Free agent offensive tackle Derek Newton worked out for the New York Jets on Tuesday according to Mike Jones of USA Today. Newton is a player everyone should be pulling for as he tries to become the first NFL player to return to action after tearing both patella tendons on the same play. One source said Newton "looked good" at his tryout on Tuesday, but the two parties haven't signed a deal. If the 30-year-old Newton is able to come back -- he might have a better shot at a return playing guard if he's less mobile -- in any capacity, it will be one of the biggest comeback stories of the season. Originally a seventh-round draft pick out of Arkansas State by the Houston Texans in 2011, Newton anchored the Texans offensive line at right tackle for five years before suffering the injury in 2016. He spent the entire 2017 season on PUP but hoped for a return. The Texans thought differently, releasing him in April, and his workout for the Jets is the first known interest in his services.
Holy shit man. That's tough as hell. I tore my Patella Tendon10 years ago and still have lot of after effects from it. This guy did both... Great qoute from an interview with O'brien "Nobody's worked harder than Derek Newton to try to get back to where he's at," O'Brien said. "He's a hardworking guy. ... That guy's been in there every single day at 6 a.m., five days a week. He probably comes in on the weekends on his own. I would say he's probably not able to do a bunch of field work -- he can rehab-wise, but not in team periods and things like that."
