I used to really like Coles but then on Hard Knocks when Rex said "Goddamn....he's pretty fucking good" (about Revis), everybody in the room laughed but him...what a dick. Now I'm worried he's gonna catch too much.

    Coles is a dick

This makes sense to me. Coles has done some punt returning in the past, I think.

I don't see how Coles can help motivate the team though. I mean, this is the Patriots. We are both 9-2. Shouldn't take too much to get the team pumped and ready to play. If they really needed Coles to help motivate the team, then they have already lost this game. He must be dressing and will be used as insurance.

I don't think any punt returns, just kick offs.

Having Cotch come back this quick might be hoping for too much. A groin tear is a tough injury and it's real easy to re-tear it. I guess signing Coles make some sense.

The best news (assuming he dresses) is with Clowney gone, he can again wear #87 instead of I believe #19 that he had in preseason.

I was always a big Coles fan, but this doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me at this point.

I'm going with the "retire as a Jet" purpose.

I think it makes sense in these terms. It is a short term (1 game signing?)

Leonhard's injury happened on Friday - who are you going to sign that can have any immediate impact or even play at any position, with no practice with the team - almost noone.

You could bring up someone from the PS but they are there for a reason.

There is a goood chance that LC may see no snaps but he provides insurance for Cotch - especially if he is returning punts.

He does know the system and playbook in case we need to air it out and use 4-5 wide and as already mentioned he will definitely help with the intensity and motivation.

ideally, he suites up, the pats see that hes old and dont blow their best coverage on him. later in the game, he catches a touchdown pass, and announces his retirement after the jets are 10-2, or we let him ride the wave til he gets a ring too.

any word on who fills in for leonhard? my only concern. this signing is also symbolic. rex just said we dont need anyone new.

When you put it that way, it makes sense.
