Stop them... really? I understand your premise but come on man this defense has played terrible the entire season and has - let me see if I can recall a critical stop in any game, I can not - not played even competitive FB for most of the season.
I'm not sure I can agree with this. It was Bowles who said he wanted Fitz back. Maccagnan just made it happen and maybe to his credit he didn't beak the bank to do it either. As for Bowles, my issue with him revolves around the way the team conducted themselves on the field. Aside from the poor execution we witnessed all year, when you have guys constantly getting unsportsmanlike, taunting, inopportune offside and motion penalties, that's a sign of poor coaching. There's no other way to put it. In yesterday's game you have a guy like Enunwa making a first down gesture after catching a pass trailing in the game 31-0. That's just a lack of class and reflects on Bowles coaching style. Having said that, I do think Bowles will be given another year unfortunately.
In most of those cases the teams were bad for awhile when the new regime took over. Exceptions: Teams that were good when the new regime took over. Teams that weren't good when the new regime took over but caught lightening in a bottle for a year or two and thought they were good. You never get good by continually changing horses.....you may catch lightening in a bottle every now and then but you'll never build a team the right way from the bottom up that way.
The Jets have averaged a new head coach every 3.4 years or so...when you take out weeb I think that average drops down to around 2 if I recall correctly. Keep changing horses and the Jets will continue to be what they've been for the past 40 years.
And for those wanting to keep Bowles while getting rid of the front office. ha ha ha....if the front office goes so does Bowles.
So here's what I saw this year Bad quarterback play Bad drops by receivers Bad line play Key injuries (including guys playing hurt all season, like Marshall) An offense that always came out flat A defense that overpursues, is easily faked and leaves its feet too early on tackles, if they choose to give an effort. No turnovers No QB Pressure Very weak special teams play Some of this is on Macaggnan, but most of it is on Bowles and the coaching staff I really don't think the press has been that hard on Bowles...I think the coaching staff on the whole is weak and should be getting much more heat. the fans have been much harder on them on than the press
What do you suggest then? Keep what we have so the crap can continue, and we can keep watching them while nothing gets better? If a position isn't working out, you have to move on from it. We have had lots of shitty coaches and GM's the last 40 years, but keeping shitty ones around won't help. If we have something worth keeping, I'm all for keeping them. I'm totally against continuity for continuity sake. Our owner hires the product, all. We can do as fans is watch. We have zero input.
Well said. Continuity for continuity's sake isn't the way to go. The Browns have been going through coaches left and right and were still able to land the consensus best available candidate last year in Hugh Jackson. The Jets just have to get serious about trying to win, by putting into place a front office structure that is built for long term success (which includes having the coach answer directly to the GM rather than both to the owner), and coaches will be attracted to the job. There's only 32 of these jobs on the planet and plenty of coaches out there who have aspirations of ascending to one of them.
Anyone that thinks bringing Bowles back is a good idea needs to answer the following question: What the fuck happened to Calvin Pryor? Last year he was the anchor gor our defense. Not only did he play great but when he missed time due to injury our defense fell apart. This year the guy can't catch a cold, much less cover ANYONE. I think Rex coached him up and after two years of Bowles he got soft and lost focus. Please tell me another narrative that explains how the play of Pryor and other defenders fell off a cliff yet justifies bringing back the defensive mastermind that is Todd Bowles.
Answer: Bowles is not Rex and the core of the defense sans Williams are Rex's players. They simply didn't respond to Bowles and probably never will.
It's funny you mentioned Cleveland, which in 95 had an awesome staff in place but the owner screwed up by moving the team. That's our teams luck. You saying 32 positions that are highly coveted, should ring a bell to fans. Bowles is doing the best he can I'm sure, but he obviously wasn't interviewed enough. A college coach would have been better than him. Coaching in the NFL is hard when you surround yourself with coordinators and position coaches that are totally inept. None of ours are ready for the NFL. Bowles and his staff would struggle to go .500 at the high school level from what I've seen. Mac should be given the chance to replace Bowles and his staff, or let him go too and find a GM who can majorly assist in the next staffs hiring.
