Follow Adam Schefter ✔@AdamSchefter Former Chargers' G Orlando Franklin visited the Jets today, per source. 1:49 PM - 25 Jul 2017 Franklin was released by the Chargers in May after two years with the team. He signed a 5 year, $36 million contract with San Diego as a free agent in 2015. The Jets made an effort to sign him back then. Franklin chose to sign with the Chargers, and the Jets signed James Carpenter instead to take a starting guard spot. As it turns out, the Jets were probably better off ending up with Carpenter. Franklin was a second round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2011, spending the first four years of his career with that team. The Jets seem set at guard with Carpenter and Brian Winters so it seems like Franklin would be signed purely for depth. He also started his career at tackle so perhaps he could add some depth at that spot as well. *** Would anyone like to see the Jets sign Franklin? He's 29, but started all 16 games last year. Can someone tell me what his ranking was this past year? He was good with Denver, and I had hoped the Jets would sign him 2 years ago. They tried, but he signed with San Diego instead. I don't know if SD released/didn't re-sign him because of age and a drop off in play or if they needed the cap space and he made too much. He would be great insurance in case of injury to Carpenter or Winters, as he has to be better than any of the Jets backups, and might even be better than Winters or Carpenter. The fact that he has played Tackle before doesn't hurt, either. He might be a better RT than Qvale, Ijalana or Shell.
He had been terrible the past 2 years, was the 7th worst O lineman last year and was worse in 15. Could be worth a veteran minimum for depth but I was surprised to see the Jets bring him in.
Seems like a growth stunting move, especially when you consider how committed they seem to be with next-man-up this season. If he's depth that's fine, anything would be counterintuitive.
OK, thanks. That's what I feared for the Chargers not to have kept him. If that's the case, then we probably don't need him, unless he didn't fit in the Chargers blocking scheme or struggled due to injury. He only appeared in 10 games in 2015. Do you know if he had some kind of injury he struggled with and it took him a while to recover that might have affected his play?
From what I understand, he has a handful of nagging injuries that continue to hamper his play. I know he had some minor injuries in Denver and an issue with his leg but not sure what the exact nature of the injuries are. Here's an interesting chart seems mostly ankle and knee issues. Why not bring him in? you're allowed 90 guys in camp and I bet he is better than player number 90 and plays a position you can't have enough depth at. Sign this beast For vet min, no guarantees
It will be strictly for depth. I don't see him fit at RT. As a general rule of thumb, when it comes to OLs, you always move the guys from [OUTSIDE -> IN]. Not [inside -> out.] Undersized OL with sufficient agility and quick feet has a lot of useful years left, but oversized OLs that can't move fast enough can't handle OT responsibility. Last time I checked, he's checking in at 330 LB. Maybe okay for a blocking RT, but his pass protection will be brutal.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...orlando-franklin-five-days-after-signing-him/ The Saints have already dropped him. According to the article, they may have signed him with the intent of starting him at OG and kicking Andrus Peat out to tackle with Terron Armstead out for a while. Either they didn't think he would be any better starting at OG than either of the two rookies they drafted or he's just done.
Could be legit competition for Dakota Doozier who needs to show some progress to make the team again IMO.Also added insurance as a veteran body should Beachem not stay healthy..albeit he himself is injury prone..so There's that.
I don't think he could play LT. If Beachum can't stay healthy, I think the LT job is Ijalana's. I do think he would be good competition for Dozier, Watt, and the other Jets backup OG prospects. Then again, he's 28-29, has an injury history, and with the Jets rebuilding, I'm not sure he's worth the time/trouble.
No he's not an option blind side.Im still going on the premise that Beachem will play RT like Bowles said earlier in off-season I also still believe shell is better suited for Left tackle as he has very good bend & feet but lacks some anchoring/Leverage you'd wanna see on the right side...no denying how he ended last season playing there however
I disagree. I never heard Bowles say anything about Beachum on the right side, and can't imagine his playing there. I think he's been an LT his whole career, but could be mistaken. Similarly, I can't see Shell on the Left side. I don't think he has the feet or lateral quickness to protect a QB's blind side.
https://www.google.com/amp/www.jetsfix.com/scouting-kelvin-beachum/amp/ This article references the Bowles quote in question. He indicated soon after he signed that he'd be competing w shell at RT. My opinion on shell is that his top assets are his feet, lateral quickness, & bend.Where he gets in trouble in pass pro is w his drop aiming points,Inconsistent temperment firing out w his hands, pad level & needed strength. He seemed to handle those things better at RT.Was that due to the position change or additional practice time to clean up technique?
Thanks for the link. IMO that shows what a dumbass Bowles is that he would think of Beachum competing at RT, and Ijalana playing LT. I think you probably know more about OL play than I do, so I will yield to you, but I still disagree. I've seen nothing in Shell's play and read nothing in analysis of his play and strengths/weaknesses that would even remotely suggest that he was a left tackle. I think you're wrong about his feet and lateral quickness. It was early in his rookie season when he played LT in preseason, but he couldn't even handle truck drivers and delivery men at LT. He was awful. Following is his nfl.com draft profile that helped influence my opinion of him: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/brandon-shell?id=25
