Update from 1050 who has a reporter on site. Chad is throwing and taking part in all drills.

Just a lil update for those who care, slow round here anyways.

Good news, and honestly i think it's expected. People have been going way overboard with the "he's done" comments.

I can't wait until I start seeing the "Chad back to form" threads midway through training camp...

but, really, how much faith should we have?

his arm was weak to begin with. unless this is some sort of blessing in disguise, i can't see how he'll be able to throw effectively.

however, is it possible that he can recover to the point where his arm will be stronger than it was before the shoulder injuries?

    cheers

I don't think his arm can be stronger than before the injuries, but I think it was adequate enough to begin with. IMO, a guy who can throw a 50 yard bomb to Santana Moss in the playoffs WITH A TORN ROTATOR CUFF will be fine once it's actually healed.

You can come back stronger after it is healed for 8 months or so.

Dr. Andrews is the best orthopedic surgeon in sports and some baseball players who got tommy johns surgery from him have thrown harder then they did before, after they fully healed.

Ken Berger of Newsday is blogging on what he saw in today's morning practice. Looks like he'll update the info after the afternoon practice.

    Chad Returns
    By Ken Berger
I'm back. So is the blog. More importantly, so is Chad Pennington.
It's only June 15, but today is a significant step in Pennington's return from right shoulder surgery in October. For the first time since training camp last August, Pennington is expected to practice twice in the same day.
I just got finished watching the first practice, and Pennington looked smooth and in command -- but as expected, most of what the offense is working on at this point is the short passing game. Pennington's longest completion by far was a 35-yarder on a post route to Laveranues Coles -- on a blown coverage by Derrick Strait. Everything else was 15 yards or less.
The biggest surprise was that it wasn't Pennington or Patrick Ramsey who strode to the line of scrimmage first with the starting offensive line. That honor went to rookie Kellen Clemens.
To the media members in attendance, it certainly seemed significant that Clemens was getting the starter's reps in the rotation with Pennington, Ramsey, and Brooks Bollinger. Pennington scoffed at the notion, bristling at one point to a TV reporter who brought it up. Pennington explained that the rotation changes every day, and today it was Clemens' turn to get most of the reps behind the starting line in team drills.
Clemens looked poised and in command, but he looked a lot better in individual drills and 7-on-7 than he did in full-squad drills. After consecutive passes that were intercepted by Eric Barton and batted down at the line by Bryan Thomas, one of the Jets' starting defensive players barked at Clemens, "I told you, rook, it's gonna be ugly for you."
While I didn't come away with a strong opinion one way or another about Pennington's progress, I can say this without equivocation: this is a truly open competition for the starting job, and Pennington looks to me to be in for the fight of his career.
I'll be back later to discuss the afternoon practice. Feel free to weigh in.

    Pennington throws at minicamp

    By: Dan Leberfeld

    Date: Jun 15, 2006

On Thursday, quarterback Chad Pennington, coming off his second major shoulder surgery, threw for the first time in front of the media. He threw at the morning practice in the team’s mandatory mini-camp.

Most of his passes were dump-off throws to the running camps, but he did complete a 35-yard pass to wideout Lavaranues Coles.
Pennington said his lack of deep balls is nothing to be concerned about.

“I know you guys want to see the long ball, but I’m going to work within the offense,” said Pennington.

Pennington action was limited, with signal-callers Kellen Clemens, Brooks Bollinger and Patrick Ramsey seeing more action. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“I’m on a pitch count, so I won’t go above and beyond what I’m supposed to do,’ said Pennington.

And it’s interesting to note that the rookie Clemens got the most reps with the first team.

“I knew you guys would say that,” said Pennington. “It will create a story. We are in a rotation.”

But no matter how the quarterbacks are listed on the depth chart, Pennington isn’t concerned about that right now.

“My focus is so much on getting healthy, I can’t worry about that,” said Pennington. “The coaches have made it clear it’s an open competition.”

  18. Thanks for that piece Mickey. I'd like to hear more about how the individual players are looking as opposed to just the QB's.Hopefully Ken does more of this in the afternoon.
