Hi all, new to the forum with all the excitement these last 2 days. I usually don't follow offseason moves too closely but this new GM is aggressive and he seems to be going for it which I like. Anyway I wanted to post a possible defense that I had in mind and wanted to hear your guys thoughts on it. For an obvious passing situation, say 3rd and 7, what do you think about rushing 3 and having 8 DB's on the field. You have Revis guarding the top WR, then you can double the WR 2 and WR 3. Then you can stick Cromartie 1 on 1 against the 4th WR and Skrine against the 5th WR. The last guy can spy the QB incase he runs. I think it would be pretty hard for any of those WR's to get open. What do you guys think?
And this can be adjusted depending on the offense, if they have 3 WR and 1 TE 1 RB you can essentially do the same thing, double the 2nd and 3rd best receivers and stick Cromartie and Skrine 1 on 1 against the 4th and 5th receivers.
I like that you're thinking outside of the box but the issue with that is you over commit to the pass and they'll pick up 7+ yards easily on the ground.
Thats probably true maybe this kind of play would be better suited for 3rd and long where running for a 1st would be unlikely.
This idea is already basically used in prevent defenses, like at the end of halves or when the clock is working to the defenses advantage. I would be very wary about trying something like this with even on a 3rd and 20+ if there is ample time left on the clock. Matching up 3 D-linemen against 5-6 blockers will generate very little pass rush, and even the most slow footed QB will have a ton of time to run around and eventually hit an open guy. You have to remember that what makes a CB really good is their ability to read and predict routes, and then adjust to them physically. It doesn't matter how good the CB is, when a play breaks down and it turns into back yard football an NFL caliber receiver is eventually going to get open. If you surrender your pass rush, you are hanging your cover guys out to dry. I think Bowles pass defense will be very good, but I think that will have a lot more to do with blitzing on third downs.
when you rush only 3, it buys the QB a lot of time, sometimes up to 8 seconds, and no matter how good your corners are, a professional athlete will get open within 8 seconds
can someone please tell me how to stop all the emails i get saying someone posted in the thread i get like 100 a day
We spent $200 million on our secondary the past 3 days. We sure as shit better have an elite secondary.
If we got Fowler we could blitz him and another LB and maybe a safety as well QB would have like 2 seconds tops.
Hmmmm i wont say that this season is one of those seasons where it is superbowl or bust... But with all the money on that secondary i would say it is top 3 passing, and top 10 overall defense or bust
Lol 8 DBs on the field ?that's basically a prevent style of defense that gives the qb all day to throw the ball.It works in certain situations in the game but only then. And there's nothing new about it but normally its 3 Linemen 1 MLB and 7 dbs
I know Bowles has used some 4 Safety Dime and shit like that but 8 DBs is probably too many, linemen will get to the second level and get the 7 on the ground more times than not. From what Ive heard Bowles is multiple just like our last staff so expect similar concepts.
I can't wait to see an all out blitz against an offense with 2-3 receivers. Revis, Cromartie, Skrine, possibly Millner will shut them down.
