In addition to all of the very good reasons already listed that this is a stupid idea, the clock stops with change of possesion anyway, so the Jets would have to run a play to be able to run 40 seconds off the clock.
Are you serious? #1 they stopped the Jets earlier... #2 that's a horrible idea! You don't take away points bro...Ever.
There was 2:20 left. So if the Jets stop at the one, and then down it, it runs to the 2 minute warning. If they then score, there is 1:56 to go or so, so you gain 24 seconds for a huge risk. Down it on 2nd down and now, it' sdown to 1:20, sure, BUT you have 1 chance to score a TD from about the 3... Not kicking that FG hurt us. If the Jets would have done THIS, it would have shown 0 confidence in the D, and would have killed their confidence for the season.
Yeah, in the end, it all goes back to that 4th & Goal INT. It's one thing to be 'ballsy,' but it's almost a guarantee that if you're going to take say 5 risks in a game, at least one will fail. Well, it failed. I had a terrible feeling in my stomach when they went for it. But hey, it's done with, and it's time to figure out how the hell we're going to give JAX their 3rd loss in a row, not to mention at their house.
Were you at the game? I respect your knowledge, but you are wrong here. The bonehead play by Washington resulting in starting the drive at the 3 is what handcuffed the Jets, not the play calling. On first down, Pennington was in his end zone and almost got sacked. The Colts were not giving the Jets anything long. And the big difference between the Jets and the Colts is that the Colts can rush the passer and the Jets can't.
The INT portion of it hurt more than people think. I know, it was 4th down, and it really didn't matter.. but I believe it did. Going for it was the wrong move, no question, but if we go for it and throw an incomplete, they have the ball on the 2. Would they have scored? Maybe, but it's much harder to drive from the 2 than the 20.
I understand the reasoning behind it, but if you were to do that, and tell Miller to stop you'd be saying several things. A) It's guaranteed he runs for a touchdown. B) It's guaranteed Manning is going to pick you apart in a perfect two minute drill. That says to your defense, that you don't believe in them, and also puts the risk of a fumble on the goal line, even if it seems inevitable. Clever idea for a video game, but you simply can't do that when you have six points in your grasps. I wasn't totally against going for it on the 3. You have the best team in the NFL on the ropes of the goal line. I didn't like the playcall at all, I said before the play they should've ran it. My uncle suggested a bootleg, but right before it was snapped, I knew Indianapolis had too much speed for a Chad Pennington bootleg. A big goal line set, run off tackle would've either gotten in, or left them within the three yard line.
Even if Miller did stop at the one and the Jets ran the clock down to, say 45 seconds left, and scored a TD, Indy still would have came back and scored on the Jets' swiss cheese prevent. Chad didn't have a prayer on the last drive. Especially after the Jets wasted their second time out so Indy could set up an offensive play on Indy's previous game winning drive.
We were discussing this on the car ride home, I dont think you can do it, it just isnt something you can do while playing...get the points and hope like hell the defense can stop them....THAT IS THEIR JOB
That's as crazy as the thought I had. I was in the bar watching. After the Miller TD, knowing the way we hadn't been able to hold teams from driving late in games (pretty much every game) and Manning's ability, I told somebody, I wonder if we're better off letting them score a quick TD. You almost knew Manning was going to be able to drive the ball down the field, and I was worried that we wouldn't have enough time on the clock after that drive. I was confident that with enough time, we'd be able to at least move into FG position for the tie. Manning left us with enough time, but starting inside our own five was disasterous.
my girlfriend asked the same question, shouldnt he just stop and waste time...no, never...if you have the opportunity to score, you score...you did your part and it is a team game, now someone else needs to make a play...the defense did not show up
Think it from the perspective of Justin Miller. You just got a QUESTIONABLE call against you, which lead to a TD. Then against Leons will ran out of the endzone, hit a small gap, dragged like 2 guys, threw them off, and your clear for a TD, would you want to just stop at the 1?
