Idzik wiffed so many times! I remember thinking, 'wow, 12 whole draft picks. We just have to get lucky!" No such luck.
The measure of an acceptable draft is how many quality starters your team acquires. For the current 7 round system, the number is 1.842 or something like that. So, lets call it 2. If a team consistently gets 2 quality starters (not necessarily all pro, but good players) from each draft, they are in great shape. And if one of them is a QB, even better. We have had recent empty drafts with no starters, and some even with no players on the roster after 2-3 years. That has to change.
I think many picks had Rex's prints on them, but he's good at avoiding those kinds of questions for some reason. Glad he's gone, sad we can't find a real coach/GM combo, and I hope Woody Johnson gets his dick bitten by whatever underage escort he pays to blow him this weekend.
Lee and Pryor are one in the same. Bad picks. Of course Lee still has a chance to develop as he's young. Still a bad pick by a bad GM.
Maccagnan has been a little bit better, but I really don't see his drafts being that much better. They've drafted the same amount of starters. Nearly all of both free agent acquisitions and players traded for will be gone by next season other than Carpenter and Skrine. They've both been terrible in their own ways. Maccagnan will get year 3 and it's really make or break for him. After all the cuts he'll once again have plenty of cap space to work with. If he signs anymore 30+ year old players to multi-year deals, then I'd imagine he's as good as gone in another year or two. He didn't learn his lesson last offseason by trading for often injured Ryan Clady and signing Matt Forte to a three year deal, while also signing Powell to the same contract which basically leaves us handcuffed at the runningback position through 2017.
Burris, Shell, and Peake are starting to get more playing time. Let's not beat up the rookies too much until they have had more time to develop.
Mac's drafts are way better even now. Williams seems like a high-character guy and will be a perennial pro-bowler. Petty will at least be a decent back-up, deon simon will at least be a rotational depth guy, same with mauldin. Jenkins and Lee are starters, Shell looked good in his first start, peake can contribute. Edwards is Meh but may improve. Smith is in bust territory, hack is question mark. If smith contributes next year and hack develops, Mac is a superstar compared to Idzik. Idzik's good players are quincy and maybe winters. Sheldon is a dumbass, pryor sucks. Geno will be back-up at best somewhere else. The rest of draft picks are either already out of the nfl or on their way out. horrible.
While he seems like a Rex type of player, why would a competent GM stake his reputation by listening to a coach he was saddled with & wanted to replace?
A football player, - out of the NFL completely after being drafted 2, 3 or 4 years previously -------- was a bad draft pick. Particularly if that draft pick was a 3rd or 4th rounder. And ESPECIALLY if they were off the Jets and/or out of the NFL 2yrs after being drafted.
Average NFL career used to be 4.8 years (as of 2011). It is down to 3.3 years (2016). Based on those numbers and your definition of a bad pick, I can only assume you think the NFL draft is a waste of time?
Neither Idzik or Mac have had good drafts. That being said Mac has had better drafts. The Idzik 12 more than half aren't even in the league anymore and didn't even last two years. Mac's two drafts at least have players that appear to be players that will stick for a little. If you look at teams that have great drafts they still miss on a player or two. Most drafts you are lucky if 50% of the class is good. Hopefully Mac learns from his mistakes and we hit more on our picks this year.
Uye. Yeah, --- I think the NFL draft is a waste of time. Must be easy going through life painting everything with such a broad brush. I guess you figured that no other NFL players besides drafted players goes into the statistics you just quoted above regarding average NFL lifespan. I can only assume you think undrafted players never make it in the NFL. Or guys that basically stop playing. Or guys barely good enough to make it 1 season in 3 games and then are just not good enough to continue a career. I’ll refrain further from speaking in literal terms. My definition of a horrible draft is the first 7 picks of John Idzik’s famous 2014 draft (with the exception of Calvin Pryor @ 18 and even now, I’m not in love with that one either). This draft was 2 years ago. To be consistent with your literal requirements, - 2 years, and almost 8 months ago. Jace Amaro (2nd round 49 overall) was RELEASED by the JETS after 2 seasons (1 of which was spent on IR). He is consistently on the Titans game inactive list each week. Dexter McDougle (3rd 80) was resoundingly laughed at for being 1 of the draft’s biggest reaches. He barely plays special teams for a 4-10 team. Jalen Saunders (4th 104) was RELEASED by the Jets after Week 3 of his ROOKIE season. He couldn’t get past practice squads on 5 other teams and is OUT OF FOOTBALL. Shaq Evans (4th 115) was RELEASED by the Jets 16 months after he was drafted. Made it through his rookie season on IR. 2 other teams practice squads, -- he is OUT OF FOOTBALL. Dakota Dozier (4th 137) has barely seen the field since being drafted. Jeremiah George (5th 154) was RELEASED by the Jets before Week 1 of his ROOKIE season and sent to the practice squad where he was signed by Jacksonville to their active roster for barely a year and then released. He bounced from Tampa Bay’s practice squad to currently Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad. He is barely in the NFL. Amazingly, John Idzik was able to reverse engineer the purpose of draft order as his later picks Quincy Enunwa, IK Enemkpali & Trevor Reilly actually made active rosters & saw the field in some capacity of playing time. Compare this to the NY Giants 2014 draft. Or some other teams headed to the playoffs. It’s a stark difference.
I think my point was that you were painting with too broad a brush, guy. But go ahead and call it like you see it.
It is certainly a bleak picture you paint, but at least we have Enunwa to bring some hope but as for the rest just wow at the bad bad choices.
12 Picks in a pretty stacked draft..... and just a few guys worth noting. This post just about crushes this thread.
Idzik picking Dexter McDougle, the 256th rated player in the whole draft, (a probable undrafted free agent) with a high third round pick should answer this question. Idzik relied on Terry Dumbway's assessment of McDougle as "the smartest cornerback in the draft" to justify the reach. I always considered athletic abiltiy, speed, toughness, turning the hips, etc. to be important in a CB, but Idzik and Boobway rely on who is the smartest. Dex sure proved them right--his third year and he still can't get on the field.
Great post. And a high third round pick on a guy who played the first 3 games of his final college season before getting hurt & missing the rest. It truly is amazing how Terry Bradway was able to ascent the organizational management structure of an NFL team. Let us never cease the opportunity to bash Bradway or Idzik. I feel the damage they did will not only last into next season but 2018 as well.
