Also on the ESPN pregame shows yesterday morning, put up that handy 'how many TDs the jets scored in preseason' joking how it will take up an entire show. 48 pts.
These guys just transition from one shock statement to another. They'll trash a team for weeks/months and if the team turns out to be good, they'll throw out a quick "well they're better than i thought" and keep it moving. There is never any accountability for incorrect predictions (even the ones stated as if they were facts) so I'm starting to ask myself why I allow them to get to me. I guess what bothers me is that it is their job to analyze these teams, and there should rarely be surprises if they know what to look for, but it's obvious these guys don't know what to look for since it seems they are always being surprised. That level of shitty analysis would get me fired from my job - yet these guys continue to be employed. And I'm not saying this team is the real deal, and I'm not saying they are a one-week wonder. But that is the difference, you need to analyze teams one game at a time and not make sweeping generalizations - because shit changes constantly in sports.
Because it's all shtick, not journalism. Journalism for the most part is dead. Rather than analyze a team and learn about all the players, draft picks, etc, you create a simple, polarized, newsworthy story for them, and people that don't know better tune in because it grabs their attention (what is going on with the Jets soap opera today! when Jets camp was no different than the other 31) and people that do know better devote attention to them because it pisses them off. Coverage of the Tebow circus, the bashing of the Jets for melodramatic, and non-factual reasons is going to get more ratings than talking about depth at tight end. It sucks, but it is what it is. Look at Fatcessa. I know he is a fat blowhard, but he at least knows a little bit of football. He knows the Jets went out and put together a near flawless effort yesterday. But you know who could say that on the radio? Anyone. Instead, he has built up this huge anti-Jet persona, where after every win, people want to know, "is this the game that Fatass is finally going to give the Jets credit", and they're all going to tune in, and when the answer is inevitably "no", they're going to get riled up, and call in the show, and keep listening, and the ratings will go through the roof. Nobody is even trying to paint an accurate picture anymore, just the most sensational one.
