That has yet to be determined - here is where I got the information. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2015/1/15/7553763/schefter-gene-smith-might-take-on-advisory-role
oh okay. I thought when they canned him as GM they made him a consultant. Maybe he got promoted since then?
Wow, this guy seems awful at his job. At least we will know who to blame if the Jets reach for some scrub at 6...
LOL all this hire your buddy in the NFL no matter how unqualified is laughable, the Jaguars GM are you kidding me? The team is total garbage, and what kind of GM hires another GM because he isn't confident in his abilities? Why no just hire a safe experienced pick for GM and HC? I don't get any of these hirings at all.
i have got a bad feeling about this but we'll hang low and keep the trap shut.....and check back in 3 years.
Gene Smith is terrible. He would be the Terry Bradway but much worse of this regime basically. At least keep Casserly around for the draft over this guy.
Isn't it entirely possible that if you were going to rebuild a scouting department you'd want another person you respect with all of their contacts in an advisory function? Two sets of Rolodexes are better than one.
eh - these football guys always hire their friends, who cares. It's like a country club - once you are in you don't have to worry about being a fuck up because you are always in. I'm not worried about Maccagnan hiring him. Maybe he's just returning a favor, maybe he's helping a friend who needs a job, maybe he just wants him there so he has someone to vent to in the office, who the fuck cares. The only difference between a guy like Gene Smith and other butt buddies that he may hire is that Smith is a bigger name and as a former top guy has something average joes can pick apart on a resume. Scouts & shit are wrong just as much as he was but they can hide it, not being the top decision maker. Mac probably is going to hire a bunch of them too... and who knows, maybe Smith is better suited for this role than he was as a GM anyway. It's the american way to get yourself promoted enough until you are one too many steps above your abilities.
Before we jump off a ledge. What is the role? This is kind of vague. He might have nothing to do with talent evaluation and more be the cap manager in which case IDC what he thinks about players.
From what I've been hearing about this schmuck, if he was hired to clean the toilets he'd leave shit stains in the bowl. Fuck him. Bad to even be considering such a buffoon.
So you don't think it's possible that he was very good at his job prior to being promoted to GM? Isn't that usually what gets people promoted?
I believe that incompetence is a universal quality similar to intelligence. I would therefore posit that his incompetence wasn't noticed for some reason in any job it appeared as though he was successful in. I guess that puts me against the "peter principle". I explain the peter principle in terms of cognitive overload instead of incompetence but I have not considered it deeply. That is, I guess I am saying that the peter principle is valid as things become more cognitively complex, but incompetence is a judgmental quality independent of complexity. What do you think?
I don't think the issue is simply talent evaluation. He apparently used factors to predict performance that were unreasonable such as his wife is really nice. Why would you expect him to judge anything accurately if he confuses cause and effect?
