Is he still under contract? If so do you think other teams may offer him something and more importantly could he play Right Tackle? Then in the instance someone got hurt he could move there and we could bring in a backup
Good question on Turner...anyone know? And, instead of starting another endless line of o-line threads, who do we see as far as FA goes to fix our right side? I've been pimping the draft for a couple of guys but have decided I agree with other posters that we need a solid FA to plug into the starting role(s) on the right side and then use the draft for depth and to learn. I am very interested to see how Ducasse progresses as well through another full off season. He seemed to slowly progress this year...at least he didn't regress. So, he might be depth that stays...and then, of course, we'll add a couple guys or so from the draft.
Love Turner as a G/C... don'tthink he can play T. That said his contract expires and he's a FA... hope he's fine and they bring him back. Wouldn't be surprised if whoever lands Callahan also lands him though.
I like Turner, but if he were the answer at RT, he probably would have beaten out Hunter. They seem to like him as a versatile backup, but I wouldn't trust him, after missing an entire year, as a starting lineman next year. We need more of an upgrade than that.
Turner isn't an OT from what I remember. He's valuable as a backup C and OG though, his presence was missed this year.
1. His contract is expiring. 2. He is an interior lineman, not a tackle. Each position requires different skill set to succeed - so Turner at RT is an experiment doomed to failure even before the start. 3. He just came off a serious injury. I would expect him back at Jets as a backup interior lineman. My guess is, that is about as good as it gets for him
Coming off his injury there's not a single team that would offer him a box of cracker jacks. Therefore, Tanny will offer him a 5 yr, $55M 'extension' to play backup center. And half of TGG will start threads like "Tanny gets it done!!!!", "Tanny's an fn genius!!!!"
Is it possible to get Ravens tackle Ben Grubbs at all in free agency this year? Do we have the cap space?
Strange comment there, I do not hold tanny for being stupid throwing money around, what inspired your comment? Tanny's bet is that he strongly believe in paying up for few but superior talent, and then fill the back-up/2nd string with cheap labour. Therefore he has no problem with trading picks for moving up. This strategy puts a lot of stress on the actual picks and choices jets does, ie if there is the wrong QB or WR paid there is very little beneath to cover up.
Turner was always the tackle eligible...we used ducasse and mulligan in his role a lot and it was a disaster. He also brings a layer of mean that the oline needs at times.
We struggled without Turner and the depth he provided. I would think, if healthy he will be back next year as our first interior lineman off the bench. Also, keep an eye on Moore. If Moore struggles early and Turner is ready to go - he may replace Moore in the lineup.
Im unsure of Moores contract status an what not. But i wouldnt be shocked if we see the FO make another Faneca type move and cut him. Not saying he totally deserves it, but between the bullshit arguments and the lack of steady production, he could have played his last snap as a NYJ. Btw...when we were all praising hunter in the Playoffs last year for replacing woody, I feel we did not take into context Turners role as the 6th OL. We ran alot of those sets and its the basis of our offense to get the RB 4-6 yards at will and work off the play action.
You can always make room for someone but it would be very tight. They are at 118 million now with Leonard, Pouha, Plaxico, Thomas, Tomlinson, Pool, Strickland, Folk, O'Connell, Brunnell, and Turner as free agents (obviously those guys aren't all coming back). The cap will be in the ballpark of 123-125, and they'll get to carry about 7 million over from 2011, so that gets you to 130 to work with. You've got to sign rookies (3 million or so) so you have roughly 10 million to work with plus any restructures you can pull off. Grubbs is also a guard
This is my take as well. I see the major OL move being upgrade RT, and I say that not being as down as many on Hunter, but despite Ferguson's off year, Slauson's slow improvement and Moore's aging, Hunter remains the weakest lineman. But Moore is a real concern, and it is not clear how much upside Slauson has. That being the case and given Turner's coming back from injury, the Jets should get him despite his being an FA. There are too many other areas of the team requiring attention for them to make a big move on the OL with two or more major draft picks or FA moves on the OL. Assuming Turner's leg is fine, it will be a good thing to have him back.
Turner is an excellent backup swing OL. Notrhing more, he would have been huge with Mangold out earlier in the year.
One thing for sure, replacing Moore will be a bigger priority than is given credit for when I read about our offseason priorities. 2 hip surgeries last offseason plus missed weeks of practice late in the season just screams degerative condition. It would be great if Turner is that guy, for continuity sake. New additions to a line take time to fit in.
