I love that he is doing this because we havent had a top 5 defense since he handed off play calling dutys to Petine. This is his strong suit this is what he is good at and we will be a much better defense with him calling the plays. Thurman is a rookie playcaller and i wouldnt trust him and obviously Rex doesnt either.Like he says in the article this will leave the offense completley in Marty Ms hands and that could only be a good thing
Mehta: Rex Ryan Will Be Calling Defensive Plays Next Season http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/jets/rex-back-reins-jets-defense-article-1.1293504 Some parts that I want to point out:
Nothing wrong with that. Rex could field the entire defense from St Peters Prep or Don Bosco and still probably not come in dead last in NFL defenses.
If theres one thing rex can do right, its calling the defense. anybody that says otherwise isn't paying attention.
I like it! Some believe Rex's job may be on the line this year.....he has alot of starters not returning, lost 1 pro bowler and they may trade another, but he still has the confidence he can get the job done.....and so do I! Nothing against DT, I like him and think he will be a very good coordinator, but I want Rex doing things his way. If he ends up being fired then so be it......but just like in Bball when its all on the line you want your best player taking the last shot and you live with the results regardless of the outcome. I hope Rex doesn't take over the play calling at the expense of being a head coach. He needs to stay oversee all aspects of this team. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
This would be true but with a OC like MM, he doesn't really need to oversee the offense. That's what killed us last year. Sparano did not seem to have a grasp on the offensive side of the ball, so Rex was juggling everything trying to fix everything. With MM running the offense, he has tons of trust in him and he can focus his efforts on the defense. This is one reason why MM was such a great hire!
Well, if you're gonna be coaching for your job, you might as well be in control of your fate. I don't blame Ryan one bit for taking over the play calling on defense. I do wonder though what the point was in promoting Thurman. He could have remained in the position he was in and still worked with Rex. We all know Rex is a great DC. If this is his last hurrah in NYC, then why not go out playing to your strength.
so he didn't have anything to do with the offense, AND he didn't call the defensive plays? im beginning to wonder what Rex actually does...
thats the key to all of this, Out of all the starters we lost so far only 1 is a pro bowler Landry, and he became a probowler for the first time as a NY Jet. So for people who act like we lost so many players, answer this question. How many of them will be missed?? Out of all the players we lost besides Landry how many of them will we even notice are gone?my answer 1
You seem to suggest if things go wrong this year Rex will be out, not sure I follow the rational behind this. If we truly are in-rebuild mode then there are very few expectations to be had. Progress has to be forward and if that's what your suggesting then I'd agree. I happen to think that in years to come Rex will be a very good HC and has already come a long way in his short HC career. He's made monumental cock-ups along the way but has overcome them and I think, come out a better person and HC because of it. I think that RR calling the D is an excellent idea and this could also help out MM. First year OC with us and he hasn't got Rex breathing down his neck. So far I'm liking what I'm seeing from the CS and FO and hope that we can keep our staff in place even when there are wobbles.
Im beginning to think that the Shotty fire was a bad move. Look what happend to Sanchez when he left. He got better every year until dickhead Sparano walked threw the door. I think MartyM can restore Sanchez i really do and im counting on it to
Regardless if Rex is doing all his work calling plays for the defense, his ass should be sitting in on offensive meetings, because if he doesn't he won't know a damn thing going on out there on the offensive side of the ball
I like Rex a lot. If the Jets don't extend his contract prior to the season starting he is absolutely coaching for his job. edit: Never mind - when I posted this I thought his contract was only good through 2013.
Rex needs to stop playing defensive coordinator & get his ass more involved in the offense. Two years in a row that offense sucked & everybody blamed the OC & celebrated when he left. This is the third straight season with a new OC, he needs to make sure the offense doesn't shit the bed yet again.
the problem with this is rex knows dick about running an offense. MM should be able to handle it. he is a REAL oc. not a line coach and not a schottenheimer.
If he knows dick about offense and can't pick it up after 5 seasons of head coaching then he needs to be fired when this season ends. What's gonna happen if the offense does well & then the OC leaves to be HC somewhere? Jets can't just sit around hoping Rex will always have a solid OC to bail him out because he just doesn't get it. MM being able to handle it is not good enough for Rex to not be involved on the offensive side of the ball. I like Rex & want him to succeed but the free passes on offense need to stop. He needs to take accountability for shit offenses. The buck should be stopping at the HC not the OC.
Anyone familiar with the team, knows that Rex has been calling plays on defense since he came to the team. 2011 was the only year he gave control to Pettine for the most part. DCs aren't just there for calling plays on defense. They do a LOT more than that. Rex calling plays, doesn't mean Thurman does nothing and sits around all day.
