Hey. I'm going to try to do this every week. I like to think I throw out some good ideas, but we'll see. 1 - Chad Pennington played flawlessly. His downfield passes were crisp and perfectly accurate, while his shorter throws were, as usual, brilliant. 2 - The offensive line showed promise. They pass protected very well, other than a few breakdowns in the 2nd half. They didn't run block particularly well, but I think some of that has to do with Blaylock, who is just awful. He's the least aggressive runner I've ever seen start an NFL game, in all seriousness. Barlow needs to start, he showed me far more aggressiveness and ability. 3 - Coles is a beast, and it's a pleasure to watch him play with Chad. They have such chemistry. 4 - I actually think our receiving corps looked a lot better than I thought it would be (which was atrocious.) Coles is a great fit with Chad, Cotchery is potentially a very good starter and McCareins, although I'm still not in love with him, made some nice plays today and everyone can agree is a solid #3. This is not to mention Chris Baker, who is a good blocker and showed his pass-catching potential today as well. And what about Brad Smith? Under Herm, this guy never would've gotten an opportunity, but with Shottenheimer running the O, the gadget plays will come out. 5 - The defense looked solid for the most part. The D-line rotated a lot of guys in and out very well and looked pretty good (especially the new guys, Moore, Hamilton and that big white guy (forgive my ignorance.) 8 - LB corps is excellent. Vilma and Barton were their usual selves. Hobson is a bit slow, but is definitely improving. Bryan Thomas had a solid game as well, but I'm still waiting for a breakout game from him. the pass rush on the whole was pretty bad. not much pressure, other than on blitzes, which I thought were very well timed by sutton and mangini. 9 - The secondary has a few holes and has no depth whatsoever. At safety I like Coleman and Rhodes' play. Hard hitters, both, and generally sound. At corner, though, Dyson is the only guy who's completely consistent. What great picks he made. Miller, while oozing with potential, is erratic and misses tackles. Barrett is erratic and well, and just isn't that great. Strait was awful today. One play he was so out of position he didnt have a chance to make the tackle. 10 - I don't know what to say about Nugent other than I'm not worried. 11 - Ben Graham is the best punter the Jets have had since, I guess, Tom Tupa? 12 - Mangini and the coaches couldn't have impressed me more. The team was poised, the plays were well called, and although I loved Herm, this is giong to be a much tighter ship.
i think chad audibled into that play that he fumbled on. the rb seemed to screw the protection, but that was probably a bad place to audible. i was happy with the game in general. guess i was most worried that when we dropped 8 in coverage, some guys were wide ass open and nugent made me sick
I would also like to add to our below average rushing performance... According to Mangini in his post-game press conference, Tennessee has been one of the top defensive teams as far as stopping the run the last few years... So it wasn't all poor run blocking and bad running by blaylock, it also had to do with the defense we faced.
The Jets played a great game. I was/am a little worried concerning the running game but its a situation none of us expected and plain and simple is when we needed it, it was there at the end. I think I can see the Jets becoming more of a passing team anyway not abandoning the run but not as much as when Martin was back there. D'brick is better at pass protection then run blocking (his block on the Brad Smith play wasn't the greatest). I think Nugent single handedly changed this came and swayed momentum to Tennesse. Without those miss field goals I honestly feel the we'd be talking about the Jets 30-0 or 30-7 route of the Titans.
Most valuable observation was that although the jets won a very well played game, its still the Titans. Pat's come to town next week and thats where the true colors will prevail. But I really don't want to be that guy; the one who spoils the victory party..Good win for the Jets, enjoy the moment in the sun
Good observations. They won the game. Kicker sucked. Run game sucked but they were flexible enough to go to a short passing game.
Nice observations. I too am very concerned with the secondary. Barrett, Strait and Miller did not impress me today. Especially Miller, I'm holding out hope that he finally "gets it", but he is very inconsistent and his tackling skills are suspect. Not to mention he keeps getting himself involved with these skirmishes and such that are going to lead to more penalties. I have faith in Mangini and Brown, but an area that I suspected to be a strength of this team could potentially be a big hole...
Maybe so, but the problem was the run blocking wasn't good enough against the good run stopping Tennessee defense.
I love Mangini, but I'd like to criticise him a bit here. The game was almost flawlessly called. When Tennessee was making their comeback, the Jets ran(which is the correct call for the most part) to try to kill the clock, but the team was just unable to get a first down on the ground. They got a little conservative and should have continued to pass the ball where Tennessee had no chance of stopping us. Since we came out with the win, it doesn't even matter.
Biggest difference, Coaching and a healthy CHad. I can see why Brees had such success in San Diego, Schott runs a very similar O to what they did there. He showed flexibility, and the ability to deviate from the gameplan and go with what was working, he did not force feed the ball in any aspect of the game. Mangini had these guys mentally prepared, they did not fold and looked concise in their decision making. The Jets should be fun to watch this year, and the future looks bright.
I think it's just a matter of time before Drew Coleman displaces Miller in the rotation. Coleman seems more like a coachable, grounded player.
maybe this is what he's thinking when hes doing that bullshit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rar6MO9ybC0
Total plays: Jets 69 Titans 69 Look at the numbers under Edwards: 2001- Jets 928, opponents 1030 2002- Jets 917, opponents 1008 2003- Jets 936, opponents 1032 2004- Jets 996, opponents 966 2005- Jets 907, opponents 1047 That was always something I hated with the Edwards teams. They had a lot of trouble getting off the field on defense and then not sustaining drives on offense. They still made the playoffs three of those seasons. But you would prefer to run more plays from scrimmage than your opponents.
a few comments on your guys comments i agree completely on miller. lot of potential, but really missed a couple of important tackles, particularly on one play where the tight end made him miss?? Disagree on Barrett. Think he plays the best man on man defense. Strait i thought played well, but still appeared a bit lost in coverage/zone. The jets offense vs. opposing offenses(total plays): I really noticed yesterday that when the jets got on the field, there were very few(if any) 3 and outs. So important. The Jets offense stayed on the field allowing the defense to regroup. Can only hope that continues. Didn't look at time of possession, but imagine the jets won that statistical category?
I agree with most everything you said except I think our DL still wasn't too strong against the run and if the Titans didn't start Kerry Collins as the QB we might have been in trouble. The D did well overall but still the same holes I've seen year after year with getting off the field and bending too much. That being said it's week 1 and a new scheme so overall I think with the talent we have this unit will only get better.
Miller really pissed me off on a couple of plays where he was way out of position and his man got upfield after the catch for a 1st down. It's one thing to get out of position ballhawking and trying to pick the ball off. It's quite another thing to not be within reach of the ball OR your man as he is catching it and getting 7 yards after the catch. I had Miller and Cotchery as my two important step up to the plate guys this year. I'm hoping miller comes around and I go two for two but I'm having my doubts after his confusion yesterday.
