Vinny has big play ability to counter his interception ratio. Penny throws 10-20 yard routes(if he feels risky) and still has a problem.
Chad has his time and he gave us all he had. The bottom line is that time has come to an end. Period.
I'm glad we have such intelligent fans who can come up with the completely original idea of benching the QB after a loss.
I am not saying Vinnie was not a decent QB. I think Parcells did a good job of using him to suit his strengths. I am just saying there was a throng of folks here ready to crucify him every week. It is the same mentality.
Seafood, it's not benching him after a loss, it's looking at his play overall and seeing how sub-par it really is over the course of this season, his poor decision making ability which was always his trump card, seeing that he can't elevate his game to the next level when it counts, against stout opposing D's or teams with great talent, and seeing that he siimply is not the future for this team, and when/if we are out of the playoff picture, his ass should be on the bench, giving Clemens some meaningful playing time before the end of this season.
A "what if" on Pennington. What if the coaching staff internally has leaned toward or expects to be rid of Chad in the offseason? I am not certain of his tradeability, or if he is in his last year of his contract, but if you are the FO/CS and thinking of getting rid of him, wouldn't you be better off keeping him in the lineup and trying to win behind him? If Penny has a decent finish to the season, that would seem to boost his value more so than benching him at this point and going with the rookie.
Does anyone on this board play PRO ball? Not, "I did in HS or Coll." Because I did that. Anyone write for a periodical pertaining to football or have their own TV or radio show about PRO ball? Anyone. Enough with the frickin' "if you think that than you have no idea about what the game of football is all about". Seems to be a lot of people here who look up stats or watch Sports Center and come on here and tell everyone whos opinion differs from theirs that they are asses and should stop talking about things they don't know about. Bottom line, and I got this from watching the game, we stink. And don't tell me that if I feel that way I should switch teams. We need a whole lot of help. QB(enough with Chad). A Full-time RB. Help on the D-line...Blah, Blah. We had it right there and we lost just as much as the Bills won. 26 years of watching this. Obviously something needs fixing.
If he were bad all year and we were sitting here at 5-8, I'd agree with you. But the fact is he's played a lot of good games and he's a big, if not the biggest, reason we're in the hunt at 7-6, so I don't agree. I'm not putting him in the Pro Bowl, but as a Jet fan he's our best shot right now. The backup QB is always the most popular guy in town, the next Hall-of-Famer. But we know once the guy gets on the field that's not the case. I'm not in the mood to go through this guy's learning curve when we still have a shot in December. There was an open competition for the job in camp, Pennington won it going away. Mangini is a smart coach, I trust his judgement on this.
Don't get me wrong- I'm willing to have him play until we are out of playoff contention- after that, all bets are off the table and his ass is on the bench...
Well, then we agree. There's only three games left, so I don't see it happening. If anything, Clemens will be in a better position to challenge for the job and be successful on the field next year. It's the same difference as asking a freshman and a sophomore to get the same job done. One knows his way around the landscape and the other is just feeling his way. To play QB in New York you don't want to be the freshman feeling your way around.
It does seem as Chad goes so do the jets, but dont forget the defensive strides that we made this year, that seemed to disappear this past game against the Bills. You take for granted all the intelligence and reads that chad makes as well as his cadence, shifts, general orchestration. As much as I would like to see the consistency that is preached week in and week out, you put in clemmons worse yet Ramsey... You WILL get the 2 and 14 season that was predicted.... Be grateful for what we are....... not what we arent
I agree. Regarding consistency, the whole league is like that. Everyone has bad games, there are no exceptions anymore. Even the mighty Colts and Patriots throw out a bad game, just not as often. Considering this was supposed to be a transitional year and Tannenbaum/Mangini started from scratch, I can't believe people are still complaining.
I usually don't look at stats, but since thats what you guys do. If you look at yards per attempt, Chad is better than Favre and Brady and 0.5 below Peyton. You can't tell me Chad can't throw a deep fade to stretch the field. He has thrown several this year. Can he throw 50 yards off his back foot, no but not many can.
Look, despite his limitations, right now Chad is far and away the best quarterback on the roster. That means he should start and play as long as the game is winnable. The worst thing we can see is the staff pulling a Browning Nagle, and deciding that Kenny O took the team as far as he was ever going to and it was time to make a change for the sake of change. That set the team back ten years.

I can't think of another team sport where so much responsibility for winning/losing rests with one player. How do these guys sleep at night?
