Preach brother!! Totally agree. I said in another thread that this past draft was so full of quality talent at WR that even a blind squirrel should have been able to find a nut! Pryor had better turn into the second coming of Ed Reed or we may be regretting this one for a long time.
This is BS ("a lot of teams missed"). There are at least a dozen very good rookie WRs making NFL contributions this year. Going into the draft, there were likely less than a dozen teams (the Jets being near the top of the list) who had a "real need" at WR. Teams like the Giants, Panthers, Eagles, Bills filled their needs. Teams like the Broncos, Bengals, Lions, Pats didn't have an interest in drafting WRs. Other teams like Saints, Cardinals were without a need but still saw value. I agree that we have multiple threads on this topic. But it is absolute garbage to cite that 31 other teams also "missed" on landing a good rookie WR.
OP is being silly. The object of the draft isn't to identify and select talented players at positions of need like Benjamin and Matthews; it's to get value, regardless of need or scouting, based on random draft position numbering of that particular draft class, in a vacuum. At least, that's what John Idzik and his slurpers like BradwaySux tell me.......
The GM has final say, but his decision is shaped by the opinion of a group of scouts. A guy like Idzik without an extensive personnel evaluation background probably relies even more on his staff's recommendations. Idzik needs a better right-hand-man, whomever that is.
could've traded up and nabbed him. certainly a better option than pryor and mcdougle. a 1st and 3rd might've done it
Or we could hire a guy who actually knows how to evaluate personnel, and not some accountant who coached DBs for a low level college team 20 years ago.
Idzik also didn't draft Brady, Manning, Brees, Rogers, or Luck, how does he still have a job right now? I don't even get it.
My question is this: does a new GM turn over his scouting department in one year or does he cherry pick his way to a new outfit? Because of the late hire Idzik could do nothing for his first draft. He changed a few guys before this current drafting season. Is that the normal procedure in the NFL, or do new brooms sweep clean immediately?
Do we want a GM who really knows college personnel (are there a lot of them out there? who are available, I mean) or a GM who knows guys who know college personnel and can hire them? A lot of guys who are positively aces on personnel can not fill ANY of the other requirements to be a good GM?
Lousy point. We picked Amaro and Pryor, BECAUSE we needed those players. Cumberland wasn't cutting it. Get the fuck over it man,....1st/2nd round positions, especially safeties, should be judged in just 1 season...give us a break.
The Jalen Saunders pick was a killer. Made even worse by the Shaq Evans injury and Enunwa, whatever it was that's kept him from playing. Was it an injury, or an assault charge? Regardless, Saunders was/is too small, and a waste of a pick. Thought so at the time. To take all those guys and get zero out of it really hurt. Amaro was a good pick. Pryor could still be. Dozier could blossom. Whatever. I blame him more for his FA additions or lack thereof, than his drafts. We haven't good injury luck with these drafted guys.
