LOL! Bellicheck was a defensive coach for 12 years before becoming a head coach. He failed. Coached the defensive backs again and then finally got his shot at head coach in New England. I guess defensive minded coaches suck
I do think in his defense the personnel is very overrated on defense. 2009 Revis is not walking through that tunnel
Not true...That's the business in today's NFL. You get 1-2 yrs to show progress then you are shown the door. If We finish 6-10 or 7-9 I think Bowles survives but is on a short leash next year.
Recent Super Bowl winning coaches: Belichick (Defense with brilliant offensive mind as well) Carroll (defense with a very vanilla offense) Under Woody Johnson: Herm 5 years, Mangini 3 years, Rex 6 years. It was a December crash that cost Mangini his job. There is no short leash on Bowles.
Bowles is not going change his approach any time soon. We need to be patient. We're not going anywhere without some better play(ers) at key positions... The coaching staff needs to take a long hard look at themselves as well.
its normally 3 years. not 1 or 2. What you are thinking is the Browns way of thinking and you won't win with that mindset
Did someone really say we have far bigger problems than QB?? Listen I understand that we have some holes and some areas that we need upgrading but when you don't have a QB you don't have far bigger problems.
What I'd like to see is an offensive coordinator that didn't lock us into one system or another with zero creativity. Gaileys answer to every question seems to be 5 wide Marshall sideline, Decker cross, whoever on a go, Ivory up the gut. While it's not as bad as Schotty's 2 yards less than we need funk and dunk and Sprano's derpcat's on 3rd down, it's just as annoying.
You're crazy man, QB is the biggest deficiency on this team and has been for decades. You can not create a winning formula without the main catalyst; a QB that can thread the needle, make the long throws, provide leadership and mentally dismantle a defense. The last part CAN NOT be understated, a cerebral QB is paramount and you will not win without one. This goes beyond simply not making bad decisions. A great QB will instantly recognize 12 men on the field and get a free play out of it, will recognize coverage/blitz schemes, will make mediocre receivers look like all pro players and have the other intangibles that change the dynamics of a team on both sides of the ball so much that it becomes HIS team. A team that does not have this catalyst is at an incredible disadvantage when facing a team that does and has a QB that displays these qualities consistently. Finding this QB should be priority number ONE beyond anything else for the NY Jets.
we lose 4 out of 5 and now we need a new coach. not just a new coach but an "offensive minded" one. yea, sounds about right. that'll fix what ails us.
I hear your frustration. The Jets have hired a series of defensive coaches to be the HC, they've all failed, and you're ready to try something different to see if it will improve things. I understand that type of thinking, and have shared it somewhat. You're letting your frustration cause poor logical reasoning, however. My problem is with the bolded phrases. It's not necessarily true that defensive coordinators don't know how to coach the rest of the team, nor is it necessarily true that offense coaches make better HCs or know how to coach defense and STs. Offensive Coordinators can be just as myopic as Defensive Coordinators. IMO the only problem with continually hiring defensive coaches as the HC is that that side of the team continually has gotten the emphasis with regards to draft picks and FAs, and the offense has been pretty much ignored. We need better offensive players and better balance on the team. The crux or root cause of that issue has not really been the HCs as much as the GMs. We've had three novice GMs in a row who were no good. Only Bradway had extensive experience in scouting and personnel. Tanny was a bean counter and attorney, and Idzik, while he had some scouting experience, had been mainly an administrator. I agree that the team needs a guy who can develop QBs. The thing is, that the guy doesn't have to be the HC. He could be the QB Coach or even the OC. One of the main reasons Gailey was hired is that he had basically run a spread offense and had a track record of getting the best out of QBs. It was thought he would be the perfect guy to help Geno develop. I'm not so sure that the 'days of forging dynasties with running backs and defensive lines making up for otherwise forgettable "game manger" quarterbacks ended in the 1980s.' That's certainly the narrative that one sees on Jets and NFL fan sites and the talking heads prattle on about endlessly. The truth of the matter is, however that there are 32 teams in the NFL and only a small handful of elite QBs. The rest are forced to deal with cheap imitations of the elite QBs and/or game managers. I read a good article in Sports Illustrated this morning at the doctor's office. It was focused on Todd Gurley, and made reference to how he is being compared to A. Peterson, E. Dickerson, and H. Walker. In that article it addressed that very issue. I think it was Eric Dickerson that spoke of the focus on QBs and how the NFL was driving that agenda, yet there's a scarcity of topflight QBs, and that he thinks the pendulum is already swinging back to RBs. To be sure, the Rams are being built on defense and the running game to Jeff Fisher's specifications. The article mention how in the 2013 and 2014 drafts no RBs were taken in the first round for the first time since 1963, but two were taken in the first round this year. There are a number of topflight RBs in college football now that will probably be labeled as "can't miss" prospects when they enter the draft, yet not one QB likely to be labeled as such. I want an elite QB as much as anyone, but trying to win in a way that demands an elite QB when one doesn't have one is a recipe for frustration, if not disaster. The Jets have a top 10 D, and I believe will build a perennially-dominant D, but may have no shot anytime soon at an elite QB. If they build a topflight OL, draft an elite RB, and get a smart QB who doesn't beat himself and who is a fiery leader and competitor, that could be enough to get the Jets to, and win, a SB. Petty is smart, knows how to play the QB position, has an excellent arm, and can make all the throws. Gailey is a guy who can help Petty develop and get the best out of him. If he can learn to make his progressions and read NFL Ds, once Petty learns the offense, he could be good enough to lead the team to a SB victory if the Jets build the OL to protect him and get him an elite RB. Your assertion that "Bowles is already showing that he's not the right guy for this job." is silly and premature, if not downright stupid. It's WAAAAAAAAAAAY too early to come to such a conclusion. Every rookie HC has a learning curve and things they need to learn and work on. How long did Belichick, Chuck Noll, and many other excellent HCs coach before they figured it all out and became excellent HCs? What rookie mistakes did they make? I may be mistaken, but I don't think the great Vince Lombardi was all that great until he went to the Packers, and even then I think it took him a couple of years to build a consistent winner. This roster is far from being a SB-caliber squad. Have you forgotten how awful the team was the past two years? Have you forgotten all the holes? Have you forgotten how the players were not disciplined and held accountable? Rex inherited a talented team that was disciplined and had good veteran leadership. Bowles inherited a team full of holes, that had little depth, that was undisciplined and not used to being held accountable. It takes time to build a roster and to change a culture. It doesn't happen overnight. Just because the Jets got lucky in Rex's first season doesn't mean that Rex was a good, much less great HC, nor does it mean that Bowles isn't competent if the Jets don't make the playoffs in his rookie season. The team's sorry history doesn't mean squat. All the sorry HCs, GMs and owners don't mean squat. That was then, this is now. All the fanbase's frustration, impatience and immaturity don't matter, unless Woody is stupid and caves to it. The reality is that no one is perfect. We all make mistakes and no one starts out great at their job. They have to grow into the job and learn on the job. I'm not saying this is the case with you, but I think the truth of the matter is that many of the Jets fans who are moaning, bitching, calling for Bowles' head (if not Mac's) on this board loved Rex because his arrogant, boastful loud-mouthed personality was entertaining or "fun", and because their personalities are similar. They were willing to overlook his flaws because he was "fun," didn't care what anyone thought of him, and like them. They don't like Bowles because he is not entertaining, is an adult, is different from them, and "boring."
The amount of "I KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS FRANCHISE!" threads have been ridiculous. I feel like there should be an Oompa Loompa singing a song about this fan base right now....
You make some excellent points about the OL, and I respect your opinion, but I think that your statement that there are "far bigger problems" than the QB position is off base. If the fan bases obsesses over the QB position, it's because the NFL, commentators, and the media have been propagating the idea that RBs don't matter any more and that the NFL is a passing league now, and if you don't have a great QB, you can't win. We've been brainwashed to some extent, but by and large, it's true. The QB doesn't have to have a cannon for an arm or be a gunslinger (look at Cutler), but he does have to be cerebral. He has to be able to read NFL Ds. He has to be a good leader. He has to be accurate. He has to know how to and have the ability to extend plays when receivers aren't open. It certainly helps if he is mobile. We DO need greatly improved play from the QB position. Fitz has some of the qualities and characteristics we need, but he still makes too many dumb decision, and he doesn't have enough arm to keep opposing Ds honest. They are able to crowd the box and jump intermediate routes because he can't beat them deep. Peyton Manning has thrived in his career in spite of playing behind average or below average OLs because he is cerebral, reads the Ds and gets the ball out quickly. The problem is that there aren't many QBs like him. Upgrading the OL should be one of the Jets' top off season priorities. I've been saying for two years that the Jets need to find Brick's successor. They need to find a quality RG and upgrade the RT position. They need a two-way TE. They need an elite RB, hopefully one that is a good receiver as well as runner and can score from anywhere on the field. If the Jets will just upgrade the OL significantly and add that RB, I think we'll see a much improved team. If Petty can learn to read NFL Ds and go through his progressions, I think he has a good chance to be the QB we need. He's smart, is a leader, is tough, has a great work ethic, is somewhat mobile, and has a strong, accurate arm. He has many of the qualities that successful NFL QBs have. He doesn't have to be elite, just above average and efficient. Assuming the Jets find a pass-rushing OLB and improve the speed and coverage abilities of their LB corps, I think they will have an excellent chance of not only getting to, but winning a SB within the next few years.
How long did Idzim How long did Idzik get? He had one bad year and was gone. Woody listens to the fan base (for better or worse). If this team tanks you will hear some rumblings. There is no guaranty he returns.
I can't believe all the criticism Bowles is getting. I'm perfectly fine with him as coach. We need a QB, we need an O-Line. These things don't just come to your team overnight. Gotta give the new regime a chance to find some players first.
Is this QB coming out of the sky? I'm not crazy, I'm just not playing hypotheticals. Having a great QB would be super, but there are larger issues on this team at this time than the QB.
Offense Minded Head Coaches for the NY Jets in the last 40 years. Joe Walton Bruce Coslet Rich Kotite /thread
so you get an "offensive coach" then what? scrap all the money we have locked up in defensive players.. totally rebuild to a offensive loaded team? maybe hire chip kelly??? we have a good defense, its our strength, you play to your strength. mac is touted as having an eye for talent so im expecting to draft well, d.smith is disappointing (but so far but not in a stephen hill/saunders kind of way... I still think he can turn it around) but other then that this first draft is one of the best in years. Look at carolina, and seattle they dont have a loaded offense but were able to have success. I think with a good QB you can win a lot of games we just need to get some prospects and grow them in with this defense and this new MGMT/coaching staff, Ive watched all I can find on petty in college and I think he can be great. If not so far Mac has been one of the better drafting GMs we have had so I have faith.
