From Rich Cimini in today's Daily News Article: "A false-start penalty on guard Brandon Moore pushed the Jets back to the 12. Instead of shifting into Herm Edwards mode - settling for the field goal - rookie coordinator Brian Schottenheimer went to the air and Pennington zipped a pass so accurate that it could've hit a mosquito from 25 paces. Touchdown, Baker, with 2:10 left." That's the mentality "You play to Win the Game" that Herm spoke, but didn't live by. After his kicker missed two FG's and one XP - would you expect your coach to stay conservative and try and win with a FG, or would you want a guy who attacks and instead of laying blame, goes for it? Like I said, this reminds me very much of the first year under Parcells in many ways - but in some ways, it's even better.
I think this is an excellent Post. I really saw the difference with the coaching staff on Sunday. Herm would have TOTALLY played for the field goal... Listen, Nugent had a bad day. We all have. Mangini knew it and played for the TD. Thats why he is a SO MUCH better Herman. WAY TO GO JETS!!!!!! After the players start winning...just watch how much they respect and listen to Mangini.
And what about all this talk of Coles not buying into Mangini? I think 8 catches for 153 yds says differently.
True. Good post. We still have some kinks to work out; even over Nugent. It was distrubing how we let Tenn come down the field and get into a TD position at the end of the game. This time our blunders didn't cost us. Next week, they will...............next week, blunders will equal loss against BB. I do think Mangini will preach this all week. Nugent is in for a tough week of practice.
There was alot what could be considered the same sold jets in that game. The only differnece is the old jets loose that one. We finally have someone with enough balls to go for it and win the game.
Fellas... need your opinion. When the score was 13-0 and we had the ball on the goal line where it was 4th down and maybe 14" to go, would you have gone for that TD? We settled for the FG to widen the gap to 16-0, but the way Barlow had run the ball on the 3rd down, it looked to me like we had a pretty good chance at punching it in. Don't get me wrong, when we made the FG and made it 16-0, I was glad to have the extra points on the board, but do you think we were being a bit conservative to not have gone for it then? I looked at it like, well maybe Schotty was giving Nugent a chance to shake off the missed PAT. Just your thoughts on this...
That was my thinking as soon as Nugent came on the field. The move was as much psychological as anything.
Absolutley not. Benigno was just talking about this and said he was disappointed that Mangini went for the FG. But we had no running game. And when you have no running game, you're chances of getting it into the endzone on 4th down are very slim at best. It was the smart decision to go for the 3 pts. What needed to happen was for the jackass kicker to do his damn job on those other opportunities.
I think when you are up 13-0 and some time has passed in the game, you don't have to take risks, you just keep putting the points on the board, which is what Mangini did, unfortunately, Nugent couldn't put the points up there and a blowout became a nailbiter.
well said- I was thinking the same thing. The old Jets would have lost that game! Now don't get me wrong...I do think we will struggle agaianst better teams but we are rebuilding. Yesterday was a great win for us...it set the stage for us that we can, indeed win. How cool was that Penny to Coles bomb late in q4. MAN...I think my neighbors 5 houses down heard me screaming. What an athlete!!!! Pennington is back. Give the guy props. I feel great knowing the Mangini is working on the things that went poorly for us yesterday. I am very confident in him. I have a feeling Herman focused on the positives. Lets be positive now. Mangini is driving and he has done a good job with this club. Oh yeah..and what about those Draft picks... Mangold, Ferguson and Brad Smith all had great games.
And newly-acquired Andre Dyson had a great game too. Give credit to our coaches and FO for making some nice changes since last year.
This is a great point. At the time of the 4th down on the goal line, I was hoping he'd go for it, thinking that the worst case scenario is you have an inept Collins on his one goal line, but if Nugent makes the other kicks in addition to that one, the game is out of reach and the decision to take the 3 there is a good one.
I guess I don't have a huge problem with going for the FG to make it 16-0. The Titans would have to score two TDs and two 2-point conversion just to tie, which is what happened. Had we gone for the TD and not made it, then we could have been trailing 14-13, which changes the environment during that last drive. Also, without Kendall in the game, not sure Mangini/Schott felt as confident about short yardage. I mean, we relied on Brad Smith to get us the 1st down on the last drive through somewhat of a gimmick play. It's one game, I grant you. And the Titans aren't as good as KC was in last year's opener. But you can just see how better prepared the team was out of the gate this year. We're still no better than a 6-8 win team this year, but the foundation looks sturdier. Also, I like how the D was disguising coverage by sending the LBs and DBs to the line before snaps in the final drive. Hadn't seen that before. While it didn't prevent the Titans from driving, it's thinking outside the box a bit.
You know, I totally forgot Kendall was out by then. That might have affected the call and you're absolutely right. They probably felt, "let's just take the points for now" and let the O-line settle down and get used to not having Pete in there.
If you can make the lead 16 points - you do it! That means the opponent (barring 2 two point conversions) needs three scores to take the lead. Mangini is thinking - always thinking out there. I see a big difference, win or lose, in the mental aspect of this team. Sure they have a long way to go, but under this coach I BELIEVE we might one day get there. After week one under Herm I thought we'd never win with him as coach.
Right on my friend. Also, I like the Parcells like scowls that Mangini gives to players that make stupid mistakes. Instead of the pat on the back, "go gettim next time" crap that Edwards doled out, Mangini will hold you accountable. I love it when I see him writing things on his notepad. No nonsense here, and thats why we're going to really be successful down the road.
Herm has dreadful opener I know this is in another thread - maybe the two should be merged, but I can't help myself... "By JASON WHITLOCK The Kansas City Star Let the record show that Chiefs fans booed coach Herm Edwards on Kansas City?s second offensive possession of the 2006 season. On third and 5 at the Cincinnati 11, Edwards? offensive unit slammed running back Larry Johnson into the heart of the Bengals? defense for the fifth straight time. Bengals middle linebacker Brian Simmons stoned Johnson at the line of scrimmage, forcing the Chiefs to settle for a field goal. A massive flock of boo birds took flight inside Arrowhead Stadium, spelling out just how short Edwards? honeymoon period will be in Kansas City. Edwards didn?t even get to unpack his bags. The conservative, play-for-three-points reputation he built in New York has Chiefs fans ready to pounce. The punchless offensive attack that contributed to the Chiefs? disappointing 23-10 loss to the Bengals will certainly have Kansas City football fans openly questioning Edwards? competence. We haven?t seen a debut this bad since the maker of the Titanic shouted, ?full steam ahead.?
They're finding out sooner than I thought. Next, he'll have to break out the poisened kool aid speech, to keep from losing his players. "...don't believe what the media are saying men, don't believe it....go blow your heart out!"
That notebook cracks me up, I would give $100 just to peek in it for 5 minutes. Probably something like... I hate kickers. Parcells said Ryan can catch. Justin Miller, ugh. Shit, Chad can throw more than 20 yards. I gotta try one of those new McDonalds snack wraps.
