i just finished watching the game tape of last summers exhib games----jets vs jags ----and jets vs giants
simms had good % and yardage----greg buttle -ian eagle and the two nuts who did the giant game were saying good stuff about matt and also the wr ryan spadola------hard to believe jets let him go----now he is on the dolphs

i don't know how he is in practice but based on the two exhib games he deserves a bigger shot this year

The fact that he's in the league IS his "shot". Not everybody can be a starter. And if it weren't for McElroy getting hurt, he probably doesn't even make the team. Plus I would've preferred McElroy in the role Simms played last season.

Simms has the physical tools to be an NFL QB. I don't believe McElroy did. I'm not so sure McElroy was ahead of Simms last preseason before getting injured. I seem to remember Simms was taking more of the 3rd team snaps prior to that.

For all the Sanchez fans that claim Sanchez won the starting job based on what they saw in preseason. Simms was the best Jets QB in preseason But we all know starters don't play with the 3rd string. So there's that.

Matt was able to play himself from 4th string to backup and actually played in regulation games. The thing is he is not probably going to get a chance. Over the Sanchez reign other Qbs out played him in training camp but never got a sniff when the regular season started. And Rex was committed to Mark until the end of 2012 when he should have benched him a lot earlier. If Matt had played much last season and been given a start he might have been better than Geno. And given reps and playing time improved. But who knows. Same in 2012 for Timmy. When you throw exactly eight passes for the entire season and your enemies say you can't throw how do they know if you never got a chance. These are the same jerks who called Chad noodlearm. Boy wouldn't we like to have him back.

McElroy is smart, accurate and has some decent mobility. Plus I noticed that his arm strength had improved. He's a guy that I feel could run your offense. I remember hearing that Simms had the strongest arm of the 4 QB's. But he was behind McElroy on the depth chart. McElroy getting hurt in the first preseason game opened up an opportunity for Simms.

McElroy was the 3rd QB in week 1 of preseason. That sbnation article isn't the most credible source.

That's a better source but McElroy was the 3rd string QB by week 1 of the preseason.

The point is that it was probably a close race. Your initial comment sounded like McElroy was obviously going to win that spot until he was injured.

I'm not so sure about that.

McElroy looked pretty damn good in that game. IMO I think Greg was the better QB. You may be right, it was probably close. But IMO if Greg stays healthy he's probably the opening day backup QB with Simms as the number 3.

Simms and McElroy will never be more than backups in the NFL and they aren't even very good backups. Wake up to the facts.

Any sports caster that pimps Matt Sims does so because they work with his father. What are they supposed to say? "Man! my co-anchor's son REALLY sucks!!!". You might as well be talking to his mother.

Now, that being said, Matt may be a really good QB, but you'll have to trust your own eyes as well as the Jets staff who see him play every day in practice. I really liked Matt's moxy.....he has no fear and a gun for an arm. Yes, I'd love for Matt to become the next Tom Brady, but he's the 10th Jet backup QB I've wished that upon. So far I'm 0-10.

Simms wasn't bad in the pre season against 3rd stringers, sure. He hasn't really done much when given the opportunity in a live regular season game. I know you can say he didn't get the reps, but I'm sure he'll get a chance to prove himself in training camp.

I'm definitely not down on Simms, I like the kid and hope he does well. He just still has to prove himself. I feel he's a little over rated by some people based on his dad and preseason play.

Simms is simply not very good. He was an average college QB at best. I'm not saying he's not talented but he's not going to get a shot to be the starter, it least not here, I hope.

Simms best chance is going to be waiting for someone to get injured, step in, and really wow everyone in that one opportunity he gets. He's never going to be handed the keys to the car. JMO.

Anything could happen though. I just don't think he's all that good.

And what exactly brings you to that opinion?

I think he's got some talent at the position. Strong arm, quick release, and more than decent accuracy.

He should have been given an equal opportunity to compete for the job, if he was he would have been the starter last year, geno Blows and IS NOT the answer.

As QB prospects come and go, Matt Simms probably is on par with any good 1st rounder. That would have stayed that way if he stayed in good program and progressed like we all hope he could have. He was actually a top-rated QB prospect coming out of highschool at one time.

Instead, he took a photo with a pot in his hand - and played 1 game in 2 seasons while at Louisville because of that. And there was a Lane Kiffin disaster while at Tennessee, even though that's not a fault on him. He ended up at El Camino for a reason.

If he can learn WCO and run the offense well, then why the hell not? I just worry that he is beyond full-blown stupid. [That's Geno's level.] I mean, I blast Geno for being stupid all the time, but he didn't take his photo with a pot in his hand even before he got to his college. What does that say about Matt?
