Exactly. You can bet James Walker and Rich Cimini of ESPN are practically jizzing themselves thinking about the snarky ways to put down the Jets.
I could think of a couple scenarios.. A. He & rex truly are tied at the hip but he desperately wants out of NY & wants to take Rex w/ him. He whispers a few things to the media..gets rex fired & they're drawing up 46 defenses in Buffalo by August. B. All rumors point to Woody wanting some level of familarity/stability when he makes front office/CS changes. Is it so far fetched that Woody decides he has to ditch Rex but wants to sustain the defense first philosophy & promotes Pettine?
It makes no sense...if Pettine did this, which HC would want him as a DC next year. How can you trust a guy that just betrayed a "close" friend. This is complete BS
Or C. Rex said something in passing that wasn't meant to be taken literally, and the same thing happened with Pettine and Manish, and the story was rushed to print.
Apparently, according to Cimini, Rex was crying when he told his guys about the article. Most likely out of anger. I wouldn't be surprised if Manish Mehta never wrote an article about the Jets again. If Pettine is indeed the source, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually were unemployed come Monday.
If Rex finds out it was Pettine...he should be fired NOW...come Monday he is a FA. I just can't see how it was Pettine because he would essentially be black listed from being a HC or DC in the NFL. Who would hire a guy that sells his boss down the river?
Next month Pettine will be in high demand. dont be suprised if he ends up with whomever takes the job in buffalo.
I'm not sure why anyone would take Mike Francessa's speculation about the Jets seriously after all the shit he's spewed about this franchise.
Because as much as Fatcessa hates the Jets this is not the type of accusation you go on the air with unless you have some solid evidence. Assuming it is not true it could be a career killer for Mike as large as he is. Rule #1 of journalism is you don't name names unless you are sure....especially in sports jounalism.
This is exactly what I believe to have happened. Either way, the credibility of these "beat writers" is non-existent.
I dunno, the source isn't going to suddenly reveal himself and prove Francessa wrong. And he doesn't have any more bridges to burn with the organization that already hates him. Seems to me there's almost no risk to lying here.
I don't like Mike, I think he is an arrogant jackass but one thing I don't think he would do is to create a story and name names unless he knew for sure it was Pettine. It's not about burning bridges with the Jets, it's about ethics which I do believe as much as he hates the Jets he has. If it ever got out that he fabricated Pettine it would be over for him. Mike knows it, he has an ego but he's not stupid. He's a multimillionare for a reason and he isn't going to risk his career nor his reputation amongst his peers by making up a bs story.

They were probably using Petite to leak things to the media, and now in typical Jets fashion they are throwing him under the bus. Would anyone be surprised if Rex was using Petite to leak negative things about players he disliked to take the heat off the coaching staff and manipulate public opinion about who should be on the roster, but then decided to throw Petite under the bus when Petite decided to leave? It will be interesting to hear Petite's side of things. EDIT: You then could assume the negative stories about Sanchez last season were purposely leaked. Maybe Rex wanted a different QB (Manning), and all he got was Tebow? Total speculation..
He didn't fabricate them....he just embellished a few emotional rants from Rex into an official Rex statement/feeling/desire. Happens all the time. Ever say "I'm gonna quit this f****** unless I get so-and-so ??"
