Jets | Askew on the bubble?
    Tue, 15 Aug 2006 05:57:20 -0700

Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports the move by the New York Jets to bring in FB Jamar Martin could mean trouble for starting FB B.J. Askew, who is more runner than blocker and has had a quiet camp. Also, it doesn't bode well for Askew that rookie FB Stacy Tutt is working with the first team this week.

I am a Michigan fan also, and he was a beast at Michigan. I would have liked to see what he could have done.

With a young, slightly underweight offensive line the Jets need somebody who wants to throw his body around back there at FB.

I was hoping Askew could be our short yardage pounder. I have liked him since we drafted him, but he has never really shown anything. Gotta keep telling myself the coaching staff knows what they are doing, have faith.

Michigan is Michigan & the NFL is the NFL. It is like comparing apples & oranges

he is not exactly a rookie anymore. He has had plenty of chances to show what he could do and hasn't done anything. I'd be surprised if he makes this team..

And don't take it like I am comparing Bush to Askew, but Askew has never been given a chance since he has been here, plus we had Sowell.

    I think that's pushing it.

Anyway, I like Askew but he's had time to show he belongs. And if the coaches don't think he can, that's their call. I hate for them to sour on so many guys so soon like they have with Strait and the running backs.

I agree, Askew has had his time to shine, unlike someone like Cotchery. Askew hasn't brought his game to the level demanded of him, and as such, he may very well be expendable.

What's the cap hit if he is shown the door?

Askew was always in Herms doghouse because of his attitude.. If he wasn't faring well on Herms teams how do you think he is doing for Mangini's??

San Diego had Lorenzo Neal at fullback who is much more of a blocker than a runner, and I wouldn't be surprised if Schott is bringing that same philisophy here.

Well we may disagree on Blaylock, but we surely agree on Askew. Another wasted draft pick from the Bradway regime who has never showed a thing. Not only doesn't he try to bust his a** and do whatever the team asks of him, he actually had the gall to complain last year that he was more of a RB than FB. IMO, he is not that good at either. Personally, I would have already cut him and would have retained Sowell as the hold the fort guy.....

Why is it a mistake? What exactly are the Jets losing if he walks? What positives does he bring to the table?

I'm surprised. Given the fact that the Patriots liked to give FBs occasional carries and catches, I thought Askew would've had a chance to flourish. I guess we'll be more like Marty ball, with a traditional blocking FB.

Askew is a pounder, who can pound at the goal line, he can catch in the backfield and he is also shifty and can run between the tackles, he should be given a real good shot.
