I was in attendance for the Jets practice today at 2:30. Practice was in helmets only. Here are some things I noticed feel free to add or comment. Ramsey seems to be on a island. He really didn't do anything and he saw no snaps in the team sessions. The only time I even saw him with the QB's was during position workouts. During one Chad, Kellen and Brooks were all throwing different patterns at the same time but Ramsey was alone further down the field just throwing by himself. I don't know what this means but he didn't seem like part of the team today. Chad only got in on one or two plays during the team session. With the QB's as a whole I think Chad's arm looks about the same as it always have. That being said I believe Kellen seems to throw the ball with the most zip and the most ease. The Jets offense as a whole I thought looked pretty bad. It should be noted though that in the team sessions only Kellen and Brooks really worked with the team. Vilma had a pick in a team drill off a deflection. (I believe Brooks threw the ball) The situation drill today was 44 seconds, down 2, ball on the 35, with two timeouts. The defense won both times. The first team which featured Brooks at QB moved the ball on first down but on second down the snap sailed over Brook's head. That made it 3rd and 21 with one timeout, basically ending the drive. Kellen and the second team got the ball to the 42 going in but then stalled out. Kellen threw a hail Mary, which traveled about 55 yards in the air, and was dropped in my opinion by Brad Smith. To end practice Mangini let Nugent try the field goal from the 42 (the spot the second team offense stalled at) but it was just short. Probably would have been good from 57. Graham had some boomers. I had his best punt at about 57 yards and 5+ seconds of hang time. Ben also appears to be working on the short kicks and coffin kicks. One impressive short kick hit at the one and bounced strait up and died at about the 2. Nugent's only missed field goal was the previously, mentioned 60 yarder. However the only other kicks I saw him take where from 45 and in. Jerricho Cotchery dropped at least 3 balls and didn't have a very good practice IMO. Tim Dwight dropped a punt and had to run a lap. The defense looks like the best unit by far and seems to give a lot of different looks. The only problem with the D seems to be the secondary's ability to commit penalties. I would say they had 3-5 flags on them for holding or pass interference. Overall, I thought the Jets didn't look to good. Hopefully, it was just them adapting to the field. Also don't forget the offense really used their back end QB's all day. The team did have a few nice plays, the Vilma pick and a TD catch by I believe Baker to name a few. Another brought spot was Leon Washington and Cedric. Both looked pretty good. I think Leon could be a play maker on some screens. I would like to end by saying that the Jets did a very classy thing at the end of practice. Practice runs in sessions, a session can last from 5 to about 10 mins in length and a full practice is about 15 sessions. For the last session of practice today the Jets brought out tables with cards and markers. The players then proceeded to come over and sign the cards and hand them out to people. Also players signed shirts, hats, jerseys etc. And I would say the session lasted a good 10 mins. I was able to get 12 autographs and they were not just no name players. They included Vilma, Mickens, Ramsey, Jolley, B. Thomas and Kimo. The only sad thing was Coles did not seem into it at all. B. Thomas even brought him a fans picture. The picture was of Coles with the fan and he refused to sign it. Can't wait to hear your thoughts and comments, post away.......
Wow Coles sounds like a tool. Nice report but u are probably expecting too much from the Jets. This practise was being led by a rookie HC and the offence by a rookie OC
Are you sure about the shoulder pads??? Cause they didn't seems like they had them on..... plays were two hand touch not "thud" as shoulder practices usually are.
Players were wearing helmets, pads, and shorts. It was a no contact practice. Vilma's interception seemed like a clean one to me. I wish Chad and Ramsey saw more reps. Bollinger and Clemens took a combined 90% of the reps. Houston had a nice touchdown catch from Ramsey in a one on one drill against Vilma. Cotchery looked OK and made a few nice grabs. The autograph signings were very good. I managed to get a football signed by Chad, Clemens, D'Brick, Baker, Dwight, Mickens and a few others.
It was kind of a buzzkill. I was hoping they'd practice in pads, and that they would show off Chad a lot more because it's in front of the fans and everything. I sat with Mantana Soss. The practice was basically a bunch of walkthroughs of special teams and offensive plays. The only real action was the game situation at the end, but with no pads, it was kind of lame. Like on one play, Cotchery caught it, and he clearly would have gotten out of bounds, but he was touched just before he got there, so the clock kept running, and that drive stalled because of it. Vilma and Trevor Johnson had picks. Vilma's was off of Bollinger, Johnson's was off Clemens's pass that bounced around a few guys until Johnson finally brought it down. It was a kind of sloppy practice, with some penalties and with Dwight dropping the first punt of practice.
