I hear from Mangini article at www.nyjets.com that Jones is getting work at LG. I saw Kendall was getting abused in game tapes. Jones will be Jets' starting LG soon, unless Jets' can find a better LG. (Max Gilles ...where are you ?) Kendall is finished as a full-time starter, but very valuable being a back-up.
Kendall got bullied last year, I hope the presence of D'Brick and Mangold will take some attention away from him as teams look to pick on the rookies, otherwise he could turn out to be a liability.
I'd love to have Jones at LG not because I think it's his natural position, but because I want our O-line of the future to have as much time to gel as possible. ALthough, I guess taking out Jones at RT just means another geezer steps in over there. Eh... still, I want Jones in there somewhere.
No way in the WORLD Jones starts over Kendall. For starters, Jones is terrible, but I'll admit I do not know how he'd be at guard, and Kendall was not ABUSED. Secondly, and more importantly, it's important to have someone with experience on that side to help out with line calls since we have a rookie on either side of the LG.
If this is the case, we're in trouble. We need Kendall's leadership and knowledge on the Oline. Jones is no replacement for Kendall.
leadership and knowledge don't help you score from the 1. If he's to weak at the point of attack we need to find someone who can hold his own.
Jones certatinly has ideal size and extremely good athleticism for LG..but he will need to get alot stronger and show much better technique against the bull rush to truly succeed...I guess give him alil while w/ Wise and see what happens...it cant hurt to try it.
No doubt about next year's draft: 1st rounder is the best D-lineman available, then a RB (unless one of our 4 establishes something this year), and then we need to begin the Guard Grab, getting as much nasty beef as we can get our hands on. Got a build a mountain of line for Clemens and our run to the SB in 2008.
Max Gilles is somewhere eating a ham sandwich covered in gravy. That guy was an overweight, malconditioned turd who couldn't even be motivated by the prospect of millions of dollars to get himself in adequate shape. We're looking at a more athletic, versatile line. -X-
Jones is just not all that good. He's too light to be a grader and too slow to be a whippet. LT and C are really the only positions he could hold down and he's not really quick enough to play LT.
Facts-Kendall, Moore and Mawae were all abused last year. The center of our line was every bit as putrid as the tackles were.
Kendall was abused last year at OC, not LG. Jones was terrible at RT, but played well at LT. I agree that Jones needs to add some bulk (muscle not fat) to play LG, but I think he can pull it off. If he does, and replaces Kendall in 2007, we'll have one of the youngest and talented OL's in the league. A 2nd round RT in the 2007 draft wouldn't hurt either.
