D-Line (3-4) DE: Kimo / D Rob NT: Grady Jackson / D Rob / Kimo DE: Shaun Ellis / Dave Ball D-Line (4-3) DE: Kimo DT: D Rob DT: Grady DE: Ellis The difference that Grady would make on paper is astounding, he would be worth whatever we have to pay him. Ideally, he plays 2 years for us while we continue to cultivate young talent behind him (Tui and Pouha). Our run defense would go from pathetic to damn near outstanding (on paper) if we can land the big guy.
350 lb. veteran linemen don't ever get picked up before training camp... Wilkinson was the other best available and he was signed earlier this week when the Dolphins realized the Jets had a terrible interior run defense and didn't want us to get him first. I think Jackson is better than Wilkinson. Lets put it this way, who would you rather have on D... Haloti Ngata with Ray Lewis behind him OR Grady Jackson with Vilma behind him I would take the veteran NT with Vilma (the Ray-Ray clone) any day!
I agree. If Grady is in good enough shape it would be a HUGE signing. Robertson could elevate his game to a Pro Bowl level when the Jets switch to a 4-3 because Grady would draw a lot of double teams.
The fact that we don't have another 350lb veteran lineman on our roster... maybe? I think if Grady is in shape, then he gives us the depth, talent and size to put a viable defense on the field this season.
I'd rather sign an NT than an RB, that much I'll say. I don't think Jackson is a long term answer or anything, but we do need more beef up front, especially since Pouha and Pope are gone.
Jets | Mangini comments on G. Jackson Wed, 16 Aug 2006 11:57:38 -0700 During his press conference Wednesday, Aug. 16, New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini commented on free agent DT Grady Jackson's (Packers) visit with the team. "We bring in a lot of guys and look at them and see whether they fit. Grady is a guy that we will discuss just like we will discuss a lot of other guys at other positions; it's not unique to him."
I said "veteran." Besides if Tui was worth a damn we wouldn't be auditioning guys, clearly Tui is not starting quality.
Dude seriously, the fatter does not necessarily mean the better. And honestly, Grady Jackson would not likely start for us, he would be a rotation player.
If our ILBs are ever going to progress in the 3-4, they will need a NT rotation that will at least occasionally demand double-teams for inside blitzes. Robertson has not progressed to the point where he can accomplish this and no other player on the roster is worth a turd at the position. If Grady can in any way approach a fitness level that can support a decent number of snaps per game, he should probably be signed. The strength in his upper body is hard to match up against with a single offensive lineman.
ive wanted grady since he was released last year. he would be perfect for this scheme and the way i think sutton and mangini would envision it is moving robertson from nt to de (sapp like) letting grady clog up the front for vilma. sub kimo in and out at nt and de. thats the ideal id think because after game 1, it was clear that robertson does not cut it as a nt, just not big enough and its hurting our best players game as well so i really hope we sign him
