and moving forward this offseason? We drafted a player to play DE. I would assume since he is a first round pick that they would like to get him out there immediately. Therefore, DeVito job is looking alittle shaky. If we were to try and move him tomorrow, what kind of stock does he have. Well we also drafted a WR. Obviously, we just signed Chaz Schilens. Do we still need him, and if not what is he worth, if anything? Last but not least we drafted an ILB, most likey. We know that we allowed Scott to pursue a trade so what is he worth? I understand his contract is guaranteed, but there are ways around that. We could split the guarantee, or he could get a new contract that would obsolve us from the contract.
I don't know how to quote but none of the players you've mentioned are going anywhere. First off, DeVito is on the last year of his rookie deal. He's making peanuts and he's more valuable to our team than he is on the open market. I don't think that Coples was brought in to replace him immediately. We have 4 WRs on the roster, one of whom is Turner. Chaz is also on the books for something like $500K this year. Why trade him? We've been trying to trade Scott since the season ended, and clearly there's absolutely no market for him. Ryan has been pimping him all off season about how he lost weight and he's a step faster but no one is biting. We're eating his salary this year so he's not going anywhere.
No cap cuts are likely, only 4 players save us more than 1.7M if cut: eric smith 2M Moore 3 Devito 3 Keller 3 Scott actually would cost us cap space to trade unless he renegotiates, and I can't see a team wanting him for more than 1 year enough to give up anything at all for him.
At this point nobody will be going anywhere for cap reasons until the start of camp. They were still 8 million under before the draft.
To the contrary, if Scott is traded, we save a lot of cap space. If he is released, we take on a hit higher than his current cap. Why? When traded, the guaranteed portion of his contract is also traded to the new team. Jets are on the hook for only the accelerated left over signing bonus. I believe if he's traded, the cap hit would be around $3mil, saving the Jets almost $3mil in cap space (current cap charge is $5.95mil). I hope he gets traded, cuz we can't release him. With him being traded away, it will solve a lot of the cap tension looming for future years.
Money of course, exactly as we did with Ellis last year after drafting the unproven rookie Wilkerson. And Ellis was a lot better than DeVito.
Why cut Devito? It doesn't matter who "starts" at DE there will be an on-going rotation. Devito should stay.
we didnt cut ellis. His contract was up. We offered him a minimum deal to return, the pats offered him $4 million so he went there. And Devito wasn't our best DL a year ago, Willkerson was. The kid was in the top 5 in the NFL in TFL as a rookie a year ago. He's going to be special. Hopefully he can help push Couples to have similar success this year.
He was 19th, but still he did play great. And I know he wasn't our best DL (Pouha was), but I still think he played better than Mo Wilk. As for Ellis, we didn't "technically" cut him, but we could have EASILY re-signed him for very little, and we basically let him go.
1. Depth on the DL is important, guys are constantly rotating. I don't think DeVito is going anywhere. 2. Cedric Benson is incredibly mediocre and not worth signing.
Ellis was offered 4 million dollars from NE, we offered him a minimum deal, why the hell would he have signed back with us?
dont think Scott is going to be doing much mentoring to a kid who came here to replace him.. Scott isnt going to retire, he's playing for a new contract. on another note, the fact that Upshaw went to the Ravens is scary. That kid is gonna be a monster.
