How about competence. have we seen it the past two weeks? The O team seems to have regressed and its been a jail break at the LOS. I been extremely crtical of AG because I do not see improvement nor do I see someone who may have the answers. However, what is really disconcerting is that we have players on the OL who just last year played ok... not great but ok. Are you going to tell me that all of them, all at once, became incompetent? I understand that the OL needs to gel, to build chemistry, etc. but its three weeks that they have NOT improved and to not get 1 as in ONE 1st down is an indictment of the O coaching staff not just AG. To me it seems the scheme doesn't seem to fit the players.... If the backups can function better make the change, geezus it can not get worse, or maybe it can.
great post. this is just embarrassing. I have to believe this is an issue at QB or C though. it's not a play call thing. we have the personal to block. the C needs to call out protections. like 3 people blocking 1 when 1 goes unaccounted for is nonsense. there should have been slide protection with the C and LG blocking the guy up the middle. the RG blocks 98 and the RT blocks 54. It's been like this all season. between darnold's mono and siemian and falk and kalil it seems nobody is calling out protections. kalil has been an awful waste of 8 million. we didn't have these issues last year with sam/mccown at QB and harrison at C. I get a good play call with a blitzer coming in untouched but a d-lineman? that's inexcusable. when have any of our players had a free run at the QB? it shouldn't happen
WTH didn’t Idzik or Macagnan fix this??? It’s stupidly obvious of how important the offensive line is to a team and these two morons let it all go even when it was obvious DBrick and Mangold were on the decline. I sometimes just don’t understand how these people can call themselves professionals and at the same time be so dumb. We made it to two conference games on the backs of a good offensive line. It was obvious for at least 5 years that this is priority number one along side a edge rush. In a baffling fashion we decide to continue to ignore it. We then spend a ton in areas like safety, inside linebacker, and interior pass rush. Areas that frankly don’t move the needle when talking about wins. Hopefully this is the last season we endure where major needs are ignored.
If an OL is not in sync & cannot properly identify whats in front of them they simply arent gonna execute. The phone booth is not the place for uncertainty or poor judgment. These guys arent trusting whats in front of them or beside them. Its time to figure out what the F is going on pre snap. Not just the call itself but communication/adjustments by each of the starting 5. Everyone needs to be 100% comfortable..reacting & not thinking. Then & only then can we point to a lack of talent which i suspect is also a major factor.
What is most damning of Gase is that we supposedly improves the OL from last year. So what happened? It seems much too early for this, but it almost seems like the players have quit on him already.
I used to be a BPA fan. Not anymore. Mac didn't even seem to be really getting the "best player available" picks right anyway. Team building is not necessarily about bringing in a group of the most talented players possible. Its about building a group that allow each player to maximize their talents. Look at how poor our offensive line is for example. Bell and Crowder's talents are minimized because the QB gets pressured every play. We also have to get out of this 1950's football mentality. I really like players like Mosley and Quinnen, but they are playing positions that really don't move the needle. It doesn't happen by accident that these "best player in the draft" defensive linemen fall to us year after year. Like suckers, we've fallen for it every time. I really hope Douglas focuses on the positions of need in free agency and gets the best player in the draft that moves the needle for our team's situation, not necessarily BPA. Its kinda silly how the fans can call out these needs far better than GMs with years of experience up to this point.
Clearly the problem is Kalil & the fact that the OL never really played together...it’s preseason for them...it was painful watching Darnold have no chance against Buffalo in the 4th quarter....even before the snap Buffalo were already focused on the interior of the line & were 100% confident we couldn’t do anything about it...
It's a combination. Leaving Garrett unblocked multiple times and Vernon unblocked a couple as well was scheme. The line was sliding away from the edge leaving them free by design. Gase said as much in his post game presser. "The ball has to come out faster, I believe was his reply to leaving them unblocked. You don't leave an elite pass rusher unblocked on a pass play. That's just a terrible play design. 3 O lineman blocking 1 D lineman is execution. The lack of time together, injuries etc have definitely played a part also. Hopefully they can get it sorted with two weeks before the next game. I'm beginning to think they should hold Darnold out a little longer if he's cleared to play. See what the line looks like after the bye week vs the Eagles.
The lack of awareness or mobility by Falk or Siemian is also part of the problem. Neither guy is/was able to move well in the pocket and get outside the tackles to make a play - Something Sam is very, very good at. Him being in there (with addition to maybe Harrison/Edoga playing) will definitely help mitigate some of the OL issues IMO.
If so, is that not down to play calling then? In this case calling a play that was designed with the strengths of QB A in mind, despite QBs B and C, who don't possess the same mobility, now being under center.
Yeah for sure. I think it is a combination of all three things just being a dumpster fire at the moment. Playcalling. Communication of the OL. QB play.
only time you turn a DE loose unblocked is to get him to overrun a play like a screen pass where the RB slips behind him. I can't imagine a playcall that turns a DE loose where the routes all take 3+ seconds to develop. doesn't make any sense to exist. I think the ball coming out faster comment has nothing to do with the play by design leaving a DE unaccounted for. it's 2 different things. Liek maybe his comment about we need to execute a few things betetr is in regards to the o-line calling protections better.
I'd have to see the presser but you have to remember they were unblocked on multiple plays. Not just 1 play. gase could be thinking of a screen he called and not what you are assuming where it wasn't a screen. I wouldn't read much into it. Seriously no way gase even makes it to be an OC let alone a HC if he calls plays that leaves pass blockers unblocked and routes that take 3-5 seconds to develop.
You're right. I've been saying this for years in the face of those who worship at the Alter of the Holy BPA (apparently your former faith). A team is not simply a collection of physical talent. Good/great teams blend talent and compatibility and sport-specific intelligence, fitting players who have the right characteristics into the positions of need they have at the time. Doing this over s few seasons will result in a cohesive team comprised not necessarily of All Pros at every position, but a team that maximizes the talent that's on it. The Patriots are a perfect example of this, but really all the teams that have had repeated success over the years possess this trait. They draft and sign "their guys" and plug them into their system. Occasionally - especially with QBs - a player comes available who possesses rare talent but who might not fit easily into their mold, but if a team needs that player, they'll figure out how to change their system to maximize that player's ability. Often however, the best teams pass on these exceptional players and take a lesser - but still outstanding - player who better fits their system. The thing that has driven me crazy with the Jets is that they have no clue what a "Jets Player" looks like! And this pre-dates Macc. We had a brief period under Parcells where there was a blueprint for a "Jets Guy", although I personally didn't like his model, at least it provided something to build upon. We have to go all the way back to Weeb Ewbank and Sonny Werblin to see what their vision of what the Jets were trying to be: a blend of high flying offense, and smart, nimble defense. Somehow after they and Namath left we lost the blueprint. I really hope that Douglas can rediscover it.
Ball’s gotta come out faster. Whether you leave Garrett or whoever unblocked is a matter of opinion but if the QB/entire O knows where the free man is coming from than everyone needs to know where the ball is going.WR has to separate, get to the spot & QB has to throw to that spot fast.
only time you leave a DE unblocked is to make him over-run the play and slip a TE or HB out behind him. If the D sees it and jumps it, the QB has to throw it at the HB/TEs feet and live to fight another down. You don't expect WRs to get separation on a route in time for an unblocked DE to not get a sack
In the olden days, the way you stopped someone like Myles was to run at him. This would cause him to slow down just a bit to see what's going on and react
