be his first season as a starter, but he needs to keep his sacks allowed avg to less than 0.5 a game. He should get better next year, but then again, Ducasse should aswell.
On that point, for game 1 of the season, I'd have to agree. Long term, if slauson works out, we are much petter off though. When it comes to the O-line I think we have very good evaluators and teachers in place. I have faith for now.
