Rex said positive things about gholston last season but he still didn't bother bringing him back this season. While you're on his roster he is gonna support you whether you deserve it or not.

What can he possibly gain by calling out Smith? Smith's problem has nothing to do with lack of effort but lack of ability. Calling him out isn't going to motivate Smith to be a better player.

Uhh, actually Kerry Rhodes was benched and so was Eric Smith. Brodney Pool just happened to get hurt 3 plays into the game he started.

Kerry Rhodes didn't suck in 2009. He was a very average player and much better than what the Jets are getting out of Eric Smith this season.

He had two major flaws, he was a soft player not hitting very hard and he was earning star money for average performance. That's why he's not a Jet right now.

Eric Smith for all his other flaws hits like a truck when he can line one up and he's making average player money.

  4. Well Pool has been hurt. Which is why Smith has been on the field in the first place. Smith is a good 3rd safety who is great on special teams. but he's limited as a full time starter.

There's nothing else to really say.

Didn't Rex say something about "if anything he's been playing too much"? Smith can have a role on this team as sort of a hybrid nickel safety/linebacker but as an actual coverage safety he struggles. The talent level on this defense isn't as high as the level of results they get due to the scheme and Smith is a perfect example of a guy that can be useful in the right spots but too often will get exposed.

Smith is a good role player, he shouldn't be starting.

He's the Wayne Hunter of safeties, he's the best backup safety in the league. Look what happens when he becomes a full time starter

Smith is actually not bad in coverage within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. That's because he can cover his guy by chucking him hard in the first few steps. That's kind of the definition of a 46 safety. The Jets unfortunately aren't playing much 46 this season unlike last year. That makes Smith a fish out of water because he's having to cover guys further down the field where he can't touch them without drawing a flag.

If the Jets fail to make the play-offs, Rex will have no choice but to change his ways next year, this is a business, not a marriage.

Eric Smith is a total turd, horrible player and a cancer to the team

Wasn't Pool healthy early on in the year though? I'm not sure if he was but I think he was.

worst starting safety in the NFL-- and doesn't even have TE speed.

    Absolute liability.

    Eric Smith.

He literally provides no value on defense. All he's good for are huge hits that will get flagged every time in the new NFL.

Take Harrison Smith in round 3 or 4 and be happy. There's a Smith who knows what the fuck he is doing.

Ol' Black Ass is a liability in any sort of coverage. The "Hulk smash" attitude can only get him so far.

but Eric Smith is so smart. He went to Harvard, so he must be insanely smart and therefore able to outsmart his opponents, right?
