Agreed. Was brought in to be the pulse of the defense attitude & leadership wise. Almost every coach brings in one of his former soldiers to establish precedence. Scott was a very solid ILB. Above average at run fills, blitzing & tackling. He was lousy in pass coverage but so are most 34 Ilbs. He was definitely overpaid but sometimes you have to overpay to sway pieces to your organization. Scott was a Baltimore guy in the prime of his career. Playing for Rex was a big factor but so was $. You take the good w/ the bad when it comes to free agency.
I have to agree Keyshawn Johnson, for a guy that was picked first overall was never the superstar , the Jets though they had when they drafted him.
Personally I think J-Co was underrated and it's hard to see him sitting towards the end of Pittsburgh's WR depth chart. While not a true number 1, he was still steady as hell and made big plays when we really needed him, especially against NE.... the 2006 playoff game he had that 75 yrd TD early on before game got out of hand, the 08 Thursday Night game in Foxboro with that ridiculous catch where the DB interfered, the 2010 playoff game he made that long yard after catch play in the slot right after NE scored to get within 3, that was HUGE and led to the Holmes TD, etc. I also remember him making countless tough grabs on the sideline against Cinncy in 09 playoff game. Cotch was a very good WR and it was disappointing he was released upon his own request after the Plax signing..... was a key piece to Sanchez's success IMO. Sent from my Galaxy S4 via Tapatalk
Good point that's not brought up often enough. Cotch was the last anchor the Jets had in the WR corps and ever since he walked that part of the squad has been a revolving door and totally in disarray. If Sanchez had Cotch to throw to I have to imagine the offense would have been much better off in 11 and 12. That was a sad day for Jets fans, he was one of my favorites.
I think Cotch was very appreciated by the fanbase, he's one of the few guys I really never saw any complaints about. Everyone loved him. He ASKED for his release after we signed Plax- actually before we signed him. The team let him go at his request.
Lets not forget that sick catch in OT vs. the Browns in '10 limping around with a torn groin muscle. Dude was a warrior.
You can't underrate somebody who was catching 70-80 balls a year in his prime. The problems around Cotch related to staying healthy and generally speaking to not having enough talent around him in the offense. He was a very good #2 bordering on #1 but too often he was used as the #1 with no real #2 opposite him. By the time the Jets got good receivers in opposite him the late prime health issues had started and he was having trouble staying on the field which took a chunk out of each season. He was my favorite Jet for a while there because he left it all on the field and he had a knack for making big plays. Combine that with not being a self-promoting big talker and it was hard not to like him.
See I feel he was underrated because he was catching 70-80 balls a year but was looked at as just a solid to slightly above average WR. While Cotch wasnt flashy or considered a true #1, we was one of those key players that helped hold the offense together, came up clutch in big games numerous times and was reliable as hell. Stats don't show a player like Cotchery's full value to a team IMO. Sent from my Galaxy S4 via Tapatalk
Chrebet made some big catches. He also dropped a ton, A TON, of big passes. I was personally at 3 games where his drops in key situations cost the game. He was mainly a dump off option and 3rd down receiver that wrongly played almost every down. He was not the game changing player that many Jet fans make him out to be.
