NT ---then DE ---> RB And at this point I dont care what order they are in. The best one first off the board.
1(4) I wouldn't of mind trading up for Bush; but I felt that if we stayed where we were, D'Brick was the best pick. The guy is from Long Island; it doesn't get better than that. 1(29) Mangold was another no brainer. 2(35) Call me stupid; but I thought if DE/OLB Kamerion Wimbley made it pass Cleveland, he would drop to this spot. Obviously, I was wrong. Anyway, I thought our 2 best options in terms of value, would be to draft OT Winston Justice or trade down. Being that Justice had some character issues, I'm not surprised Tangini choose the latter. Although Justice was projected as a LT, he played RT throughout college and was dominant both in pass protecting and run blocking. Getting D'Brick, Mangold and Justice, our offensive line would be force to reckon with not just in future years but sometime this season because all were NFL ready. 3(71) Maybe Mangini and Tannebaum stepped out for lunch during this round and Bradway was left in charge. I had QB Charlie Whitehurst pretty much penciled in here; IMO he provided the best value out of all the QBs. If not Whitehurst than Jerious Norwood. I'm still scratching my head about Anthony Schlegel. 3(97) Like I said before I foolishly thought there was a possibility that Wimbley might fall to the 2nd round. DE/OLB Mark Anderson was my back-up plan. I thought he would be drafted somewhere in the 4th or 5th rounds. W/ the loss of Abe and transition to the 3-4, I felt that a DE/OLB hybrid pass rusher was the next major need after the OL and RB. Even though he ended falling to the 5th, I didn't want to take the chance of waiting until Day 2 and have someone snatch him up before we picked in round 4. 4(103) Coming into the draft I loved Brad Smith. However, I didn't know if our FO felt he filled a need. Also, I couldn't really gage where he would or should be drafted since he had Day 1 ability but faced a position change. At the time I was thinking of DT Gabe Watson, OG/OT Joe Toledo or CB/PR Will Blackmon, but was presently surprised when he was picked. Maybe Mangini and Tanny came back from lunch just in time to grab the phone from Bradway to make the pick. 4(117) I thought we should go RB here but I wasn't thinking Leon. To be honest, I wanted RB DonTrell Moore (who is currently out of football); I guess his knee problems were worse than reported. If not Moore than Jerome Harrison. Both Moore and Harrison had more production than Washington and shown the ability to carry the full load college. I felt Washington was more a 3rd down back. Still I had no problems with this pick. 5(138) I kept yelling one name DT Anthony Montgomery!!! After Roderique Wright, I thouth he was the best 3-4 RDE prospect in the draft. Roderique had that shoulder problem, so he would have been my choice. 7(211) As with most of the picks in 2nd day of the draft, it's a crap shoot. Here I liked LB/DE Hybrid Pass Rusher Jason Hunter, who went undrafted but made the Green Bay packers 53 man roster.
I believe Bush's production is a product of the team he is on and what they need from him. If Bush was drafted by the Houston Texans or the NY Jets, he would be used a lot differently than he is being used now. His production would in turn reflect that difference. Trust me is Bush was on the roster, there would not have been a Barlow trade and Curtis Martin haters and worshippers would not be holding hands in unison in prayer for his return.
Wait until the why did we not draft Leinhart posts begin as his star rises & D'Brick just turns out to be another very average player. By far at this time Mangold is lite years ahead of the Brick
And as a center, Mangold makes the calls for the line, but he also gets a lot of help on double teams! Brick is a left tackle that's going to to go up against the best the league has to offer every week. How fair is that comparison?
Again, I was in the camp that wanted to trade down.. But, let's say we did take Lienhart at 4 who would now "learn behind Chad", which could be pretty good... We still get Mangold at 29 and then get Mcniel instead of Clemens... In which case Adrian Jones stays at LT where he was ok and Mcneil gives the line some beef. People were definitely afraid of Brick being too light and Jones failing at RT.
the best pick the jets can make in april is getting brian leonard from rutgers. hes a top notch fb, something we need desperately. askew sucks, i think we can almost all agree on that one. BL can run, catch, block, and just flat out play. adding him to the team will upgrade our backfield immediately.
Only gripe I have with ManI is not taking pope at tight end and tranding down in third 2 get smith or Schlegel...... other then that the way chad is playing right now he could be the QB for the next 3 years. 4 next season it's looking like the jets will not be picking any where near the top 8 this season which is better most expected 6 months ago. So that will probably mean the jets getting the lesser oF that Peterson/Bush/Lych/Irons/Hart crowd. I wouldn't mind suring up the D with a REal Nosie taackle and some real out sideline backes with two o Four 1irst three picks..........
I'm MOST happy with this pick ...Lil Leon is showing dividends and that he was our Herm pick is just plain justice.
