Rex is the least professional coach we have ever had. And yes, I go back far enough to " Richie from Brooklyn"
I think teams always need a coach who is firm, consistent, even tough. I think they will always do better with that. Just as long as he is not a prick.
Just think. They would make MM the head coach. He would go for it 4th and 3 on his own side of the 50 in the 2nd quarter. Lee would be the make believe offensive coordinator. And Dennis Thurman would get to call his first defense as defensive coordinator. Not a pretty picture. But....what the hell. I'm with you!
There's definitely a bigger problem with the coaching staff and that will be addressed in time. I don't think anyone really thinks the issue in this instance starts and ends with Vick, however, wheres the personal integrity and professionalism?? How about holding yourself accountable? He should've been prepared to play a football game because he's an NFL player - regardless of what was going on around him. I think they should cut him. Maybe a respected locker room veteran like Vick getting held accountable would send a message to the rest of the team. But - you are right the staff has problems too and that's why they won't punish Vick.
Michael Vick wasting everyone's time just like Idzik, Rex and Geno. At this point I am rooting for us to lose every game. Even if they somehow manage to win on Sunday and Geno looks like he has a pulse, I am done getting sucked into the Jets illusion. Vick should have been cut yesterday, but if he does happen to play this Sunday, hopefully Mangold and Brick miss a few a blocks.
You mean name guys that aren't really leaders "captain" to try to boost their confidence only to have it backfire because "surprise" they aren't really leaders?
IMO, a lot of this goes back to Club Rex where all the players are HOF bound and the coach will cover for you and never call you out. That being said, you have to wonder how much of Vick's attitude towards this team stems from John Idzik.... Remember, when Vick was brought in, the first story was that he was supposed to "mentor" Geno. I wonder how much of that was influenced by MM. Now we'll never know what was promised or what wasn't when Vick signed, but when Big John stepped in and said "every" position was going to be competitive, that was a not so subtle signal to Vick that perhaps he had a chance at starting here. Now as we all know, What Big John said about "competition" before and during TC was complete and total bullshit. How do you think Vick took that? Hell, the first time he came out in public and said its Geno's job, Rex and his handler Big John forced him to backtrack on that statement. God forbid the truth comes out and exposes Big John as a fraud and a liar. So, Vick towed the company line but as the summer wore on and the practice reps were counted, the lie was exposed and Vick knew then that no matter what he did, he wasn't ever gonna be given a chance to start. It didn't even come down to how badly Geno plays as he is protected by Big John via his draft status. What choices did that leave Vick? The obvious one was to shut up, play the role of mentor and cash those checks. For a 1 year rental, standing on the sidelines with an occasional chat with Geno for a million bucks sounds like a helluva deal to me too. Shit, who on the board wouldn't have taken the money. They turned Mick Vick into Mark Brunnell before our very eyes. Well, the house of cards came a'crashin down last Sunday and all those reps Vick didn't get to take with the first team bit the Jets squarely in the ass. You can blame Vick all you want but the Jets (Big John) never had any intentions of Vick playing so Vick figured he could just coast and pretend to give a shit about a team that didn't give a shit about him. Rex has no choice and no say in this because Club Rex has been exposed not just by Vick, but by another well respected veteran on his vaunted unit. DD said the jets weren't practicing all that hard and although I'm sure he was pressured to backtrack, to his credit, DD has stuck to his statement. This is an indictment of Club Rex if there ever was one. For you few Rexaholics still out there, I have to ask this: If Vick really was going to be anything other than Brunell II, why didn't Vick get any reps with the first team? Why should Vick have assumed anything different last Sunday since nothing had changed in practice and he was working with the scout team still? Yeah, Vick got caught not taking the game seriously enough, but Big John and Rex share the blame for all the lies and bullshit they tried to pass off as real "competition" over the summer. I'm no mind reader but it had to have disillusioned Vick to the point that he's already making plans to jet outta here in 2015. I would if it were me. And to think we almost got the circus out of town...
Imo if there is one assistant coach I would be fine with firing it would be Lee. I have seen no evidence of any contribution by him, and I do believe it would be his responsibility to track how much the #2 Qb has been doing.
I think that is accurate, this recent news confirms it. But I would hardly say the CS and FO have done anything to make Vick think he had any real shot at playing significant time with the team.
Exactly. This news reflects poorly on Vick, but I can sort of understand how he feels about the Jets.
The sad part is that this isn't Vick's first apology. He made the same apology to former Falcons coach Jim Mora Jr on national TV after getting out of prison. Vick had one season in Philly where he gave a shit about preparation, the rest of his career he's just done the bare minimum and it's showed.
Agree with other posters - extremely disappointing bordering on shocking. Cut him now and bring up Simms
I take your point about honesty, but I have to disagree overall. This is a millionaire getting paid more millions to be prepared. The fact that he wasn't is utterly unacceptable. He should be cut today. There are too many excuses in today's society. It's always somebody else's fault that a player completely disrespected his team and teammates. Vick means nothing for the future of the Jets and it is now clear he means nothing for the present either. Roll with Geno and bring Simms up as backup. Forget the money, that's lost anyway. At least the organisation can claw back a tiny shred of its dignity by kicking his sorry ass out.
Vicks checked out mentally, the same way he checked out in Philly on multiple occasions. Doesnt get much better either because Geno is the same way.....
If they cut him he gets his salary for the entire season plus it makes no sense. There is a good chance he'll be playing this season. But first you need a game plan.
You'd think that, but on the other hand, these guys are grown men. Maybe they know when their overmatched coaching staff is setting them up to fail. If it happens often enough you have to expect less then optimal effort from a decent portion of them.
Without reading anything besides the headline of this thread, this is another huge red flag on Rex. So now you've had Demario Davis and Michael Vick both saying they weren't prepared or they didn't practice hard enough. That falls directly at the feet of the HC. Regardless if Rex doesn't know the simplest offensive formations, the HC needs to be accountable for the preparation of his team. I also love how Rex got very defensive when Demario made that practice comment last week. Because Rex knows if people start questioning his practices and their preparation that he's got no shot at coming back next year.
I would bring up Simms no doubt as a message to Vick, but he's gonna get paid anyway. Plus how do you cut him when you don't even bench Smith? Lack of accountability has been a problem under Ryan long before this Vick thing came out.
