Gary Horton: I happened to break down the Jets in the last couple of days on offense. To me, it's scary how bad they could be. They were 31st in the NFL on offense a year ago and they're not as good in terms of personnel this year. They have : - an offensive line in transition that will be good, but not right now. - no backup answer for Martin at RB if he's not healthy. - no real threats at WR, which means that defenses can load up in the box to stop the running game. In my opinion, they're going to be the lowest scoring team in the NFL in 2006. They were also dead last in time of possession, which forces your defense on the field too much, because your offense can't convert third downs. And, if that weren't bad enough, I don't think their passing game has any type of vertical component to loosen up defenses, which means secondaries can jump routes and tighten up coverages. I know it looks like I'm dumping on the Jets, but I didn't realize how dire the situation appears to be, until I studied them the last couple of days. I hope I'm wrong because the Jets fans are loyal and great. > http://sports.espn.go.com/keyword/search?searchString=Gary_Horton&rT=sports
our offense will be better than last yr, thats a guarantee. those rankings from last year shouldnt be a surprise. and that was all due to D-Coord knowing we wouldnt be passing, stacking 8 in the box and watching curtis get hit after 3 yards. trust me, our offense couldnt get any worse. this isnt some kind of news flash, lol.
They have : - an offensive line in transition that will be good, but not right now. - no backup answer for Martin at RB if he's not healthy. - no real threats at WR, which means that defenses can load up in the box to stop the running game. Point 1.... he's right. Point 2.... no one knows the answer to that yet.... so he's wrong. Point 3.... he's wrong. True, there is no proven threat at WR to stretch the field but there are guys that can do it. Brad Smith, Reggie Newhouse and Leon Washington, who has lined up in the slot at TC. Schottenhiemer is not stupid like Herm.... there are ways to beat 8 in the box, and running Martin into the line is not the way to beat it.
Articles like this are crazy. I would bet every penny I have that we will not be the lowest scoring team in the league. It is open season for Jet bashing. I just get the sense that this team will not be that bad.
If we can't get large gains against an eight in the box defense then Schott should hang it up. Herm was terrible when faced with adversity last year and could not adjust at all. This year we seem to have many more options than last year and more people are prepared to play and not just be a body in there.
there will be a lot of pressure on the WRs this year, they need to make plays for our offense to do anything. Penny's accuracy will be very important as well as young WRs stepping in and contributing
Do we really expect Coles to be bad this year at WR? If Penny can come back and survive the season, I was at least hoping that Coles could have a decent season himself.
How is it possible to form an analysis/opinion on how a team will perform when not one down has been played in pre-season yet? More so, personnel has to be better (certain players make others better also) when considering that Chad may be back at full strength. Seems inane to me.
I couldn't have said it better. Also, it gets back to what I'd like to believe, and thats, this type of coaching staff quite possibly can bring out the best in marginal players and maximize the talent. Who says Brad Smith isn't going to be the talk of the NFL this year?
I dont get how they justify this problem at WR argument. Didnt Laveranues Coles run one of the fastest forty times in combine history? And doesnt he regularly catch 75-100 balls per season? Tim Dwight is a burner, McCareins has been successful as a deep threat... By no means do we have the most talented group of receivers in the NFL, but to state that this group is going to be a key weakness of the team is ridiculous.
During Coles' first go around with the Jets and before he sustained that toe injury, his speed was comparable to Santana's. I remember reading articles back then reporting how they "raced" each other during practice. We all sorta forgot how fast he is after his nagging toe injury, and the fact that our QBs were unable to exploit it.
He brings up some pretty valid points. Things may get pretty damn ugly for the Jets depending on how much Pennington can force defenses to respect the passing game.
It's kinda sad that our hopes rest on a twice surgically repaired shoulder. But I'm still gonna dare to dream!
it's not insane, you simply base it on production last year, factor in things like injuries and age, and take a position. nobody is saying that is exactly what will happen, just that it seems likely with what is known now. whether they have played a game yet is irrelevent. predictions can be made at any time. sure, a prediction made after week 3 will probably be more accurate, but that doesn't negate the ability to make a prediction now based on factors that are known, even if they are only based on past production.
that is exactly the point! hmy: a qb with a weak arm scares nobody. a guy with no escapabilty scares nobody. that's why i said all along to start bolly until the o-line jells, then start clemmins.:jets:
the guys a freaking dumbass, all he did was explain exactly how we went 4-12 last season. none of that has nething to do with 2006. expect a mediocre offense, but much improved from the 2005 season. this offense is good enough to win some games. last years offense after the injuries, couldnt have scored on my highschools JV team.
I've been saying all along we will win 4 games this season. It will come as no surprise to me. However, I expect this team to look much better by Christmas than we looked by the time the calendar turned over back in January. More crappy journalism. What a shock...
