Like I said in the game thread, I still think a huge chunk of what we're going to do on offense is missing, and I'm not just talking about the wildcat. I will say this, its obvious we need some type of other weapon, whether that be a TE, WR, or true 3rd down RB.
It was never going to be a force to be reckoned with, but it went from putrid to average looking tonight. Their RZ execution goes up, we could put up 17-24 points a game. But if you do this and at the same limit the possession the other teams get, you could win a multitude of games. I do like that we are getting big plays down the field. More of a chance of big plays opening up everything underneath and big plays have more of a chance of breaking into big TD plays. It seems like we don't have to execute 9-10 plays in a row perfectly to get in the RZ like last year. The offense is much different, in the regular season we will see if it is better for us
It wasn't average looking tonight. It just played a a below average defense and still couldn't score a TD. I'm just so disgusted that the offense has been so mangled the last couple of seasons. The whole organization has contributed to the problems from management to coaching to the players and now we're going to get to watch a Jet team struggle to score 300 points without any serious injuries. If Sanchez goes down we'll struggle to score 200.
Well like it or not this is what we're stuck with. It's conservative as hell, and that's what Rex wants. It's not sexy, but it can work. But you need to get Tebow doing what he does well, you need decent protection (which was WAY better tonight), and for fuck's sake can we get Powell some carries against a real defense? We really need to mix him in with Greene, because the guy looks like ass until you soften up their D-line.
Offensive troubles is right... I am not going to buy into the theory that pre-season games mean nothing. They are at least played to find out how well you drafted and how much depth you have. So far I've decided that Coples looks good and we have no depth to brag about! Until we play our first regular season game against Buffalo, however, I am not going to drink the kool-aid like some of you have. Prove that these 3 games have meant nothing.
Based on what? Simply because there are actual things to be concerned about on offense and I stated that? I dont understand what brushing this shit under the carpet and saying not scoring a TD doesnt matter. Fact: We have 3 injuries to our top 3 TE's (and still dont have a blocking TE. Fact: Greene is average and the start of a regular season isn't going to change that and make him break more tackles. Fact: Stephen Hill isnt ready to be our #2 and we are severely lacking in the offensive weapons department. Now, these arent things that are formed from overreacting, its based off of what we have seen in the last 3 games. You can go ahead and continue to chalk it up to whatever, but there is reason for concern on offense. Yes, I think our offense will improve, but I truly think Tanny has to make a few moves to add more skill players on offense. Side note: Sanchez looked good, has looked pretty good all preseason. There honestly cant be any kind of debate about the QB position. If you didnt watch the game, his stat sheet wasnt impressive really but that's mostly because of drops. OL and Sanchez got a check in my book and was pleased with them.
As a D, you can call a random play on 1st and 10 (assuming its not goal line situation) and it might work. As an offense, you can't call a random play and be successful with it. Since its the preseason, the offensive playbook is basically very limited. You run plays that you want to be successful at during the season. However, you don't game plan against opponents. So the play you want to run in preseason, might be a play the D excels at stopping it. But as an offense, you still run it because you go in with your own gameplan based solely on your strengths and weaknesses. What Im saying is, there is ZERO reliability in what you see in preseason. I need to see 2-3 regular season games before I can start worrying about it (not that it would matter). In preseason, the CS is more concerned about which player to keep and which player to cut. They judge how players react to different situations. And thats why they want to test different plays to possibly see which TE to keep or which WR plays a certain role with more authority, or which OL is picking up his assignments etc.
Fact: Injuries are part of the game. Keller will be fine and so will Cumberland. Fact: I don't care if Greene doesn't break a tackle the entire season. Running for a 1k yard season behind an OL that was weak or injured and still managing 4.2 ypc is good enough for me. Anything over 4.0 YPC is gravy in the NFL. You might not like the comparison, but the HoF Curtis Martin's career average was 4.0 and he rushed for more than 4.2 ypc only twice in his long career. This gets overblown here. Fact: Stephen Hill is no Randy Moss and we all know that. He played pretty good today, albeit the drops. Its a mental thing and he'll learn on the fly. Remember Edwards? He became one of the most sure handed WR on the Jets in his 2nd season.
Only one team managed to score less than 200 pts last season, whereas only 7 teams failed to reach 300. I will remind you when we reach 300 points. Freaking out over preseason game is like wearing a wrist band saying "I support the troops" - they are both useless and serve no purpose.
Here's my two cents based on what I saw last night (not taking into account injuries): We saw last night why Tebow should not be our starting QB but why he will help out our offense. While I would have liked to have seen us score a TD I'm not as concerned as most people because the offense we are seeing is not the same one we will see week 1 and here is why I think that is the case. Before I continue, let me say I'm not happy we didn't score and I'm not saying things are all good, just saying we haven't seen the offense we're going to see - I could be wrong but with Howard making the start and the OL issues they probably stuck a bit more to the basics - Holmes and Kerley were used in very limited roles, even Turner seemed to be on the field a bit less and he's been our top receiver in the preseason - Most importantly, Tebow in the wildcat will highlight what he does extremely well and downplay what he does not. Whether or not we use much of it, teams will have to game plan for it and it will open up things for the regular offense. rebow will also extend drives and be a weapon in the red zone that should lead to more points To me the OL looked much better and Sanchez looked more comfortable and has been throwing well all preseason (minus that one pass against the Giants). Add Holmes and Kerley shaking off the rust and the added dimension of the wildcat/Tebow and I think our offense might surprise us....or at least I sure damn hope so
