Yup, that sounds accurate. Who couldn't picture Rex saying "If Woody doesn't spend the money to fix this offense, I'd be better off getting fired". It wouldn't be a hard thing to picture him saying to Pettine after one of Sanchez's turnovers, or some inept playcalling by Sporano. I would imagine that Pettine wasn't too happy with Rex taking away his playcalling duties this year, nor the inept offense, since he was a dark horse candidate for a head coaching job last year. Remember his comment about the defense having to pitch shutouts? He can't be happy. From Rotoworld: Jets DC Mike Pettine has reportedly turned down a contract extension. Pettine is a coaching free agent in 2013. He reportedly drew interest for head coaching jobs a year ago, though he wasn't a "hot candidate." It's doubtful that Pettine would have a realistic shot to run his own team after the disappointing season in New York.
Correct me if Im wrong but aren't Rex Pettine and Dennis Thurman all real good friends. I remember reading after 09 that before every week they all go out to dinner and talk Defense. Rex brought them both in because they are friends. I wouldn't be surprised to see Thurman take over as DC when Pettine leaves.
If that's the case (and Francesa said he had people working in the Jet organization admit this) then why this pos wasn't fired ages ago is beyond reprehensible. Andy Reid fired his buddy DC for far less than what Pettine did, and Pettine being Manish's leak makes a lot of sense considering Manish was the one who randomly came out with the 'story' of Pettine rejecting an extension - four months ago. And it was also inexcusable for Mehta not to print Rex's denial.
They knew something was wrong if Pettine was ALREADY slapped for leaking stuff and had his phones monitored. I don't understand how 'chronic leaking' isn't insubordination and grounds for dismissal?
Or just being too loyal to people, as Trevor Pryce wrote: http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/...yan-gets-in-the-way-of-coach-ryan/?ref=sports "Even with someone as polarizing as the former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, whose relationship with Ryan eventually grew contentious, Ryan’s first choice would have been to work it out. They parted on mutual terms because the last thing Ryan was going to do was fire a guy he believed in. No matter what."
No one has accused Schotty of leaking anything to the press. It's one thing to have internal contention, it's another to cause a major rift by leaking information to the press. Especially from someone who is so vital to the whole operation. It could be that it's Rex's loyalty that makes him so blind on these matters... if he even is.
That could be the case... the old if you tell a lie so many times you start to believe it. Denial is one hell of reason to be blind to something. It's not a vliad reason but it is certainly something that could explain Rex being blind as a bat and not having a "pulse" on the lockerroom.
Mike turned down his contract months ago, supposedly in August and it was reported once the Jets missed a playoff spot? What a coincidence
Last tweet is disturbing. Who has the final say of who says what to the media? Does that run past HC And GM and go straight to the owner?
This is one the stupidest tweets I have ever seen. So Bassett is claiming that his calls were monitored with a particular cell phone given to him by the Jets. Why wouldn't he just call from HOME if he wanted to leak information - the Jets are not BIG BROTHER and bugged his house. This is on top of the fact that the franchise offered him an extension in the summer. This all is such BS guys. Seriously, hook-line-sinker...
All of these stories and leaks are sanctioned by the team. The team on the field is a buzz kill, they need this to create buzz.
Yeah in the SUMMER they offered him an extension. Before all these destructive stories this year where he's supposed to have had a hand in after turning down said extension and having his job responsibilities lessened. Explain how this is hook-line-sinker, hook-line-sinker for what? You think Pettine's a fall guy? If he's not leaking stuff, who is? Francesa for whatever we may think of him is not making this up, and when he pressed Schwartz in his interview he more or less confirmed it was common knowledge too.
I have a really good theory about this. I bet it is Pettine, but because Rex is such good friends with him they didnt want to fire him because he would probably never get a job again (who would want to work with someone who leaks bad information like this to the media?). So instead they create this phony story where Petine "turns down" a contract. They're basically firing him without firing him, kind of like how they got rid of Schotty.
Because Rex gets credit for the defense and our DC doesn't. Also, I wouldn't mind them firing Rex and promoting Pettine to HC with Norv as our OC.
