Honestly the lack of effort in addressing the OL should be a fireable offense for Macc. What was he thinking?

I watched the Cowboys/Giants game and I heard his name once, and it was during a fight.

    You're making shit up.

    Because you're stupid.

They drafted Hackenberg in the second round because they thought he was going to be good. You think Macc is now not interested in even seeing him play? If so, Macc should be out the door today.

I'm fine with Petty being the answer too. I guess I should have said either Petty or Hackenberg needs to show long term starter potential by the end of next year for Macc or Bowles to hang around the 4th year.

And this is why you keep Bowles. What if Petty and Hackenberg both stink next year? Would you still want Macc as the GM? Probably not, so then you fire the GM and need to bring in a GM that liked the coach they hired, or you fire the new coach after 1 year.

I also want to keep Bowles to keep continuity with the coaching staff and the young QBs. Because if Bowles goes, so does the whole offensive staff, and I know no fans like their offensive coordinator on any team, but Gailey is not the problem.

I am sure U are such a knowledgeable NYJ fan that U R aware that the NYJs have been in a rebuilding mode since 01/13/69 & have had zero success during that period of time in building a SB winning team

The "competitive rebuild" concept is a big reason as to why this team hasn't won in 50 years. It's been shown in the NFL that you have to go all in on a rebuild if you are going to be successful. It means a 1-15, 3-13, and 5-11 season. You have to see steady improvement and as the young players come into their own you then use free agency to upgrade and solidify. That's how New England did it. The Jets are constantly trying to win and rebuild at the same time and the result is the mess we have now

Of course, Mac is interested in seeing Hack play. I'm glad you clarified regarding Petty.

Hack and Petty are not reason for keeping Bowles. If they both stink next year, they both stink. Yes, I would still want Mac as GM. How many 4th round QBs make it as starters in the NFL? Similarly, Hack was a project and a big IF. I believe that Mac had to take Hack in the 2nd or risk losing him to other teams. He thought that the Jets would be drafting in the teens or twenties for the foreseeable future, and thought that would be the only chance they had to try to find a young QB without having to give up the farm to move up. He knew the damage that had already been done to the roster by Tanny with all his trade ups and Idzik with all his blown/missed picks. So I think he wants to see both develop, but knows that if they don't it's not a disaster as it would be if he had taken a 1st round QB who failed. The expectations can't or shouldn't be the same for a 4th round QB, or even a 2nd round QB as they are for a 1st.

You don't fire the GM and then bring in a new one that likes the present HC. That's just stupid! Did you learn nothing from the Rex and Idzik situation? You also don't fire Mac without giving him a chance to hire his own HC. IMO unless the GM immediately proves himself in over his head and untrustworthy (as Idzik did), you have to give him at a minimum 4-5 years. Since it takes 2-3 years to really judge a draft class, that would allow time to fully and accurately evaluate the GM's vision and the job he is doing in building the team. That's where your stability comes from, not from the HC.

I like Gailey better than most, but he has done an awful job this season. The only way he should stay is if we're stuck with Bowles, and even then he should be told to pull his head out of his ass, to start using the TE position, to use Powell and Forte (or the new RB they draft) at the same time on some plays, to do a better job of play calling in the red zone, that the offensive players better start executing better, and to do a better job with game plans and adjustment to said plans. He should also be told that if we don't see significant improvement out of both Petty and Hack next season that will be his last, and he may not even make it through the entire season.

I understand the rationale for wanting to keep the offensive system the same or at least very similar so that it doesn't set back Petty's and Hack's development, and there is definitely some validity in that. That's where your GM comes in. He has to be smart enough to not hire a HC who is married to his own systems. He has to hire one who is flexible and willing to work with the systems that are already in place. That is what has killed the Jets over the years moreso than HC changes. They've constantly changed offensive and defensive, systems and then had to turn over the roster to get the right players for those new systems. If they fired Gailey, they could keep Patullo, or they hire an OC who uses a system very similar to Gailey's, or one that was easy to pick up and QB friendly, and not some complicated system that would require a different type of OL or WRs. The bottom line is that we need a HC and coordinators who can adapt their systems or the systems in place to the talent on hand and find a way to hide the shortcomings and holes, to take advantage of our strengths, and to put the players in a position to succeed.

We can agree to disagree on most points I guess :)

I do want to clarifyi I never suggested firing just Macc. My position is Macc and Bowles should be given 1 more year. If the arrow is pointing up for the team at the end of next year, they stay. If it's pointing down, they go. And a lot of that, almost all of it, will have to do with the QB play.

We can agree to disagree, but I don't see how you can possibly begin to justify, firing the GM and keeping the HC and saddling the new GM with the old HC. That makes zero sense and we've just seen what a disaster that can be. Many, if not most, of the better GM candidates would never accept such a load of crap. That's a dysfunctional way of doing things and the kind of thing that Woody has been doing that has kept the team sucking.

You said it, but it was wrong. You clearly did say firing Mac and then hiring a new GM who would like the HC

I was illustrating why I think it's a bad idea to fire just Bowles.

My point was if they fire just Bowles after this year and bring in a new coach to go with Macc, and then Hack/Petty both show nothing next year, you have a very messy situation. Do you keep Mac, who shows he can't draft a QB? Or fire Mac and then keep the coach who you JUST hired and force a marriage with a new GM? Or fire both Mac and the new coach after just 1 year?

I was pointing out why I think Bowles/Macc should both be given another year, because none of those situations I just outlined are desirable.

A lot of jobs were saved with that comeback win yesterday. Early on it sure looked like the team had quit on this coaching staff. That was a disgraceful showing against a 1 win team until the team came back to life.

Now they get Miami with their backup QB this week and a Bills team with Rex possibly coaching his last game there in week 17 they have a good chance to win three of their last four games now. Bowles stared into the abyss yesterday and survived!!!

    GOOD win!!

IMO you don't make your point, and don't really have one. Missing on a 4th or 2nd round QB prospect is not the same as missing on a 1st round QB prospect, and doesn't "show that he can't draft a QB." Mac can't help it if in the two years he has been the GM that there wasn't a couple of great QB prospects. That can't be held against him, and it can't be held against him that the CS has not committed to developing Petty and Hack and given them opportunities. Woody wanted a winning team and wanted Fitz. Mac was the one who didn't want Fitz back. Mac has no control over what Woody wants.

My point was that you had no point and that Mac should not be fired for at least 2 more years, if not longer.

Keeping Bowles just extends the inevitable firing next year.

He's not very good.and the talent he has to work with won't be any better either.

2 bad years in a row won't sit well with Woody or the fans.

They have serious weapons on O possibly the best & deepest WR group in football when Decker comes back next season. One of the most explosive, versatile RBs in the game in Powell. They have a d-line.

    They need a QB.

I want Tyrod Taylor. We'll see who they like one thing is for sure they can't miss on whoever they bring in.
