If we trade him, the trading partner can restructure the contract, and also take on the signing bonus hit. The Jets could mandate this in a trade as well. The most likely scenario is that discussions are taking place between other teams and Revis's agent, and Revis will sign a new contract, extend his contract, or agree in principle to a future contract. The Jets would mandate that Revis payoff the difference in his signing bonus, and the new contract would offer a large signing bonus, or option bonus. JMO.
I'm watching the next few days with bated breath. A Cro trade before his bonus is due really helps fix the Jets cap problems for the season and gives them great flexibility in terms of making offers to people like LaRon Landry. I could see Cro getting traded just to clear cap room.
I am all for trading Cro, but I don't feel a 2nd is enough given his play last year as our #1. IMO, I feel this is best case scenario, and we could just as easily restructure his contract to easy the hit this year. Revis, even injured and a 1 year rental gives us more value. IMO.
I wouldn't be surprised at almost anything the Jets got back for Cro at this point. The cap space is a huge part of the deal here. It frees the Jets up to make some other decisions, like Landry, Revis and Sanchez, that are just out of bounds at this point given only $8M to play with. It's possible the Jets find a great deal for Cro out there with people evaluating him as better than the FA CB's available. It's also possible that the Jets wind up taking what they can get because they need the space and they're rebuilding at this point.
In a normal year, in which most of the Jets big contracts were not guaranteed, Cro is probably a cap casualty already to recoup the $8.25M in cap space that cutting him in a non-guaranteed contract would have created. In that light almost anything the Jets can get for him is a plus. Think about it. It's not that the Jets want to cut a talent like Antonio Cromartie but in a normal year he's one of the guys who would have gone in the purge. So would Santonio Holmes. Whatever the Jets cap situation was from 2009 to 2012 it's really, really bad right now.
I don't see how extending Mark Sanchez has anything to do with getting us to a SB. That is the fly in my ointment. Resigning Holmes, who was cut after being a SB MVP, was pretty dumb too. They could have gotten someone just as good or better for the money.
Geez, this is another terrible post. First of all the Jets are not in cap hell next year under current contracts. It is bad right now but clears up quickly. That is a huge qualifier on what to do. What to do now is to get under the cap for 13 without decimating the roster. It is also a very bad idea to get rid of Cro. That scenario without a deal in place keeping Revis could mean the Jets start the season with Kyle Wilson as their #1 cb. Yikes, what a horrifying thought. Even if the intent is to keep Revis, trading Cro before a deal were to be reached with Revis would give Revis tremendous leverage. Otherwise the Jets will be facing that Kyle Wilson horror. I think the Jets will find some other way to get under the cap than in trading Cro.
I can't agree with this. A player that can play up to his perceived value is worth keeping, unless you get adequate compensation. The Jets have more options with Cromartie than they have with Revis. $10 Million is a fair number for a #1 CB IMO, and they could restructure that down. Revis's camp is looking for $16 million according to unsubstantiated sources, and is worth more in trade value. Of course this assumes we are only keeping 1 of the 2, and Revis signs a new contract.
The Jets have the following starting positions to fill at this point: QB (unless it's Sanchez) TE FB or H-back LG RG RT (Howard is an RFA atm) LOLB ROLB SS FS That's 10 slots to fill with $8M in cap space. If they trade Cromartie they have 11 slots to fill with $16M in cap space. They also have $4-5M in rookie contracts to sign which hopefully will fill a few of the starting slots above. The math just doesn't work for them right now and if they want to make a serious offer for LaRon Landry it really doesn't work.
We have $8 Million in cap space, and $3 Million to work with after the reserve for Draft picks. Paycuts: Santonio Holmes from $11 Million to $7.5 Million $3.5 Million Mark Sanchez from $8.25 Million to $5 Million $3.25 Million Restructures: Antonio Cromartie is offered $6 Million dollar signing bonus lowering his cap hit to $7.75 Million in 2013 $3 Million David Harris 2 year $12 Million extension Turning some of his salary into an $8 Million signing bonus saving $6 Million (of course if you plan on keeping him past 2014, his contract year). My point is there are other options than getting rid of a good value asset. Again, if you sign Revis, and trade Cro you are that much further ahead, but at what cost?
