You could cut him after two and only have a $2.6 million dead money hit. http://overthecap.com/cap.php?Name=Andre Johnson&Position=WR&Team=Texans
Double yikes. With numbers like that I can see him getting cut if no team steps up. And if that happens.....
A fair amount of that money is guaranteed in one way or another. That's the only thing that is going to make a low value trade work for the Texans. Teams aren't going to be in wait-and-see mode on a possible cut. The Texans probably give up $20M in cash over the next few years if they do that plus the cap hit. It's just not clear there's any team that is willing to take on the contract at any price in draft pick compensation. It's a new NFL. 33 year old stars are no longer guaranteed to draw interest at their price when they move. Johnson's best deal right now is probably the one he is playing under.
Agreed. Except he knows he's not going to see next year's salary. He's hoping someone out there will give him a guaranteed two-year deal. The problem with that is he's asking at the wrong time now that everyone's spent their money and made picks to fill needs at WR. I think he stays in Houston and retires next season as the market will only offer him a little above minimum next year and he'll probably refuse.
I really disagree with you about him retiring next year. The dude had over 1,400 yards last season- and barring injury, he's going to put up another 1,000+ yard season this year. He's at the tail end of his career, but he's still one of the most productive wideouts in the game. I don't see why he would only get offers in the vet minimum range next year.
Not with so much uncertainty at the QB position. Johnson is still really good but I he's getting older and bringing him in could really hinder the development of the guys we drafted and Stephen Hill (who i'm still holding out hope that he can breakout). They have the cap space to do it and you certainly cant say that its a bad move but I just don't think its the right move at this point. They just gave Decker a lot of money, I don't know if it's wise to tie up to much money in that area of the team.
I don't think he'd come to the Jets if he has to face Revis at least twice a year. He'd have to scratch those two games right off his Yards Total for the season.
With Geno growing up in Miami I am sure Andre Johnson is familiar with him and that might just be something that tips the scale in the Jets favor....
Really? You do realize there are over 5 million people in the metro Miami area and they are also 10 years apart in age. What are you figuring, he comes to the Jets for $4M less a year since Geno grew up in Miami?
If the Jets got Peyton, we wouldn't be division favorites!! That said, I really like Andre Johnson. Would be willing if price was like a 4th round pick.
He'll get offers in the $5-6M a year range from teams wanting to add an affordable good receiver to the mix. If he was on the market right now with no encumbrances he might get 3 years and $30M with the back end of the deal completely avoidable by the signing team if they wanted to dump him. Maybe $15M guaranteed overall in the deal. Next year he's a year older and he's maybe going to get 2 years for $12M.
That's good logic. I'm just making a guess based on his age. His numbers are still real good. We'll see what happens.
It depends where/if he gets traded. On the Texans he had an average of 11.3 targets per game last yr (181 total). That's not going to happen on another team.
It's being reported that the Jets have no interest in Andre Johnson which makes sense to me. I want to see what we have and possibly develop that second WR position. I feel okay with Nelson as he has good chemistry with Geno and we can see if Hill will ever pan out while giving time to Shaq. None of this would happen if Johnson arrived.
