Obviously. But still not the same as claiming that head coaches are equal experts on both sides of the ball when their career is on one side or the other.
This is one of Rex's best coaching jobs ever. I wanted to extend him before, now I'm sure of it. The guy is a great coach with limitations in certain areas just like every other coach. But he brings a mentality and a toughness to this team that makes up for the shortcomings. No one coach is perfect in every phase of the game. Hell, week in and week out we see some of the most respected coaches make clock management mistakes or inexplicably challenge obvious calls. Can't have perfection. I'll take Rex WITH his flaws. _
Besides a few posters, most fans understand that. But assembling a competent coaching staff is part of the responsibilities of a HC. Dungy, Cowher, BB and Walsh have done that. I am starting to think that Rex is no longer being loyal but doing everything he can to put the Jets in the best situation. A lot of his decisions are based on that this year.
Rex deserves an extension. Considering that this is a team with limited talent at the skill positions, he's done an excellent job. And he just flat out knows defense. With a good OC he can be a hell of a coach. Best pickup this offseason has been Mornhinweg
Of course they all need help from their staff. Let me put it this way: it took five years as a head coach for Rex to hire a competent OC. If MM leaves, will he make an equally good hire? Remains to be seen.
They took a lot out of his hands this year. That's why we kept hearing the "collective decision" statements.. I think the hiring of Morningweg, the playing of Geno Smith (the playing of Sanchez in 4th quarter that led to his injury), the toning down of his smack talk, etc. all came from Idzik and other team leadership.. so far it has helped. Even decisions like not retaining Pouha, Bart Scott and Eric Smith came from the top and were necessary. With Rex's loyalty - does anyone think that he'd be playing Harrison, Davis and Allen instead of those guys right now? Not a chance. Those were Rex guys and he gets too invested in his guys. I'm not saying Rex should be fired or not receive an extension, I'm just saying he doesn't deserve all the credit he's getting for the way this team has looked this year. The organization has done a better job recognizing his weaknesses and putting a check and balance on his decision making. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they won't extend him after this season. I bet they finish 8-8 ish, go out and get some WRs or TEs in the offseason to improve the offense and let Rex coach for his job next year without excuses. He may or may not deliver....
No way they are letting Rex coach with his contract expiring at the end of the season without an extension. That would be a bad move. They don't need to extend him this year but if they want him to coach next year he needs an extension.
Honestly, If BB never lucked into Tom Brady, I doubt you'd be saying that. Plus the alleged defensive mastermind that is BB, had one of the worst D's in the league for quite a few years. Tom Brady is what keeps that team moving, even as thin as they are. Hell, I could probably run a decent offense with Tom Brady at the helm. I always think to the Saints or Greenbay. They have been dominating their divisions for the most part in recent years. It's definitely not because they have a coach that knows all aspects of the game. It's because they have Top 5 QBs. I do honestly believe that given another year or so RR + MM can dominate. They are a great 1-2 punch. The defense is already close to that level, and once we get the right pieces and restore our team depth I think the O will be really good. I mean yeah, you want a HC that is somewhat competent in all 3 phases of the game, but it's not critical if you have a good OC or DC to cover your "deficiencies," aside from being a leader and motivator. I don't think that's even close to what's keeping us behind NE all these years. It's Tom Brady and the Jets lack of depth and playmakers on offense. I firmly believe that this will change with Idzik, and after next year's draft we'll be pretty stocked with youth and will still be able to sign a playmaker or 2.
Give him an extension IMO continuity is so important Not to mention he is a good coach In the beginning I actually hated his bravado. I felt like he was setting himself up for major failure and criticism. (Which happened) Now, after the failures, I actually like and respect his contribution more than in 2009/10
Definitely agree. The defense is close to being dominant, and the offense will only get better next year (especially as Geno Smith gets to learn more from his 2013 game tape.) Plus, Tom Brady is only getting older.
I think the long term extension has already been offered, accepted, signed sealed and delivered. Won't be announced until the season is done. Rex will be the HC of the NYJ for five more seasons starting with 2015
I have a feeling this is true also. I think Woody and Idzik were iffy coming into this season. I think they knew he was given a shitty ass roster in previous years and that they just wanted him to do "average" this year. Now that we are 5-4 and in the hunt for the playoffs having beat New England, New Orleans, and Atlanta, I have a feeling they offered him a deal, just won't announce it to the end of the season. If we make the playoffs, he should win coach of the year, but if we don't, we can all agree that Rex has already far exceeded anyone's expectations for this year.
Rex deserves an extension. Coming into this year, many predicted 5 wins at best. Having already done this, and beating NO, and NE to boot, it would only seem natural to keep Rex.
Let him get the extension at the end of the year, assuming the Jets don't go in the tank the last two months. I'd rather just wait and give it to him then and let the players be hungry to play for it if they want to get him extended so bad. Not like Rex can go anywhere at the end of the season anyway.
They went 11 and 5 with Cassel as the QB. BB is without a doubt one of the best defensive minds in NFL history. He has been either the Defensive coordinator or HC on 6 SB winning teams. I don't think it's a coincidence that in 09 and last week both Shottenheimer and MM were put on ice to run a Rex Ryan inspired O. I think this is decidedly a good thing when looking at Rex Ryan going forward. The Jets under Rex Ryan are not going to win a SB with a pass happy west coast o. They will win with a great D and a dominating ground game that wins field position and TOP. You couple that with a competent QB and the Jets may well have themselves a great HC. Matching or mismatching an OC and DC with a HC isn't a formula for winning. It's the HC having a vision for the team. What makes BB great is he's flexibility over the years. He has won with all kinds of different teams consistently based on the hand he's dealt. It's why he is a HOF coach. Plus he had the opponents plays.
If we make the playoffs Rex will be extended. Nobody expected us to be 5-4 at the bye week. Our second half of the season is pretty tame, we should get 10-11 wins.
I think he deserves an extension even if we flame out at 7-9. This roster is fucking devoid of talent. This coaching staff is literally making chicken soup out of chicken shit.
