whewww, I shed a tear almost. He is just a quality person. I am glad to have him a NY Jet. He's a class act!
Selfishly, I'd like Curtis to stick with the Jets after his playing career is over. But a man like this can probably do more good for the world elsewhere. Not to get on a soap box, but if he can change the lives of a couple troubled kids like he did his own, the world will be a better place. The day I buy my first authentic Jets jersey (I had a bunch of knockoffs growing up), it'll be #28. Because no one will ever wear that one again.
He'll be placed on PUP-active soon which frees a roster spot and keeps him out of the first 6 games. The Jets then have that time to evaluate, and after 6 weeks have to decide to put him on the roster, or put him on iR.
Total class act. If he never plays another down he's still one of the all-time greats and a first ballot Hall-of-Famer.
He can do both, just like he is doing both now. During the offseason he does a ton of charity work. No reason he couldn't do the same if he was a coach. I think the organization should do everything they can to keep him in the fold, and Mangini would be foolish not to try to get him to sign on as an assistant RB coach (at least I think so). Then during the offseason and down time he can do charity work. You don't let people like this walk. He gives everything this organization asks him too and more. You want to keep that kind of loyalty and dedication around.
Curtis transcends the NFL, and should be an example to all other professional sports players. He proves it is what's in your heart that's the most important part of being a team player. Not the amount of numbers on your paycheck! Hats off to a class act like Curtis.
he sure does, hes my favorite all time NFL player. thats just me though. I would love for one day if the stadium made it a point for fans to wear martin jersey's, and maybe just hand out cheap #28 shirts out at the game for those who dont have one. imagine a sold out meadowlands in a sea of green and 28's
Very impressive story all the way around - the Jets not simply cutting him if necessary, and Martin restructuring to ease the cap hit. Give props to Curtis for it, but Mangini and Tannenbaum deserve some credit too. IMO Martin is clearly a first ballot HOFer (although surprisingly to me, some talking heads claim he isn't even a sure HOFer), should have his number retired by the Jets, but most importantly seems to be a truly fine person.
This is from thehuddle.com. Curtis is the true meaning of "TEAM ME"! Curtis Martin - RB, New York Jets 08/22/06 Curtis Martin restructured his contract last week so that the Jets can cover themselves if Martin is unable to play this year. Martin was scheduled to earn $2.5 million this year but that has been reduced to $810,000 as the veteran minimum. If he is placed on injured reserve, he will get $475,000. Huddle Up: Just another sign that one of the fantasy greats is not looking like he can play this year. The Jets HC Eric Mangini said there is no change in Martin's situation but lowering his contract to the lowest possible and acquiring Kevan Barlow already says enough.
Thank you Curtis. I only have a Chrebet jersey. I will be buying a Curtis Martin jersey asap. When he retires, the Jets should give him a job somewhere within the organization - whether on the field or in the administration. He would be perfect to have working with the young players to teach them the meaning of TEAM.
Curtis Martin is the epitome of what an NFL player should be like. It's too bad that there are very few, if any, players as classy as he is. I'm sure once he retires he can help the team somehow in terms of coaching.
I love Curtis, but I think he's done and he's known it for awhile now. All this PUP list and reduced salary stuff is just so we can spread his signing bonus over more years. We can't take the whole hit right now.
They had SNY on the TV at the restaurant I went to on lunch, and I could see but not hear. They showed Jets camp and had Curtis taking handoffs and running around. I guess this could have been old footage, but has anyone heard anything about him being at practice today?
What a player, what a teammate, what a class act. He's everything every young player should want to be. :martin:
