Jacksonville gave all the teams on the Jets schedule the blueprint to beat us. The blueprint is (or was) eliminate our passing game by dropping an extra player into coverage. Jax knew we could not run so they droped an extra player into coverage. The result was interceptions, throw aways, and coverage sacks and a 41-0 loss. Now that the blueprint is available, our defense to this may be Leon Washington. This guy can run and if you don't respect him he has the breakway ability to take it to the house. If Leon continues on his progress and can become a consistent 100 yard gainer, the Jets offense could become very potent indeed.
Excellent points but I was ready to jump all over you...until that last paragraph...lol. Thats the key..pretty incredible that besides the jag game, with no running game, the pass has been pretty available. One wonders if it now can continue to grow with the emergence of Leon Washington. Im still wondering why teams are not looking at game films and seeing the major problems we have in 4th quarters defending the passing game. You just know that some team is going to say "yeah, establishing the run is fun..but lets put the heat on right from the start". I wouldnt be surprised if a weaker team just comes out and throws the ball from the get go.
yea i mean its not just our run d thats bad our whole d is pretty bad and it all is because we arent putting enough pressure on the qb
I dont think our passing defence will be as bad as before after introducing coleman. Miller gave up afew long plays because of overpersuing and poor coverage
Also -- we fell behind very quickly to Jax and then the running game was not an issue b/c we needed to pass to try to come back.
IMO the way to stop the JETS offense is to mount a great pass rush up the middle thus forcing CHAD to move and not set his feet. That is when his weak arm really shows and he throws terribly on the run when he is unable to plant his feet and use his legs to throw! NEON LEON will help but if a QB can not throw, the offense is at a disavantage!
I really haven't looked back at the Jacksonville game, but didn't the Jets use a lot of max protect formations and 2 WR sets? It seemed they didn't really give themselves much of a chance with the pass, in an effort to protect Chad. Plus Coles sat for maybe half of the game. It seems like the offensive gameplan backfired just as much as their defensive gameplan worked. Just saying if we attacked their D similar to how the O had been going at it all year, it might have been different. But again, this is just what I think I remember from the game. Could be wrong.
I think everybody learned from that game, making it a good loss. I think that Shotty learned that if they drop guys back in coverage to do some different things, Im positive they have a gameplan set up just for those situations now, also you bring up a good point with leon, he is going to be our game changer. I think if a team tried to do that to us again we will make them pay, this coaching staff is too smart, and so is chad
Do you even know what you're talking about? Did you watch the Patriots game? Have you watched them this season at all aside from the Jax game?
Jax also jammed our receivers at the line and disrupted timing, which I think is more important than dropping the extra man (which they had to do as a result of jamming at the line).
The blueprint for beating the Jets will be easily executed if we can't find a way to stop the run...by the good teams on our schedule. If you hadn't noticed, there aren't many of those left. New England, Chicago, and the nobodies. If we can't find a way to win the rest of those games, we're in more of a rebuilding mode than we thought. -X-
Good point. I was thinking of mentioning that in the original post. I was not sure if the scheme was a result of good pregame scouting or just in game adjustments. Either way it froze us.
Jax has a big, physical defense. Not many other teams can match up to their size and strength. Second, they had us in a hole early which makes things alot easier for the D. Also, I think our running game will keep improving as our Oline jells and our backs get some experience in the offense. My take on our passing game is a little different than most. I think we passed well early because opponents didnt respect Chad, our receiving corps or our OC. They thought that if they stopped our run that we wouldn't be able to move the ball. Wrong.
Didn't we get a punt blocked for a TD and take some bad penalties, too? I was in an airport following that game on my phone, so it's fuzzy. I think too much changes from game to game to make it that simple, otherwise teams would just keep losing every game. Did the Texans then establish the blueprint on how to beat the Jags? Does this mean we stand no chance vs the Texans later this year? I think not.
We dont really have too many problems in pass coverage... If your supposition was correct, we would always be playing from behind....It's only later in the game, when the DC stops being aggressive, that teams have an opportunity to take advantage....
I agree with you because I felt that game was a bad match up for us from the start. We're still a small, quick team in the trenches and we tend to get manhandled whenever we go against a really BIG Offensive and Defensive line. This is one of the holdovers from the Herm/Bradway era and it's gonna take us a few drafts (and off-seasons) to fix. Hopefully, next season we'll add a massive road grater at Guard and a 400 pound-er at Nose-tackle.
