OKay it's been nice listening to Mangini's "Open Competition" monologue but it's time to end the suspense. Chad Pennington is far and above the best choice as the starter. I'm far from being a expert but I've attended 3 practices and Chad has been the best QB . Ramsey to be fair is the 4th best QB at camp. His inabilty to accurately throw passes will cost a team.Bollinger (suprisingly to me :breakdance: ) really looks good throwing . Clemmens phscally is a monster he will be tough to bring down. Mentally he's not there. This leaves us Chad. A 2x shoulder surgery recoveree. He might not throw 70 yds down field but he has the heart of a winner. Mangini needs to get behind him and make him the choice as the #1 QB and move on. Comments?

I agree. We have no choice. Given Ramsey's performance, Chad is the winner by default. Mangini will look at who gives us the best chance of winning. With Chad's NFL experience (playoff games, even), his composure, he's been under fire, his intelligence, his leadership ability, his knowledge of the system and playbook, his ability to absorb things easily and his natural leadership qualities, he clearly gives us the best chance. Let's put it this way... Mangini would look like a complete fool if he started anyone else.

I think the Star-Ledger nailed it the other day about Chad having already made it, it's just that Mangini didn't want it out yet.

Now, where does that leave us? Not so good, I think. First of all, you'd have to be from Mars to not be aware of the fact that Chad has no deep ball. He never did, but now it's even more questionable. If he does throw deep, it has to have more air under it and more hang-time than most punts. Without the ability to keep DEFs honest, I think our OFF struggles. And without a legitimate pass rush, I think our DEF struggles.

So, if our OFF struggles and our DEF struggles, we'll be extremely lucky to see the kinder side of 8-8. We all need to think '07 and beyond.

I disagree. I dont think it matters that no one has been named starter yet.
Let them all play and believe they have a chance instead of knowing and maybe slacking off.
I will by happy as long as the starter is named by the 3rd pre-season game.

Exactly. Let them play, and in the preseason they will be under a little mor pressure fighting for the starting position, and see who is the best then.

There is no need to name a starter yet. We’re not even a week into TC. How about being patient and seeing each guy in a game situation. Besides I am sure the down time is not hurting CP; it might actually be helping him to be able to take a couple of reps and then be able to rest his arm. I think we all know that CP is his own worst enemy.

I would say relax..... Mangini runs twice the 11 on 11's Herm ran. That means there are plenty more reps to be shared. There is no rush until the preseason games start, when real time reps are at a premium.

It is all being done to save Pennington's arm. Just like last year, he is still on a "pitch" count and he doesn't want to overwork himself. Too many positives from Pennington, he better stay healthy all year or he will really devastate me.

While it's nice to name a starter quickly and provide him with the majority of reps, there are still some advantages of allowing the competition to continue. Most of it has already been said, so I'll just recap:

    (1) Prevents Penny from wearing down.
    (2) Heated competition can only make them improve.
    (3) Allow backups to get enough reps, so if (when) Chad goes down, they're not completely unprepared.
    (4) Everyone still has a chance to push Chad for the starter position.

ok ok weve had this discussions like 20 times already.....can someone tell me how it benefits chad pennington to be officially named the starter right now? I can see it hurting the other 3 who may still be competing the job but can find no tangible positive in telling chad hes the man.

    Gentlemen,

Hold your horses! There is no need to name a starter before the preseason. Run a college style two qback system in the first two games of the preseason. Whoever performs the best get the starting job.

Ramsey has an arm, but he lacks Pennington's ability to read the defense.

I’m all for Chad starting this year. If he can make it a banner year and get to week 8 or 9 before going down with an injury, it gives Clemmens both valuable seat time and snaps at the end of the season.

I don't know, that would make it seem too much like a rebuilding year, which it kinda is, but you can't play like it is, you have to play to win.

This about sums it up. No need to name the starter, but we all know who it will be, now don't we?
