here is the excerpt in SI: http://www.si.com/nfl/2014/10/15/bill-parcells-excerpt-bill-belichick-new-york-jets I appreciate what BP did but that man cost us Peyton, Belichick and Brady. Very frustrating to look back at that time.
If he didn't want Parcells over his shoulder he shouldn't have came here in the first place. Oh- that's right no one wanted him after the disaster in Cleveland and Parcells did his friend a favor. If he didn't want Parcells over his shoulder he shouldn't have made a promise to a dying Leon Hess and collect the massive bonus they gave him in exchange for his word. Oh- that's right he is a lying POS. but no lets blame Parcells on this one...
what GM ever makes that kind of guarantee? A college kid, his daddy and his agent demanding that an organization take them no matter what other offers may come that way? I'd give them the NY finger too...
Manning was considered a sure thing, he had an option to return. he wanted BP to assure him if he came out he'd go to the Jets. BP wouldn't do it foolishly b/c he didn't think he could win big soon enough while developing a young QB.
Parcells couldn't take Peyton Manning in 1997. He was coming into a 4-26 situation from 1995 and 1996 and he had a mandate from a dying Leon Hess to win a Super Bowl by 1999. That was the job. There was no other job. Taking a rookie QB in 1997 would have failed the requirements of the job he was asked to do.
Many people forget - when the Jets were negotiating to hire Parcells, they named Belichick head coach. It was never clear if BB knew that the Jets were really after Parcells, and after they hired him Belichick was demoted to D-coordinator, one assumes with his ok. But I always felt he harbored resentment about the way things unfolded and that played a part in his (in)famous "Resigns as HC of the NYJ".
oh so it was best to go w/ Neil O'Donnell and Glenn Foley. Parcells wasn't a dummy, he knew he had a ton of talent on the team and was inheriting the #1 pick. he could have won w/ a rookie Manning and by year 2 Peyton could have given us close to what Vinny gave us. Parcells failed is w/ regard to that.
BB knew the plan all along. he was going to be "HC" until they could get BP then after BP retired he was going to be elevated to HC. It was a douchebag move the way he left but it worked out for him.
two things - 1) fuck Weis as well. That's his side of the story. Of course he's going to back Belichick up. He bailed on this organization too. I'm supposed to believe his argument based on hearsay when he backstabbed this organization too? 2) Belichick was in NO position to ever have true authority anyway. 90% of the coaches in this league work under a general manager/team president. He had the opportunity of a lifetime in that his boss would've been his close friend and mentor. Yet, he's demanding more power? His freakin mentor gives him a true handout and offers him a job after a disaster in Cleveland and yet he has the gall to not want to work under him? Fuck you Belichick. It was less about wanting to not work under Parcells anyway. It was less about the Jets ownership situation too. Those are bullshit excuses he uses to justify his asshole actions... It was about Kraft and Belichick's ego. Kraft was tampering all along with the Jets regarding Belichick. No coach in Belichick's position would have the balls to want player personnel privileges unless he knew he had an owner on the side that would give it to him. Kraft was in his ear all along and Belichick had just enough ego and lack of personal integrity that he stuck it to his friend and former organization.
