Did you catch Thurman with Cro on the sidelines, telling him to catch the ball with his thmubs together, instead of letting the ball get into him?

That's designed for situations in which clear possession is demonstrated, aka a defender coming in after the catch and securing the ball. That wasn't the case here. Austin had his hands on the ball even as Cro was attempting to secure it. There was no possession prior to that point.

That's my biggest gripe... like the Sanchez fumble against Pitt last year in the title game, how many times have we seen that called as an incomplete pass or the "tuck rule" . His arm was moving forward and the ball was knocked out by the defenders helmet. Should not have been a fumble but they ruled it that way.

We can't go back and change these things but the "tuck rule" doesn't exist and it should have been a fumble and the Green Bay picks should not have been awarded last year.

Just imagine how the course of history changed w/o the tuck rule? They don't win the SB and they miss the playoffs the following year. Does Bellicheat still have a job after that?

I was OK with the call and I'm still OK with it. Cro never established possession even though he had his hands on the ball first. When they came to the ground, there was simultaneous possession. Tie goes to the offensive player. Case closed.

Of course, nobody mentions this play when they're slamming the Jets for being so lucky. Whatever, we're 1-0. Deal with it.

In that picture it seems like they both have it. Austin is in a better position to rip the ball out so thats why he got it. He had his hands underneath, therefore he is in a better position to rip it out. Not to mention he's a little stronger than Cro

Didn't similar shit happen twice last season on the Halloween game against the Packers? An they gave the ball to the D both times.

I aknowledge it would have been a better approach were Cro to have played the ball in a way that Austin would have had no play at all on it, and THAT would have helped.

But if you look at that still photo, Cro had both hands on the ball, and Austin had his hands over Cro's or otherwise not in control of the ball. Austin later got better control of it.

Real time and with angles, probably the refs didn't see it, but according to htat pic Cro had possession.

Well, yes that's the nature of sports though. There will always be borderline plays and some of them will change the course of a franchise. Every team experiences these. People who have been Patriots fans for a long time still have problems with the 1976 playoff game vs the Raiders.

It is really simple. Every football game has significant missed calls.

There are also claims out there that the tuck rule call was wrong in another way; that Woodson's hit that caused the fumble included a blow to the head and it should have been a personal foul call. There is video to support this - and that would have been just as much a franchise history changer if this was missed and the play was called a simple fumble.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG7krO7GGfs, replay at 6:15

Who is to say what other calls were missed in this game? Or every close game?

It's just the nature of this game.

Yes, I agree....It seems as though enough teams do not make thumbs together a coaching point.

Watching guys basket catch when it isn't necessary gives me fits as much as MLB players that cant lay down a bunt.

Yeah, we did get completely screwed last year. Makes plays like that all the more infuriating. But that was the right call.

you are correct. Cotchery caught it, got it wrestled away, defense got the ball.

And Woodson takes it away from Keller

Cro disappointed on this play, this is his strength playing balls like this in the air, one of our most athletic players should be able to play it at a much higher point. This shunt have even went to Austin in a tie it should have been a relatively easy int for him.

I didn't even consider for a moment that it was a bad call, it was definitely a touchdown for Austin.

Initially I thought it would definitely be an interception though with the position Cromartie had on him.

They don't use the word possession, they use the word control. It looked like Cro had control of the ball from that one picture. Seeing it live, it looked like a td, and I don't think they should overturn a call like that, but the wording of the rule is ambiguous.

Regardless, the refs simply call it based on who has the ball at the end.

except you have to use this rule in conjunction with the rule that constitutes a catch since this rule doesn't define a catch by itself, and you can't have a catch without possession. Possession is the first requirement of any catch, and Cromartie didn't have possession first, they both had possession of the ball simultaneously, thus the offense gets it.

so, once possession is established with the catch rule, you then go to this rule for a simultaneous catch.

I don't think this would have been called otherwise even if the officials had all day to call the play. Cro was NEVER down when he caught the pass, and while Cro had the initial possession, Miles stuck his hand in there around the ball too. Cro rolled over, but his knees never touched the ground. In the mean time, Miles got a good grab on the ball and by the time Cro would have been called downed, it had become simultaneous possession. Simultaneous possession goes the offense.

    ...

    Possession, according to the NFL:
"When a player controls the ball throughout the act of clearly touching both feet, or any other part of his body other than his hand(s), to the ground inbounds."

In other words, possession and control are not synonyms.

Obtaining control of the ball is the first step to establishing possession. If both players gain control at the same time, and maintain control throughout, then it is simultaneous possession.

    A successful catch:
Obtaining control -> maintaining control -> officially possessing.

IF they were using the simultaneous possession rule, then both players had to obtain control at the same time. It looks like Cro obtained control first.

It seems like we've been on the wrong end of the rule.
