Kyle Wilson's play in the Jets' defensive backfield grows by leaps and bounds this season. Jets cornerback Kyle Wilson continues to earn praise from teammates and coaches for the turnaround he is enjoying in his second season. "There's a reason we took him in the first round," Rex Ryan said of the 2010 draft pick out of Boise State who was selected at No. 29. "He's starting to play to it." Wilson has found a comfort level in the secondary he failed to locate last season, following instructions of the safeties and matching his counterparts against the Cowboys and Jaguars during the first two weeks. He has four tackles. "He hasn't really been talked about either way," defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said. "It's one of those things after the game, did he do much? A lot of times at that position, the answer is yes, obviously he played well because you didn't notice him." Darrelle Revis, who welcomed Wilson as a workout partner in Arizona during the lockout, assisted in settling him and asserting his influence as a veteran. "His head was spinning last year, and you could tell," Revis said. "Now he's just being very confident. Watch the film, it's there." Ryan noted that Wilson recently had three interceptions in back-to back practices, allowing that he dropped half of them. It was progress just to see him be as productive. "We never saw that last year," Ryan said. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...-24_wilson_covering_ground.html#ixzz1YvAFfKIU
He has looked the part this year and it is great to see. The only part of the article that makes no sense, he had three INTs in practice, and dropped half of them, 1.5?
Vince, I want to make sure you take a look at the "Wilson, what a difference a year makes" thread. Lots of people eating crow about your brother in there. Kyle really wasnt bad last year. He was just a second late getting his head around. This year, not only is his head around, he is plastered to receivers. Hell if I asked a casual fan if they realized Wilson was even playing, I bet they wouldnt know. Wilson has been a blanket so far this year, and has allowed nothing behind him. Heck I don't even think he's given up more than a 5 yard completion yet this year. Congrats to K-Dub for his improvement thus far. Here's to hoping he can fufill his potential, because lord knows it would be awesome to have three ball hawking, shut down corners out there in our secondary.
every sane fan could see he was close last year, just slightly behind. Lots of us knew he was going to be much improved this year now that he is up to the speed of the NFL. But I don't think even his biggest supporters, myself included, thought he was going to come out of the gates playing this well. Every jets fan is rooting for Kyle, and we can't wait to see him continue to get better and better.
I've always been a huge Wilson supporter. He has all the physical talents and never had a problem keeping up with his man he just had some trouble finding the ball. Right now his role is perfect and hes comfortable there and doing well. Last year with the Revis injury hurt him because he was thrown into the fire early and was moved all over.
Gotta love how well Kyle is doing. His coverage has been rock solid, and his tackling is a thing to behold. One play that comes to mind is in the preseason, against that other NY team, where he stopped Victor Cruz on the 1 or 2 yard line on what looked to be a sure touchdown. A DB who can tackle and cover well... sounds like a perfect recipe for the Rex Ryan Seal of Approval.
You could tell this would happen when he really improved toward the end of last year. That was the signal that, at the very least, he definitely wouldn't bust. Now he's just playing awesome. A huge mismatch in the Jets' favor when any team's #3 goes up against this guy. Also, he did a great job filling in for Revis and Cromartie when each cramped up against the Cowboys.
Funny thing is this year is nothing. No OTAs, training camps or any of that crap this off-season so hes still way behind where he should be The combination of a year of experience (vs last year where he barely played) plus having actual OTAs/camps and having our rooks on the dline improve significantly due to the same reasons (thus more QB pressure), and you should expect Wilson to be SIGNIFICANTLY better next year than this. Now THATS something to be excited about.
He can still be the best corner to come out of the 2010 NFL draft. He just had a long learning curve, tis all.
Our big three at corner are all under the age of 28. Woodson is more than likely a few years away from retirement (or at least a move to safety) and this is probably Asante Samuel's last year in Philadelphia. Keep our guys under contract and we should have the best cornerback core in football for a long time.
