TQR - Total Quarterback Rating I took the time to read this when it came out back in early August.I wasn't sure how fast it would catch on with networks outside ESPN but I decided to follow up again. After reading the post I thought I would post the article again for those interested. I'll post my thoughts below. Linky: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6833215/explaining-statistics-total-quarterback-rating Part 1
Although the concepts that ESPN is attacking and attempting to include in the formula is accurate, I think the execution is lacking. Based on this weekends' games, I question how Fitzpatrick lead the league. Although he did play well, it was a blowout. There was very little pressure on the QB so I would think based on the weighting system ESPN is using There is less points to acquire. More astonishing is how Romo is rated higher than Sanchez. Considering Romo fumbled and INT'd in the waning minutes of the game, when it was on the line, there should be more negatives applied to Romo's score instead of Marks. Obviously the easy answer is to just call ESPN a sham and let it go but the system will most likely be adopted eventually by all the networks and the NFL. However, since Google is my friend,I searched and found the following resource which basically explain that TQR is flawed just like the existing QBR system. Let me know what you think. http://www.itsalloverfatman.com/broncos/entry/does-espns-total-quarterback-rating-correlate-to-winning
It's obvious. We need to trade Sanchez and a 2nd for McNabb. That's the only way the NYJ are going to win a Superbowl this year.
Contribute something to the thread or you won't be around here to watch the Jets beat the snot out of your team. Consider this your warning.
OMG, that's amazing ... and really indefensible. I'd LOVE to hear Jaws, Dilfer or anyone else who designed this horseshit rating system try to make an argument for how this makes any sense whatsoever. You really couldn't do it without sounding like a complete imbecile.
517 Yards, 4 TD 1 INT 121.6 QB Rating 88.6 QBR rating. I assure you folks, ESPN is not making this rating system up to make the Jets or Sanchez look bad. Every QB in the NFL is rated on it and there are many surprising low scores. It does not appear that yards thrown have anything to do with it. I assumed that posting these stats WAS contributing something to this forum and didn't think that I would be "Warned" by a butthurt forum mod. In another thread, I posted that Sanchez looked good after his dismal start to the game, and that he played pretty well. The man came thru when he needed to despite Tony Romos mistakes and overall bad coaching by the Cowboys. Don't go threatening me with a warning that I will be banned from these forums by posting useful QB statistics in a thread discussing QB ratings man. That is strike 2 against your man card.....You do not even want me to tell everyone what Strike 1 was for (btw - I think those miller lite commercials were hilarious) haha
I agree with this but useful stats do exist in football, they just can't be viewed in a vacuum like you can with baseball. The two most important things in baseball (statistically and realistically) are hitting and pitching and they're both done standing still. The eyes can be pretty deceiving due to this, and often are.
Football Outsiders' Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement (DYAR) system ranks Sanchez' performance as the 17th best for the week. Here is their commentary: So, certainly a different result than ESPN arrived at.
