Nothing decided Mangini still unsure on who will be Jets' starting QB Posted: Sunday August 27, 2006 5:02PM; Updated: Sunday August 27, 2006 7:53PM Chad Pennington, who appears to be the favorite, went the longest of any of the Jets quarterbacks in Friday's loss to the Giants. Rich Kane/US PRESSWIRE RELATED ? BANKS: NYC teams facing QB questions HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Even though the regular season is two weeks away, Jets coach Eric Mangini insists he hasn't chosen a starting quarterback. Those who thought Mangini would finally choose between Chad Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens on Sunday were disappointed. "All four of those guys need to be ready to play Friday," Mangini said, referring to the preseason finale against Philadelphia. "That's the way we're going to approach the week with all the players. They need to be ready to play for as long as we decide to keep them in the game." Asked if he might not announce a starter even in the days before the Sept. 10 opener at the Tennessee Titans, Mangini said, "It would depend on whether someone has distinguished himself by the time we get to Tennessee." Such indecision might bother players on some other teams, but Pennington, who started the 13-7 loss to the Giants on Friday night, said "It's not that big of an issue." "Everything's new here," Pennington said. "Coach understands the situation and he'll make the decision when he feels the time is right." Pennington said he thought all the quarterbacks on the roster had the same perspective. "We all feel we're starters and when our number is called we are the starter," he said. "We have to prepare that way." Pennington still appears to be the favorite for the starting job as the preseason winds down. After returning from Knoxville, Tenn., where he visited his ill father early last week, he got his second preseason start and went the longest of any Jets quarterback this summer. The performance had its ups and downs. The Jets scored no points in his eight drives, nor in the two drives he directed in the preseason opener at Tampa Bay. But almost 11 months after his second rotator cuff surgery of 2005, Pennington looked sharper on some passes against the Giants than he did most of last summer, when he was still coming off his first shoulder surgery. "There were some throws I made that I hadn't been able to make in a while," he said. "Especially on the post throws, I haven't had the confidence in making them. Being able to do that in a game really gives me confidence." On two of those post routes, Pennington hit Justin McCareins for a 40-yard catch-and-run and Laveranues Coles for 17 yards. Both completions converted third downs. Notes: Mangini said he singled out the play of RB Derrick Blaylock, TE Chris Baker, rookie C Nick Mangold, DT Dewayne Robertson and LB Jonathan Vilma when he spoke to the team Sunday morning. ... The Jets waived 12 players to get down to the 75-man roster limit ahead of the NFL's Tuesday deadline. The only players cut with pro experience were cornerbacks Rayshun Reed and D.J. Johnson and LB Alonzo Jackson. Find this article at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20.../08/27/bc.fbn.jets.quarterbacks.ap/index.html
I would like to note that chad called eric mangini ''coach'' we have some athletes now like terrell owens calling their coaches by their first names  thought i would point that out.
i guess thats why pennington started 2/3 preseason games (he also would've been the starter the 2nd game so make that 3/3)...because our coaches dont know who to start. right...
thats BS... chads the starter... why would ramsey not even get in against the giants if he was in serious contention? no way clemens starts. mangini is just doing his whole belichek impression and trying to motivate chad... who be undercenter against the titans
this is such BS. this is just something to feed to the media. I dont understand why mangini wont just name pennington the freaking starter! i mean we all now it's inevitable that chad starts.
it isn't just quarterbacks who are fighting for starting spots....Eric is doing it with all the positions. If he names a starting QB, other guys are going to start to get impatient for their call. It's a good training camp
i would like to note that DreEsssens Avatar makes me sick everytime i look at it...therefor i cannot read any of your posts
Actually if you think about it, what Mangini says is true. No one really has separated themselves from the pack. You could make a good argument really for any of them starting and an equally valid argument against any one starting. I do believe that going into the game Chad and Kellen were 1-2, and in that order. If Chad plays well, he gets the job. As it turns out, he did not do anything and Kellen came in. Now, if Kellen had lit it up, he might have won the starting gig right there. But to be honest, both were very subpar. Chad's weaknesses were exposed again, and Kellen showed some of the immaturity that you expect from a rookie. Thinking back to last week, Ramsey did not do anything, but Bollinger actually moved the club but struggled in the red zone (again). So the truth is that there is NO CLEAR CUT CANDIDATE still. Everyone has their favorite and has picked who they think should start but there are big plusses and minuses on both sides of the ledger for each player. In the end, I believe that Mangini is telling the truth and it is not spin. It is still undecided who will be our starter.
I think we are going to keep 4 QB. Ultimately I think Mangini plans to start Clemens and have Ramsey as his back up. Right now Pennington is going to give him the best chance to install a new O and Bollinger is a good insurance policy if the line breaks down.
the only person worthy of getting rid of right now is pennington and we all know we just cant do that now can we
i dont think that anyone is funny that calls Chad "noodle arm" or anything else that refers to his arm stregth...but i find that avatar quite ammusing
teyll you what though these days blaylock is definetly look like the starting rb he was been running well the last 2 games.
I agree with that part. I really believe he wants Clemens who is his guy to start but too many of you Chad lovers would throw a fit. He knows and we know Chad is not the long term answer but he wants to keep the fans happy. Big mistake. Pete Carrol came in and tried not to stir the pot too much and he was one and done. Now I know Eric will be around for a while but a true coach does his job and to hell with those that don't like it. The best coaches in the game take control and do it their way. Winning games will win over fans, not losing by a little each week. Chad is the losing by a little while Clemens could or couldn't not be the homerun. That's why we traded for Ramsey, we swung for the fence hoping he wasn't the problem but stuck out. So what, move on and take another swing at the fence. A safe bunt might get you on base and even win a baseball game once in a while, but a grand slam will always win the game and make the fans fall in love.
it isnt exactly the making fun of chad part... the combo of that face and that body just honestly makes me feel sick to my stomach
Sometimes the truth hurts. Thinking back about how happy I was to have the Jets draft Chad and all the wasted hope on him makes me feel sick now that he is a weak armed washed up QB that is just waiting for the next big hit to sideline him for yet another season.
Lol wouldn't it be awesome in Clemens played lights out! That would put Mangini in quite the bind, b/c we all know he wants chad to be the guy but chad is playing less the stellar so he can't seperate from the others. We'll see what happens in the final preseason game, but we know by default chad is our passer.
There was never a competition, as long as Chad proved he was healthy he was the starter and regardless whether he has named a starter we all know Chad is starting 9/10 in Tennessee.
Chad hasn't proved he has a healthy NFL arm in fact he is proving the opposite. After really thinking about it I believe Mangini is starting Chad because he is a smart veteran and he has the best chance of helping the rest of the Offensive players get up to speed with the way plays should be run, the language, who should be in what spot etc. Say what you want about Chad the guy is smart and a coaches son. Once the entire O is functioning it will be much easier to put the rookie in. They get the added benifit of Clemens getting a chance to learn and aclimate to the NFL. When and if the rest of the O is ready Clemens can smothly move into the starting spot and the O can utilize what his arm and release bring to the table.
