If you were say a top scout or had another "non-GM" role and someone offered you the chance to triple your salary and be a GM in NY you would turn it down because you didnt get the right to immediately replace the successful incumbent coach? Doesnt seem likely to me.

Yea let's fire Rex (who's had the most success with this franchise since Weeb) and go hire a top college coach or a popular offensive coordinator and start this whole thing over again! Considering all of the disaster hires happening around the NFL, we should be grateful for having Rex.

He should be, we are a poorly coached team.

This sums things up nicely, so I'll just add this: of the 11 coaches hired in 2009, only Ryan and Jim Schwartz are still employed.

When so few coaching hires actually work out, teams are wise to hold on to a good leader when they find one.

Anyone who says Rex needs to go or anything even close to that is out of their mind.

If it hasn't already been said here is the problem. Tannenbaum deserves to be fired 10 times over..for all of his horrible draft picks in recent years, for all of the horrible contracts he has given (Sanchez, Holmes and Hunter in the last off-season alone) and for his total lack of football understanding when it comes to judging talent. If he his there are almost no GMs who wouldn't want their own coach..that is where Rex is in trouble..unfortunately Johnson won't bite the bullet and do what should be done so everything will just get worse for a few more years.

Im assuming we get a real GM. An establshed football guy and GM. I fyou wanna promote some shlub and tell him he has to keep Rex, maybe that can happen. But then we still have no GM.

Under my assumption, bringing in a real GM, theres no way Rex stays. Thats just how th game is played dude.

I'm trying to think of examples of GM's that have recently changed and the first thing that comes to mind is Holmgren in Cleveland who kept Mangini his first season. Maybe Holmgren falls into your "shlub" category. Obviously he didn't have prior GM experience.

Usually the solid GM's are already employed though.

Rex has been pretty successful thus far as the Jets head coach. I would imagine a new GM would at least consider him to keep the position, especially if he believes that talent was the biggest problem with the Jets as many are suggesting.

Neither Rex nor Tanny are going anywhere

If anything, they will bring in a player personnel guru to run football operations
Tanny has ability as a cap specialist

Here lies the problem with not cleaning house in the 2009 offseason and simply hiring a HC and defensive staff. There's no clear delineation between administrations, so they will never really can the GM and CS all together. Same thing with the Schotty situation, because Schotty wasn't a Rex hire, he was prior service. Same thing when Herm left, Woody demoted Bradway and promoted Tanny but fired neither of them.

The Jets will probably end up firing Tanny (or more likely, demoting him to CAP specialist again) and hiring some GM that has different ideas than Rex (quite possibly from within), and like the friction between Herm and Bradway, it will ruin the cohesion between personnel and coaching and then Rex will be fired a couple of years later. This team is fucked and it starts with Woody, and always has.

Just because you are promoting someone doesnt make them a shlub - the best GM in the NFL last year (Trent Baalke - former scout for the Jets no less) was newly promoted from a player personnel VP role - was he a shlub just because he wasnt already an established GM?

Sure normally teams like to clean house but the two things dont always go hand in hand and its unrealistic to think that the Jets couldnt get an upgrade over Tanny without that automatically leading to Rex's firing

Seriously what offensive or defensive coordinator has looked even decent to replace him. I'd love to hear names and not the same old ex-coaches who were all fired or pushed out we see on TV

We need a new GM way more than we need a new head coach.

My favorite part is how we are 2-1 and in first place, yet the attitudes are so negative towards Rex and Tanny, people are prematurely assuming we are going 5-11. We lose Revis, and without giving the Jets a chance to play a few weeks without him, "experts" instantly declare their season over.

I feel the same way about this team, as Maclin does about the Eagles.
