Chan Gailey was a BAD head coach.. Chan Gailey is a GENIUS Offensive Coordinator. And for those who were dead set on Quinn, what makes him better than Bowles? Because he has a stud Defense? Is it really his defense? Pete Carrol is a defensive guy and has a good hold on his D. Kind of like Rex.. Does being surrounded by greatness really make you great? At least Bowles' D was all his. I think Bowles will bring leadership and right this sinking ship.. And as for Mac? He's a FOOTBALL guy bringing in FOOTBALL people..Just getcha popcorn ready, boys and girls!
Not sure how anyone can have a definitive opinion right now. I hate the Gailey hire, but it is what it is. Let's see where we are in 350 days and we will go from there. However, to the point about Casserly hiring people he knows. No shit - welcome to the real world. If Wolf was running the show, his son would be gm and someone from his past would be coach. It is what it is, especially in an environment like the NFL where there are a finite amount of qualified people for 32 jobs of each variety...
No, I don't have it all figured out, and I am not suggesting any conspiracy theories either. It's all probably much simpler than that. All the high-end candidates who were on people's radar turned the Jets down. So they had to find someone under the radar, which is a lot of work if you want to do it properly. These consultant types, they often don't want to do that kind of heavy lifting, I mean we are talking about a couple of guys who are old, got cushy gigs, and no long term vested interest in the team (and one of them has a spotty record even in his best times). Much easier to just stick with guys you know from your past who aren't necessarily bad or anything, but might not be the best candidate for the job if you actually did the work. This way saves you time AND gets your friends a nice gig. And if it doesn't drastically improve the team, so what? Not like anyone thought the Jets were winning Superbowls soon anyway. I am just saying, be honest with yourself here, if you hired some guys to find you good people, and they came back with a list where every guy was their friend, what would you think about that? To me it seems a bit fishy. I don't have a problem with him getting consultants, it's more the results that I have some questions about. Rex had an even better secondary in 09-10 with Revis and Cromartie in their primes, and he still ran a sophisticated as all hell defense. It's more about the coach's philosophy than defensive talent. Arizona had some serious talent on defense too. There was a great article on the sidebar yesterday about how in 85, Buddy Ryan, Rex's old man, was also running a complicated as hell defense, and finally the players made Mike Singletary talk to him, in order to simplify it. He did simplify it quite a bit after that, and the Chicago Bears went on to win the Superbowl. I think with the Ryans, it's an ego thing, they want to play great defense based on great play calling and coaching, not on players' talent.
1. Yes, I was certainly skeptical of how much power Casserly held over the entire process. However, the man is a very well respected Football guy, and that is exactly what we have lacked in our decision making process in the past. I am not sure why it is surprising that a respected Football guy who has ties to many other respected Football guys is going to hire guys he "likes". Casserly, although he made some questionable decisions in the past is still regarded as a guy who knows his stuff. His reputation is at stake with these placements, so I think that he is hiring who he thinks will shed positive light on him. He might not have a monetary interest in the Jets outside of a consultant fee, but he has staked his reputation of the men he recommended for these jobs. 2. Maccagnan's calling card is his tireless work when it comes to scouting. As a Jets fan, seeing as we have NOT scouting well for a long time now this makes me happy. He wants to re-vamp the entire scouting department, bring in a whole new team of talent evaluators (No more Bradway). In this case: change is exactly what the doctor ordered. Maybe I am being very overzealous here, but I like the sound of someone else in the scouting office besides Bradway. Not that he didn't have some hits over his long tenure with the Jets. One of our biggest failings as an organization over its history is our trouble drafting, indentifying and developing offensive talent. 3. The Jets already have the right defensive personnel (save our lovely defensive backfield) to run the Todd Bowles scheme. This is good for us because it saves having to clean house on one side of the ball. I like Quinn too, but I think it was too risky for us to wait around for him with the Denver job opening up. Quinn is the top new coaching candidate, so it would be dumb for the Jets to wait for him while the other good candidates disappear only to be spurned by him in the end.
There is a very important difference between the new hires and the coaching staff that was fired. The new guys have not done anything to piss us off yet. After our descent into misery last year we get a clean slate.
A lot of people thought Del Rio deserved another job after Jacksonville. He didnt do a bad job there. There weren't a lot of big names out there if thats what you mean but there were plenty of candidates to choose from. Teams identify the guys they like and then go after them hoping to find the next great coach.
Huh? Del Rio was a horrendous head coach in Jacksonville. Awful game manager and overrated defensive coach.
Okay. You want to just repeat the same nonsense over and over without addressing the points I made. Either you and Dr. V have no real experience using consultants or you've been using the wrong ones. End of story.
I disagree with this assessment. Del Rio I think will be a successful HC in Oakland. If Carr develops along a reasonable arc, and they can put together the basics on the rest of the roster, give them two or three seasons and he should be able to turn that franchise around. It looks like a good combination.
I understand a degree of skepticism due to Woody's previous cluelessness, but these look to be excellent hires. Wolff was very involved in the process and he's one of the best GMs in the history of the NFL. McCagnan's name was mentioned as a possible GM prospect 2 years ago for the Jets' GM job when Idzik was hired. I remember his name being on a list of likely candidates. Which former GM do you think the team should have hired? You keep whining, but have offered nothing yourself to solidify your position. Former GMs are all either retired or were awful. Great GMs don't quit young or aren't fired. What re-tread HC would you have hired? Gruden? Cowher? Gibbs? I liked Quinn too, but there was a chance he wouldn't have taken the job, and Bowles and the other top candidates would have already been hired (as would the top assistants & position coaches). Then where would we have been? I'm sick of the blitzing, too, but I think Bowles deserves a chance.
I've been very critical of Rex Ryan's constant blitzing. That said, a 3-4 defense usually does blitz more frequently. But it doesn't mean that Bowles will blitz as much as Ryan or with the secondary as much as Ryan did. I'd be fine with blitzing the LBs and playing zone behind that with a dime package. And, hopefully, Bowles won't blitz on 3rd and long...;-)
Blitzing works great when you actually have players in your secondary. Without Revis and Cro it didn't work too good all of a sudden.
Its not hte blitzing that was bad. It was the predictable, stubborn refusal to change leading to failure after asfter on big third downs that was bad.
How do you know what Bowles' offensive acumen is? By reading Wikipedia? Cro was on NFL Network last night and had praise for Bowles' ability to diagnose offenses, better than any coach he's been around. How many head coaches have experience coaching both sides of the ball for any meaningful length of time? He may not know how to build an offense but that's why you have an OC. What does Sean Payton or Mike McCarthy know about building defenses? Jets defense gave up fewer yards per game but probably graded out worse than Arizona's in most other measurables (including, you know, points). No way in hell anyone who watched us this year would believe we had the 6th best defense in the league. Bottom line, no one on this board knows jack shit about how good or bad these guys will be.