I was there as well - Thoughts I was lucky enough to be invited to the corporate event, which allowed both field and suite access. I watched a majority of the practice from the mezzanine with a great view of the field, as well as chatting with many on the Jets staff. My thoughts... Chad - As stated, he really got very few reps. As for the drills he did participate in, he looked like, well, Chad. His velocity looked identical to what it's always been. What was nice was that he appeared to know the offense better than anyone else, barking directions from behind the play. It was also interesting to note that he spent a lot of time speaking to Mangini, it appears they have a good relationship. Clemens - He may very well be the QB of the future, but he is not the QB who gives us a chance to win this year. Nice arm (seem pass to Dreesen was pretty), but several bad decisions as well. He does look comfortable dropping back. Bollinger - I was surprised most by what looked to me like "happy feet". He never got comfortable in the pocket. My guess is he is the odd man out... Ramsey - Good arm in drills, nothing else to say after today's practice since he did nothing in scrimmage situations. D'Brick - If he doesn't have the longest arms in the world, they are pretty close. He also seems to move very well, fluid for a lineman. Watching him handle everyone that came at him makes me think he is the real deal. Houston - I'm not sure how you can evaluate a RB in non-tackling drills in shells only, so I won't try. Barton - He seemed to be all over the place, I think we missed him more than anyone thought we would. Vilma - Looked like they are moving him around quite a bit, on the int he really took a deep drop. Bet here is that he will never line up the same way twice in a row. Drew Coleman - Worked with the first team at CB, we may have our third year in a row with a rookie DB starting the season. Graham - The man can kick, 'nuf said. 4-3 or 3-4? - They lined up both ways. They also line up with 2 men down on at least one play. I think they will play whatever they think matches up best. Interesting off the field tidbits from chatting with staffers...Mangini's clamp down on information comes from knowledge of what other coaches are doing. For example, there seems to be an unwritten rule that since Training Camps are open, you don't send scouts. Well, not the Pats, who it seems routinely send scouts to rival training camps. Chances are a lot of the fun stuff won't be installed in Public camps. Additionally, the Pats also record and monitor the TV reports of their opponent the week prior to their game. Basically, they feel like they walk into every week with an advantage because they know what's coming. While you may think it's a small detail, it obviously helps. Finally, Mangini may be young, but he it appears he is more in control that Herm ever was. Mangini knows EVERY detail, and better yet expects everyone else to know them as well. The Jets won't win every game, but it will not be due to lack of preparation. Hope everyone enjoys.
Mangini was involved in everything. When Herm would blow a horn or a whistle to get people to do something else, they did it eventually. When Mangini does it, everyone gets there and starts immediately. Chad: looked like himself. Not himself of 2002 (granted, there really wasn't much to see here), but himself of 2003 and 2004. Kellen: Good arm, good talent, forced passes into triple coverage a few times that had me wondering what the hell he was doing. Brooks: Didn't look terrible, but he just seems nervous all the time. He's probably an NFL-caliber QB, but as a #3. Ramsey: Who knows. The few passes I saw him throw (he was separate in most of the drills) weren't that great. Runningbacks: Hard to tell without pads Cotchery: Had a lot of balls thrown to him because he was getting open, but he dropped a couple. Not the easiest catches, but one that a starter in the NFL should make. Smith: Looked pretty quick, but dropped passes that should be caught. Coles: Looked like Coles. We know what he is. He absolutely schooled Justin Miller in a short coverage drill, and he made a great catch in the end zone on a fade route. Vilma: Good practice, had a pick. Drew Coleman: I was trying to find out who #30 was all day, and he looked pretty good. Graham: Didn't have the Godlike day everyone said he was having, but he had a good day. Nugent: Only missed the 62 yarder. Brick: Manhandled people the times I watched him. Barrett: Barely saw him all day, was he playing? Baker: Made a few nice catches in the end zone for TDs. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a nice role in the offense, at least in the red zone. Snell: Went in the locker room early, not sure why. Wasn't sure if he came back out or not. He looked fine running off, but it was impossible to see if there was a problem. Rhodes: Had a pass interference penalty, but he and Chad were the only ones that played to the crowd. I like this kid a lot.
anyone over 11 years old looking for autographs has problems......coles is a tool eh? seems like hes ppretty nuts...not a big coles guy, and not a great post here by me....anyway........
Why the heck did this surprise you? He's had them his whole football life You do realize he has the wingspan of someone who is 7'5" I believe, right? NFL rules say you can remove people from camp and scouts will not attempt if and ONLY if attending the practice is free. If you charge, then a scout can attend if he pays. Interesting, and smart by the pats...
It certainly doesn't help when our former coach would give away our gameplans on Sportscenter...lol. Recording them really wasn't necessary with Herm
I assumed it was an unwritten rule that you don't send scouts to training camp but to hear that the Patriots might do it, is not at all suprising.
