I thought the Panthers got real lucky when this guy fell in their laps in the 2nd round of the 2010 Draft. I've heard over & over that he doesnt have the best attitude, but are we talking Jeff George here? Is it he that bad of a teammate? His measureables are good - arm strength, size, experience in a pro-style offense under Charlie Weis at ND. Its extremely hard to succeed as a rookie QB in the NFL......not to mention even harder to succeed as a rookie QB in the NFL playing on the dysfunctional Panthers. Sam Bradford is one of those that come around as often as Haley's comet. I'm definitely missing the boat here. Thoughts?
I actually felt this way too. Clausen didn't get much of a chance to prove himself before his team gave up on him. It made no sense to me for Carolina to "waste" a 2nd round pick on a QB, give him only a handful of games, and then go out the next year and use your 1st round pick on another QB. You’re right, it takes a long time for a QB to become successful in the NFL and Clausen didn’t have any time to develop. If I recall, he wasn’t even the starter for the whole season, I think Matt Moore was the starter at the beginning of the season (I could be mistaken). But to give a kid a couple of starts and then throw in the towel doesn’t seem like he got a fair shake. Maybe Carolina is already done with the Clausen experiment. I figure they think that a guy like Cam Newton doesn’t come around very often and so they had to take him. As much as I’m not sold on Newton, I’m pretty sure he will be more successful than Clausen. So I guess there was no way for Carolina to know that they would end up with the 1st pick this past year and would end up with their franchise QB, however last year they could have guessed that they’d have a bad year and with such a QB-deep draft they would guess with certainty that they could hold out another year and get a better QB than Clausen. I suspect Clausen will end up with a Kellen Clemens-like career. He will probably sit on the depth chart and hope for a chance to start, maybe get a chance to start a few more games in his career, but will probably fail to impress.
I think the main problem about Jimmy Clausen is that he looks like an emu. Everything after that is like a cascade of dominoes chiseled from a boulder comprised of a hardened resin of failure extract. You can't win when you look like an emu.
Don't think he's gotten a fair shake at Carolina, but I never really thought much of him anyway. Seems like an arrogant little shit. "I played in a pro-style offense" only gets you so far once you're actually a pro. Reminds me of Rex when he first got here and his party-line Kellen Clemens praise was "he knows the system."
Claussen will be a good NFL QB in the right situation. He had a terrible team around him last year and he was a rookie. Expectations shouldn't have been high. I think the Panthers made a mistake not giving him a chance to really run the team. I think he could become a top trade bait player after next season for a team that's looking for a young QB.
Trade bait is probably what Carolina is thinking since they have pissed away so many draft picks the past few years. Vikings & Cardinals would be good landing spots. The guy could end up similar to Matt Schaub / Kevin Kolb - sitting the bench a couple yrs & then someone taking a flier on him. Bottomline is that the guy has the tools to at least be a competent QB.
Yeah but who's going to want Clausen in a couple years? I can't imagine him being a highly valuable trade asset.
I think this is really what they should have done. Draft a can't miss player like AJ Green. A lot of people arent sold on Cam Newton either. This could turn out to be a disaster for the organization if Newton doesnt work out 2/3 yrs from now. This "hunt" for a franchise QB can go on for years --- better off drafting the AJ Greens and Marcel Dareus' of the world and building up the team around the QB position.
Blunt and absolutely true. In fact, if they wanted to draft AJ Green they could have probably worked a fucking sweet trade deal with Atlanta.
Hypothetical question here: Lets say Cam Newton gets his chance to play next year and absolutely blows. Normally, you wouldn't give up on him because he is a rookie and he is playing on a team that is awful. But what if they finish with the worst record? Do they even think about drafting Luck or do they trade the pick?
1) Panthers are run by a bunch of retards... not only is their owner a cheap ass but their GM is the moron that every year trades future picks (NE 1st pick in rd 2 for example). 2) Their team sucks donkey balls (in a tough div) and they had major injuries last year. If Clausen had lasted 1 more pick I think the 49ers would've selected him and he'd be in a much better situation right now. But unfortunately for him his current situation will set back his career at least 2/3 years. What he needs is to go to a team that hav a vet starting and sit a year in the right envoirment. I really wonder who will start for the Panthers this year... Anyways I'm pretty sure they'll select in the top 5 next year.
