For the sake of "SIGN THE BEAST (QB edition"), as of today the Bears plan on starting Cutler again. Pretty foolish on their part, but with a move like that, it appears they could be wanting to stick with him going forward. Would you want McCown to get a look by the Jets?
Sign Schaub if possible and draft another QB. Keep Simms to compete for 3rd/4th QB spot. No Quinns, McCowns, Fitzharvards, Vicks, Smiths (as in Alex), or anyone else that isn't a proven hi-level QB (e.g. Schaub, Rivers, Romo). Not that I like the idea of either of these three QBs, but they are the best of the possible "tossed aside" QBs.
I'd take my chances on McCown over Schaub. Then again, whoever is in at QB of us needs the support casting of receivers. But still, no thanks on Schaub.
we wouldn't be signing him to be our QB for the next decade, he's be a vet to push Geno. I'd be ok with this.
As a starter moving forward? Probably not considering he will be 35 years old. Unfortunately for McCown he's really shined and showed what he is capable of but at to late and age. Would def be a good move bringing him in as a back up.
I would say right now, the Bears have the second best receiving corps. You think McCown will have the same success throwing to Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, and Jeff Cumberland that he's having with Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, and Martellus Bennett? He'll be expensive and the Jets simply don't have the roster to make the price tag worth it.
he won't be expensive and won't be expected to play as well as he has in Chi w/ those weapons. he will be a relatively cheap backup.
Absolutely would take him and give him a similar contract with maybe a little more pay like what Campbell got from the Browns....a 2 year deal and tell McCown its open competition this training camp. McCown probably won't take the deal if we draft a QB high though and nor should he if he wants any shot to be a starting QB for our team. Been preaching this choir for 2 weeks now to get a veteran QB ala McCown over a high drafted rookie .
We just need a professional backup who has started games of late which Garrard doesn't bring. McCown easily fits the billing.
so we should sign a 35 year old for one or two seasons of backup level play instead of draft a qb who might have franchise potential. yea, that makes no sense.
I like the idea of schaub better. He isn't a perfect QB & does get the interception bug..but he has also proven that he can effectively put up points on offense. Let him come in & compete w/ Geno. Sam Bradford is another possibility via trade. Rams have Skins #1 pick which is currently in top 5. Are they sold on Mr. Bradford under a different coaching regime than the one that drafted him? Or do they draft a potential franchise QB & get value for Sam?
You don't think between the Texans, Jaguars, Raiders, Rams, Vikings, Browns, Titans, and Jets all needing a quarterback or backup his asking price won't go up?
worth a look? absolutely, weigh your options and if he's the best available give him a one year deal. I don;t see how anybody could be pissed with something like that. hes a QB in his mid thirties thats barely started he won't be asking for big money this offseason.
his value is as a cheap yet productive QB thats done well in a pinch despite his age and history, a guy thats good to bring in if you want to have an alternative to a younger player or a solid backup. in a league where there are plenty of other alternatives that can provide exactly what he can his price won't exceed a certain amount. seriously if he thinks he can out price his journeyman competition and still get a job he's got another thing coming.
Schaub isn't any more a proven "high quality" or "high level" QB than McCown is. Schaub will want big money and expect to start. It would in effect be the same thing as signing Cutler. It would mean that the Jets have given up on Geno as their QB of the future, and would be the worst thing they could do imo. They definitely need to sign a veteran QB, but it only needs to be someone like Shaun Hill, Josh McCown, or Orton. They need a solid veteran QB who can start if Geno (or a rookie they draft) isn't ready to start, or to serve as a solid backup if the starter goes down with injury.
Yeah. The idea with signing a vet, is that he would be a short term insurance policy, NOT the long term answer at QB.
